Guideline-Based Telemedicine Assessment of Orthopedic Low-Risk Conditions by General Practitioners is Not Inferior to that of Face-to-Face Consultations with Specialists in the Emergency Department: A Randomized Trial.

There is a lack of randomized controlled trials focusing on orthopedic telemedicine (TM). The objective of this research was to compare the diagnostic accuracy and pattern of TM consultations of low-risk orthopedic patients performed by general practitioners (GPs) with those of face-to-face evaluations by orthopedists at an emergency department (ED). This randomized, single-center study was conducted between October 2021 and November 2022 on patients at an ED.

Telemedicine: Is It a Tool for Orthopedics?

Purpose Of Review: The purpose of this paper is to illustrate how telemedicine can be beneficial in many areas of orthopedic clinical practice through a literature narrative review. In addition, we discuss advantages, barriers, and enablers of such technology.

Recent Findings: Telemedicine in orthopedics was initially described to discuss simple cases among non-specialist doctors through videoconferencing.

Clinical pathway improves medical practice in total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: Clinical pathways in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) consist of general guidelines, including several topics as early rehabilitation and antibiotic systematization, which are used to improve patient's management, decrease complication rates and enhance clinical outcomes. The primary purpose of this study was to assess whether the use of a clinical pathway for TKA can contribute to reduce LOS and healthcare costs in a private hospital, without an increase in the hospital readmission rate. We also aimed to assess whether care providers adhered to the recommendations mainly antibiotic use and physical therapy.

Analysis of 500 anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions from a private institutional register.

Purpose: The aims of this study are to describe the epidemiological characteristics of anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions in a private hospital in Brazil and to determine trends in medical practice for comparison with previous studies.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the anterior cruciate ligament institutional register to obtain data from all patients who underwent primary anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction from July 2014 to June 2016. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the sample.

Periprosthetic humeral fractures after reverse shoulder arthroplasty. Case report.

Periprosthetic fractures is a severe complication after joint replacement. The rapidly increase of reverse shoulder arthroplasty surgeries, periprosthetic humeral fractures, which are described as rare, may increase in the near future. We report the case of displaced humeral fracture bellow the stem of reverse shoulder prosthesis.

Tibial shaft fracture and ankle injury - Case report.

The authors report on a case of tibial shaft fracture associated with ankle injury. The clinical, radiological and surgical characteristics are discussed. Assessment of associated injuries is often overlooked and these injuries are hard to diagnose.

Postoperative infection in patients undergoing inspection of orthopedic damage due to external fixation.

Objective: To conduct a retrospective analysis on cases undergoing inspection of orthopedic damage, at an orthopedic emergency service in a teaching hospital, with the aim of evaluating patients with postoperative infection after conversion to internal osteosynthesis.

Methods: This was a retrospective analysis covering the period from June 2012 to June 2013, on patients who underwent inspection of orthopedic damage due to external fixation and subsequently were converted to definitive osteosynthesis using a nail or plate.

Results: We found an infection rate of 13.

Combined reconstruction of the posterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament using a single femoral tunnel.

Purpose: Lesions of the medial collateral ligament (MCL) are the most common knee ligament injuries, and lesions associated with the anterior cruciate ligament or the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in knee dislocations should be reconstructed to prevent failure of the central pivot reconstruction. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of combined PCL/MCL reconstruction using a single femoral tunnel with a minimum 2-year follow-up.

Method: A retrospective study of thirteen patients with combined PCL/MCL injuries was conducted.
