The Outcomes of an Educational Program Involving Men as Motivators to Encourage Women to Be Screened for Cervical Cancer.

Cervical cancer is a major health problem in South Africa. Despite having a national, population-based screening program, screening coverage is as low as 13%. Based on the role men could play in increasing cervical cancer screening and the low level of knowledge, men living in the study setting had about this health issue, we developed and pilot tested an educational program aimed at empowering men to teach their female partners and family members about cervical cancer and motivate them to be screened.

The Knowledge of South African Men Relating to Cervical Cancer and Cervical Cancer Screening.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer in South African women, but the most common cancer in Black women. Despite having a national cervical cancer screening programme, most women present with advanced disease. Men play a role in cervical cancer as the HPV, the major cause of cervical cancer, is sexually transmitted.

Development of a Hypertension Health Literacy Assessment Tool for use in primary healthcare clinics in South Africa, Gauteng.

Background: Hypertension is a universal risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in both the ageing and obese populations and patients must be literate in hypertension health issues to participate actively in the management of their disease. Little research has been done to investigate hypertension health literacy levels among South Africans.

Aim: To develop a Hypertension Heath Literacy Assessment Tool to establish patients' comprehension of the health education they receive in primary healthcare (PHC) clinics in Tshwane, Gauteng, South Africa.

Self-Management Support Needs of Patients with Chronic Diseases in a South African Township: A Qualitative Study.

Despite the need for chronic disease self-management strategies in developing countries, few studies have aimed to contextually adapt programs; yet culture has a direct impact on the way people view themselves and their environment. This study aimed to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and self-management needs and practices of patients with chronic diseases. Four patient focus groups (n = 32), 2 patient interviews, group observations, and key informant interviews (n = 12) were conducted.
