Article Synopsis
  • A study on 173 female patients with recurrent reproductive failure (RRF) found a notably higher prevalence of HLA genes associated with celiac disease (CD) and non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), compared to the general population (69% vs. 35%-40%).
  • Only a small percentage (2.3%) of the patients were diagnosed with CD, but those with HLA genetic susceptibility showed a significant link to higher rates of hypothyroidism (48.7% vs. 26.92%).
  • Patients with both HLA susceptibility and thyroid disease had better pregnancy outcomes when on a gluten-free diet and using levothyroxine, indicating potential benefits of these interventions for reproductive success.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a safe and effective bariatric surgery in terms of weight loss and longterm improvement or resolution of comorbidities. However, its achilles heel is the possible association with the development with the novo and/or worsening of pre-existing gastroesophageal reflux disease. The anatomical and mechanical changes that this technique induces in the esophagogastric junction, support or contradict this hypothesis.

In view of the strong anti-inflammatory activity of glucocorticoids (GC) they are used in the treatment of almost all inflammatory lung diseases. In particular, inhaled GC (IGC) allow high drug concentrations to be deposited in the lung and may reduce the incidence of adverse effects associated with systemic administration. However, rapid absorption through the highly absorbent surface of the lung epithelium may limit the success of localized therapy.

Background: The most-used ventilation mode in home mechanical ventilation (HMV) is spontaneous-timed, designed to be essentially spontaneous with a programmed backup rate.

Research Question: We do not know the real frequency of activation of controlled cycles, nor its associated factors.

Study Design: and Methods: We conducted a single-center cohort study of patients with chronic hypoventilation who were started on HMV.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms in the respiratory tract of patients with an excessive inflammatory context are difficult to eradicate. New medicines that simultaneously target biofilms and inflammation should be developed.

Hypothesis: Co-delivery of Thymus vulgaris essential oil (EOT) and tobramycin (TB) by nanostructured archaeolipids carriers (NAC) could support nebulization as well as improve EOT and TB antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibiofilm activity.

A pre-gestational thyroid reserve of iodine is crucial to guarantee the increased demand for thyroid hormone production of early pregnancy. An iodine intake ≥150 µg/day is currently recommended. The objective of this study was to assess average pre-gestational food-based iodine consumption in pregnant women at their first prenatal visit (<12 gestational weeks), and its association with adverse materno-fetal events (history of miscarriages, early fetal losses, Gestational Diabetes, prematurity, caesarean sections, and new-borns large/small for gestational age).

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increases the risk of adverse events in pregnancy and jeopardizes long-term health of the mother and offspring. There is currently no consensus as to what screening strategies improve the efficiency of GDM diagnosis. Which criteria should be used? Is the one-step or two-step procedure better? There is no agreement as to what the best dietary approach in the treatment of GDM is.

Background: Thymus vulgaris essential oil (T) could be an alternative to classical antibiotics against bacterial biofilms, which show increased tolerance to antibiotics and host defence systems and contribute to the persistence of chronic bacterial infections.

Hypothesis: A nanovesicular formulation of T may chemically protect the structure and relative composition of its multiple components, potentially improving its antibacterial and antibiofilm activity.

Study Design: We prepared and structurally characterized T in two types of nanovesicles: nanoliposomes (L80-T) made of Soybean phosphatidylcholine (SPC) and Polysorbate 80 (P80) [SPC:P80:T 1:0.

Neutrophilic panniculitis is an infrequent but characteristic adverse event under therapy with BRAF inhibitors (BRAFi). Since the approval of vemurafenib for treatment of metastatic melanoma in 2011, only two cases of neutrophilic panniculitis in malignancies other than melanoma have been published. Histiocytoid infiltrates of immature neutrophils resembling histiocytes or myelocytes have been reported in Sweet's syndrome and rarely in other neutrophilic dermatoses.

Background: Obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) increase the morbidity of the mother and newborn, which could increase further should they coexist. We aimed to determine the risk of adverse pregnancy and neonatal outcomes associated with excess weight (EW), and within this group identify potential differences between those with and without GDM.

Methods: We carried out a post-hoc analysis of the St.

Background: Histamine is a key immunoregulatory mediator in immediate-type hypersensitivity reactions and chronic inflammatory responses, in particular histamine suppresses proinflammatory responses to bacterial ligands, through histamine receptor 2 (H2R). The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of histamine and H2R on bacteria-induced inflammatory responses in patients with IBD.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were obtained from patients with Crohn's disease, patients with ulcerative colitis, and healthy controls.

Objective: The use of the new International Association of the Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups criteria (IADPSGC) for the diagnosis of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) results in an increased prevalence of GDM. Whether their introduction improves pregnancy outcomes has yet to be established. We sought to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of one-step IADPSGC for screening and diagnosis of GDM compared with traditional two-step Carpenter-Coustan (CC) criteria.

Introduction: Inflammatory external root resorption (IERR) requires damage or loss of the protective layer and an inflammatory process in the unprotected root surface. Infection of the pulp space can occur after a serious injury and stimulate an inflammatory response. When the inflammatory stimulus is long-standing, the destructive phase will continue until the stimulation is removed.
