Diopside has been developed for use in dental root implants and for the filling of bone defects. In previous studies, diopside developed hydroxyapatite (HA) on its surface and achieved a direct bond with bone. The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism of crystal formation on the diopside surface.

Forty-two patients with head and neck cancer were submitted to microvascular reconstructive procedures. We divided patients in three groups; a first group of 30 patients, in whom the oral floor (8 patients), the part of tongue (14 patients), the lower gingiva (6 patients) and the oropharynx (2 patients) were reconstructed using various sizes of forearm flaps; a second group of 7 patients who underwent buccal mucosa reconstructions with the forearm flaps; and a third group of 5 patients who received rectus abdominis flaps for total tongue reconstruction. Three illustrative cases, one from each group, are presented in detail.

The objective of the present study was to investigate the role of the Schwann cell basal lamina in nerve regeneration. To achieve this goal, we observed the process of axonal regeneration within a lyophilized nerve graft, in which only the basal lamina of the Schwann cell persisted. Sciatic nerves were removed from rats and lyophilized to kill the Schwann cells and other components.

Bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) was extracted from bovine bone matrix and purified. The 6M guanidine-HCL soluble fraction and the final purified substance were bioassayed by implantation of about 3 mg into the thigh muscles of C3H strain mice. These specimens induced new bone in three weeks when implanted into muscle pouches of the C3H mouse.

The aim of this study was to examine about the etiology of large cyst formation in pleomorphic adenoma from the histopathological standpoint by examining four cases of our own as well as previously reported ones. In the first of our cases, a large cyst wall lined with keratinized squamous epithelium was observed. In the second, a large cyst containing mucinous material was lined with a single cell layer of squamous epithelium-like cells.

The mandibular alveolar ridge extension method is a surgical technique to extend the alveolar ridge up to the required level. Using a surgical splint prepared to meet the clinical requirements establishes the desirable alveolar ridge extension with porous hydroxyapatite (HAP) particles. Before the operation, a working cast of the extremely resorpted mandibular alveolar ridge is remodeled into its desired shape with paraffin wax, and the extended surgical splint is cured by clear acrylic resin.

The study on labial movement of maxillary unilateral incisor had been reported previously. This study was the case of maxillary bilateral incisors. Orthodontic forces during labial movement of maxillary bilateral incisors which were produced by stainless steel archwire with vertical loops and nickel titanium archwire, were measured and were examined the distribution of orthodontic forces to the dental arch in the experimental apparatus with strain gauges.

Basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland was studied with immunohistochemical methods. We observed cells in the tumor with positive reaction to polyclonal keratin, prekeratin, monoclonal PKK-1, polyclonal S-100 protein, monoclonal S-100 protein (alpha), secretory component, actin and laminin. However, no cells which stained positively with monoclonal KL-1, amylase, carcinoembryonic antigen, or epithelial membrane antigen were recognized.

Basal cell adenoma of the parotid gland was studied with electron microscopy. The cells constituting this tumor were divided into three types of epithelial cells; ductal, myoepithelial, and squamous cells. The ductal cells, which were polygonal and cuboidal in shape, formed a sometimes distinct lumen.

In order to objectively evaluate the usefulness of clarithromycin (TE-031, A-56268), a new oral macrolide antibiotic, in the treatment of acute dental infections, a double-blind comparative clinical trail was conducted using josamycin (JM) as the control drug. TE-031 was administered at a daily dosage of 400 mg in 2 divided doses, and JM was given at a daily dosage of 1,200 mg in 3 divided doses. The administration period was, as a rule, 7 days.

Tail-vein injections of streptozotocin (STZ) in various doses (20-60 mg/kg body weight) were used to induce diabetes mellitus in male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain. Resulting pathosis was observed on the basis of various parameters (body weight, blood glucose, plasma insulin, glucose-tolerance tests, uroscopy, hemodiagnosis, and skin strength) Results 1. Diabetes mellitus was induced in all rats of the group in which the dosage was STZ 40 mg/kg body weight (S-40 group).

Ten patients who had ameloblastoma of the mandible underwent surgery for resection of the tumor followed by immediate mandibular reconstruction with free autogenous nerve grafting using the greater auricular nerve. One year after surgery pain perception and tactile sensibility were completely restored in eight of the ten patients.
