[Renal metastasis originating from colon cancer : a case report].

Aberrant DNA methylation in noncancerous gastric mucosa is strongly implicated in gastric carcinogenesis and could be a useful biomarker of GC risk. Methods: The source of the data was the Japan Collaborative Cohort (JACC) study which covered the period of 1988 to 2009. A representative sample of 64,185 women was used.

Multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells are distinct stem cells in mesenchymal cell populations with the capacity to self-renew, to differentiate into cells representative of all three germ layers from a single cell, and to repair damaged tissues by spontaneous differentiation into tissue-specific cells without forming teratomas. We describe step-by-step procedures for isolating and evaluating these cells. Muse cells are also a practical cell source for human induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells with markedly high generation efficiency.

Colonization of Streptococcus mutans on esthetic brackets: self-ligating vs conventional.

Introduction: Self-ligating orthodontic brackets rely on clips, rather than ligatures, to hold the archwire in place. It is unknown whether replacing ligatures with clips affects the adherence of Streptococcus mutans. The aim of this research was to evaluate whether self-ligating brackets have an advantage over conventional brackets as determined by the adherence of S mutans.

Functional melanocytes are readily reprogrammable from multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (muse) cells, distinct stem cells in human fibroblasts.

The induction of melanocytes from easily accessible stem cells has attracted attention for the treatment of melanocyte dysfunctions. We found that multilineage-differentiating stress-enduring (Muse) cells, a distinct stem cell type among human dermal fibroblasts, can be readily reprogrammed into functional melanocytes, whereas the remainder of the fibroblasts do not contribute to melanocyte differentiation. Muse cells can be isolated as cells positive for stage-specific embryonic antigen-3, a marker for undifferentiated human embryonic stem cells, and differentiate into cells representative of all three germ layers from a single cell, while also being nontumorigenic.

Background: Endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (EUS-FNA) provides high diagnostic accuracy with a low incidence of procedural complications. However, it occasionally causes serious complications, and factors that increase the susceptibility to such adverse events remain unknown.

Effect of fluoride on tooth erosion around orthodontic brackets.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of fluoride in prevention of tooth erosion around orthodontic brackets under erosive challenge. Edgewise brackets were bonded with Transbond™ XT composite on vestibular surface of 40 bovine incisors. Paratesticular myxoid/round cell liposarcoma harboring type 3 DDIT3-FUS fusion gene: report of a very rare case.

Myxoid/round cell liposarcomas are rare mesenchymal neoplasms. They preferentially occur in the lower extremity, and most of them have type 1 or type 2 DDIT3-FUS fusion gene. We report here a very rare case of myxoid/round cell liposarcoma of the paratesticular region with type 3 DDIT3-FUS fusion gene.

Genomic vulnerability to LINE-1 hypomethylation is a potential determinant of the clinicogenetic features of multiple myeloma.

Background: The aim of this study was to clarify the role of global hypomethylation of repetitive elements in determining the genetic and clinical features of multiple myeloma (MM).

Methods: We assessed global methylation levels using four repetitive elements (long interspersed nuclear element-1 (LINE-1), Alu Ya5, Alu Yb8, and Satellite-α) in clinical samples comprising 74 MM samples and 11 benign control samples (7 cases of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and 4 samples of normal plasma cells (NPC)). We also evaluated copy-number alterations using array-based comparative genomic hybridization, and performed methyl-CpG binding domain sequencing (MBD-seq).

[Comparative examination of preparation time in docetaxel hydrate formulation].

Docetaxel hydrate(DTX), a taxane anticancer drug, is known to be effective against a wide range of cancers, including breast cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The DTX preparation Taxotere(2-vial DTX)has conventionally required dissolution in the attached solvent, while Onetaxotere(1-vial DTX), a newer product, is provided as a solution. This allows reduction of preparation time, so that improvement in operational efficiency can be expected.

Microbial colonization in orthodontic mini-implants.

Peri-implant inflammation contributes for loss of secondary stability of orthodontic mini-implants. The investigation of microbial colonization in this area would benefit its control, and consequently favor the long-term success of mini-implants. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the establishment and the evolution of microbial colonization process in orthodontic mini-implants for 3 months, since the time of their installation.

In situ evaluation of orthodontic elastomeric chains.

The hypothesis tested in this study was that intraoral exposure of elastomeric chains alters their tensile strength. For such purpose, it was evaluated the in situ behavior of different elastomeric chains stretched for 3 weeks. The utility of serum N-ERC/mesothelin as a biomarker of ovarian carcinoma.

Ovarian carcinoma has been difficult to diagnose at an early stage. Recently, it has been recognized that the measurement of blood N-ERC/mesothelin levels aids early detection in and postoperative therapeutic monitoring of patients with mesothelioma, who have been exposed to asbestos. ERC/mesothelin has also been reported to be expressed in ovarian carcinoma.

Background: Dysregulation of microRNAs (miRNAs) has been implicated in bladder cancer (BCa), although the mechanism is not fully understood.

Objective: We aimed to explore the involvement of epigenetic alteration of miRNA expression in BCa.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Two BCa cell lines (T24 and UM-UC-3) were treated with 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (5-aza-dC) and 4-phenylbutyric acid (PBA), after which their miRNA expression profiles were analyzed using a TaqMan array (Life Technologies, Carlsbad, CA, USA).
