Listening to the heart-brain talk: persistent depressive symptoms are associated with hsCRP in apparently healthy individuals at high risk for coronary artery disease.

Background: This study examined whether mild-to-moderate depressive symptoms are associated with increased high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels in apparently healthy individuals at high risk for coronary artery disease. We investigated in individuals whether: (1) current depressive symptoms were associated with increased hsCRP and IL-6 levels; (2) persistent depressive symptoms at two time points 6 months apart were associated with hsCRP and IL-6; and (3), sex-based differences in inflammation were a function of depressive symptoms.

Methods: We measured depressive symptoms (twice), hsCRP, and IL-6 (follow-up time point) in 84 apparently healthy individuals (52% women) at high cardiac risk.

Relationship between social support and autonomic function during a stress protocol in ulcerative colitis patients in remission.

Background: The relationship of psychological stress to relapse in ulcerative colitis (UC) is inconsistent. This may be due to a failure to identify patient characteristics, such as social support, which moderate the transduction of stress from the central nervous system to the immune system. In this study we tested the hypothesis that social support enhances parasympathetic modulation of heart rate in UC.

Health behaviour advice from health professionals to Canadian adults with hypertension: results from a national survey.

Background: Health professionals play an important role in providing health information to patients. The objectives of this study were to examine the type of advice that Canadians with hypertension recall receiving from health professionals to manage their condition, and to assess if there is an association between health behaviour advice provided by health professionals and self-reported engagement in health behaviour modification.

Methods: Respondents of the 2009 Survey on Living with Chronic Diseases in Canada (N = 6142) were asked about sociodemographic characteristics, health care utilization, and health behaviour modification to control hypertension.

Sterile abscess formation associated with depot leuprorelin acetate therapy for central precocious puberty.

We describe a case of an 8 year old girl with central precocious puberty. She was commenced on 3 monthly intramuscular depot Leuprorelin acetate therapy, as a result of which she developed sterile abscesses. She was converted to daily subcutaneous Leuprorelin acetate therapy with no recurrence of the abscesses.

Background: The rise in peanut allergy is a source of considerable burden in the community. A growing number of preschoolchildren have been identified as peanut sensitized in the course of investigation of other allergic conditions. Although many have never knowingly ingested peanuts and their clinical reactivity is not known, it has been common practice to place these children on avoidance diets for many years.

This guidance is intended to encourage best practice among researchers into ultrasound bio-effects in terms of how they determine and report the exposure conditions used in their studies. It covers both diagnostic and therapeutic applications of ultrasound and is intended to be useful to the researchers themselves, to the review boards of ethical and funding committees and to the editors and reviewers of scientific journals. Recommendations are made for reporting formats, depending on the information available, and level of the study.

Therapeutic benefit of preventive telehealth counseling in the Community Outreach Heart Health and Risk Reduction Trial.

We evaluated whether telehealth counseling augments lifestyle change and risk factor decrease in subjects at high risk for primary or secondary cardiovascular events compared to a recommended guideline for brief preventive counseling. Subjects at high risk or with coronary heart disease (35 to 74 years of age, n = 680) were randomized to active control (risk factor feedback, brief advice, handouts) or telehealth lifestyle counseling (active control plus 6 weekly 1-hour teleconferenced sessions to groups of 4 to 8 subjects). Primary outcome was questionnaire assessment of adherence to daily exercise/physical activity and diet (daily vegetable and fruit intake and restriction of fat and salt) after treatment and at 6-month follow-up.

G-octamer formation from N⁹ modified guanine derivatives.

The properties of the self-assembly of two lipophilic guanine derivatives, 2',3',5'-O-tris(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-guanosine and N⁹-(3,5-bis(tert-butyldimethylsilyloxy)-benzyl)-guanine, are described. In the presence of K+, both guanine derivatives self-associate into D₄-symmetric octamers consisting of two G-quartets stacked around a central ion.

Dynamic model of CHO cell metabolism.

Fed-batch cultures are extensively used for the production of therapeutic proteins. However, process optimization is hampered by lack of quantitative models of mammalian cellular metabolism in these cultures. This paper presents a new kinetic model of CHO cell metabolism and a novel framework for simulating the dynamics of metabolic and biosynthetic pathways of these cells grown in fed-batch culture.

Background: The care of adult patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) is challenging from a mental health perspective, as these patients continue to face a variety of biopsychosocial issues that may impact emotional functioning. Despite these issues, there are limited data on the psychosocial functioning of adults with CHD, and there are no data on the impact of parental overprotection on heart-focused anxiety in this patient population.

We present a 45-year-old woman with supraventricular tachycardia. During placement of diagnostic catheters, an interruption of the inferior vena cava was suspected. An MRI confirmed the interruption of the inferior vena cava above the level of the renal veins with azygos vein continuation up to the superior vena cava.

Behavioral neurocardiac training in hypertension: a randomized, controlled trial.

It is not established whether behavioral interventions add benefit to pharmacological therapy for hypertension. We hypothesized that behavioral neurocardiac training (BNT) with heart rate variability biofeedback would reduce blood pressure further by modifying vagal heart rate modulation during reactivity and recovery from standardized cognitive tasks ("mental stress"). This randomized, controlled trial enrolled 65 patients with uncomplicated hypertension to BNT or active control (autogenic relaxation), with six 1-hour sessions over 2 months with home practice.

Professional knowledge of child support staff: evidence from the New Jersey child support training program.

Child support enforcement (CSE) has experienced dramatic changes in the last decade; however, it is not clear whether child support staff is fully aware of the development. Using data from the New Jersey child support training program (n = 530), this article aims to evaluate the professional knowledge of child support staff. The results show that participants answered 55% of the questions on CSE correctly in the pretraining assessment.

Directing attention externally enhances agility performance: a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the efficacy of using verbal instructions to focus attention.

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate if focusing attention externally produced faster movement times compared to instructions that focused attention internally or a control set of instructions that did not explicitly focus attention when performing an agility task. A second purpose of the study was to measure participants' focus of attention during practice by use of a questionnaire. Participants (N = 20) completed 15 trials of an agility "L" run following instructions designed to induce an external (EXT), internal (INT) attentional focus or a control (CON) set of instructions inducing no specific focus of attention.

Context and cardiovascular risk modification in two regions of Ontario, Canada: a photo elicitation study.

Cardiovascular diseases, which include coronary heart diseases (CHD), remain the leading cause of death in Canada and other industrialized countries. This qualitative study used photo-elicitation, focus groups and in-depth interviews to understand health behaviour change from the perspectives of 38 people who were aware of their high risk for CHD and had received information about cardiovascular risk modification while participating in a larger intervention study. Participants were drawn from two selected regions: Sudbury and District (northern Ontario) and the Greater Toronto Area (southern Ontario).

Primary cardiac diffuse large B cell lymphoma presenting with superior vena cava syndrome.

Primary cardiac lymphomas are rare extranodal lymphomas that should be distinguished from secondary cardiac involvement by disseminated non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Cardiac lymphomas often mimic other cardiac neoplasms, including myxomas and angiosarcomas, and often require multimodality cardiac imaging, in combination with endomyocardial biopsy, excisional biopsy or pericardial fluid cytology, to establish a definitive diagnosis. A 60-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with superior vena cava syndrome secondary to a right atrial, primary cardiac diffuse large B cell lymphoma (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) is described in the present article.
