In response to pressing societal challenges, scholars are increasingly focusing on research aimed at fostering sustainable futures. We contribute to that discussion by theorizing the circular economy (CE) as an "ecology of practices." The ecology of practices concept helps to make sense of a developing field that has been heavily practitioner-driven.

Background: Gaining excessive weight during pregnancy has been linked with adverse effects including increased risk of caesarean delivery and postpartum weight retention. Despite these recognised risks, currently no UK/Ireland gestational weight gain (GWG) guidelines exist, women are not routinely weighed throughout pregnancy and consequently, women's understanding of the importance of weight management during, and post-pregnancy remains poor. The present study explored factors influencing weight change during and post-pregnancy and identified potential opportunities that could help women manage weight during these periods.

With large wildfires becoming more frequent, we must rapidly learn how megafires impact biodiversity to prioritize mitigation and improve policy. A key challenge is to discover how interactions among fire-regime components, drought and land tenure shape wildfire impacts. The globally unprecedented 2019-2020 Australian megafires burnt more than 10 million hectares, prompting major investment in biodiversity monitoring.

This case report details a case of a 52-year-old female with a history of diplopia and an elevation deficit in her right eye. Initially misdiagnosed as an atavistic retractor bulbi muscle in 2005 via MRI, symptoms persisted despite surgical excision. Follow-up MRI in 2023 confirmed no changes, ruling out other causes like nerve palsy or schwannoma, and ultimately guiding diagnosis towards an accessory extraocular muscle.

Plastic pollution is now considered globally ubiquitous, irreversible, and a planetary boundary threat. Solutions are urgently needed but their development and application are hampered by the complexity and scale of the issue. System dynamics is a technique used to understand complex behaviours of systems through model building and is useful for conceptualising the relationships between various interacting, dynamic factors, and identifying potential intervention points within the system where specific policies or innovations might have the greatest impact or meet with the greatest resistance.

Predicting how plants respond to drought requires an understanding of how physiological mechanisms and drought response strategies occur, as these strategies underlie rates of gas exchange and productivity. We assessed the response of 11 plant traits to repeated experimental droughts in four co-occurring species of central Australia. The main goals of this study were to: (i) compare the response to drought between species; (ii) evaluate whether plants acclimated to repeated drought; and (iii) examine the degree of recovery in leaf gas exchange after cessation of drought.

Hyaluronan (HA) is a glycosaminoglycan that forms a gel-like barrier in the subcutaneous (SC) space, limiting bulk fluid flow and the dispersion of SC-administered therapeutics. Recombinant human hyaluronidase PH20 (rHuPH20) facilitates the rapid delivery of co-administered therapeutics by depolymerizing HA in the SC space. Administration of rHuPH20 can induce the formation of anti-rHuPH20 antibodies, or anti-drug antibodies (ADAs), with the potential to bind endogenous PH20 hyaluronidase in the adult testes and epididymis.

Bow Hunter's syndrome (BHS) is an uncommon condition characterized by impingement of one of the two vertebral arteries induced by cervical rotation, causing symptomatic vertebrobasilar insufficiency of the posterior cerebral circulation. We report a case of BHS in an 84-year-old male. Two months following a motor vehicle accident, the patient presented to an urgent care facility with subsequent transfer to the emergency department with complaints of lightheadedness upon right-lateral head movement.

Iliac vein stenting is performed when sufficient venous patency is not achieved via angioplasty or lysis. Iliac vein stenting is known to be effective; however, occlusion of the stent occurs occasionally. There is a lack of effective treatment options for those with failed prior venous stents, and traditional methods may involve the removal of the stent and surgical reconstruction.

The catecholamine neurotransmitter dopamine is classically known for regulation of central nervous system (CNS) functions such as reward, movement, and cognition. Increasing evidence also indicates that dopamine regulates critical functions in peripheral organs and is an important immunoregulatory factor. We have previously shown that dopamine increases NF-κB activity, inflammasome activation, and the production of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β in human macrophages.

Understanding the biophysical limitations on forest carbon across diverse ecological regions is crucial for accurately assessing and managing forest carbon stocks. This study investigates the role of climate and disturbance on the spatial variation of two key forest carbon pools: aboveground carbon (AGC) and soil organic carbon (SOC). Using plot-level carbon pool estimates from Nepal's national forest inventory and structural equation modelling, we explore the relationship of forest carbon stocks to broad-scale climatic water and energy availability and fine-scale terrain and disturbance.

The sensitivity of the eye at night would lead to complete saturation of the eye during the day. Therefore, the sensitivity of the eye must be down-regulated during the day to maintain visual acuity. In the Drosophila eye, the opening of TRP and TRPL channels leads to an influx of Ca that triggers down-regulation of further responses to light, including the movement of the TRPL channel and Gα proteins out of signaling complexes found in actin-mediated microvillar extensions of the photoreceptor cells (the rhabdomere).

Traits with intuitive names, a clear scope and explicit description are essential for all trait databases. The lack of unified, comprehensive, and machine-readable plant trait definitions limits the utility of trait databases, including reanalysis of data from a single database, or analyses that integrate data across multiple databases. Both can only occur if researchers are confident the trait concepts are consistent within and across sources.
