It is recognized that integrating the role of nurse practitioners (NPs) into new care models can positively impact patient outcomes and the healthcare system. The Canton of Vaud is currently in the initial phase of developing this role. The University Hospital of Lausanne currently employs 15 NPs across various clinical departments, and several initiatives to further develop NP roles are in progress.

Purpose: Cancer care is undergoing a conceptual shift with the introduction of the principles of patient-centered care to support patients' individual needs. These needs include those related to hospitality during cancer treatments. This paper aims to provide an extension of the supportive care framework by bringing in the hospitality approach inspired by the hotel industry.

Background: The hyperventilation provocation test (HPTest) is a diagnostic tool for idiopathic hyperventilation syndrome (HVS), encountered in some long-COVID patients. However, interpretation of the HPTest remains unclear regarding the relevant PETCO2 values to focus on and whether subjective symptoms should be considered. This study aimed to re-evaluate objective HPTest results for diagnosing HVS by determining accurate PETCO2 kinetics in two groups of patients previously screened via the Nijmegen questionnaire (NQ).

Introduction: Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are a rare cause of primary lung tumors, most often solitary and in more than 50% of cases detected in individuals under 40 years of age.

Observation: A 17-year-old patient consulted in pneumology for development of hemoptysis over a period of two weeks. Thoracic computed tomography revealed a left lower lobe cavity 24mm in diameter with bronchial fistulation and hydro-aeric level.

In the context of breast cancer metastasis study, we have shown in an in vitro model of cell migration that IGDQ-exposing (IsoLeu-Gly-Asp-Glutamine type I Fibronectin motif) monolayers (SAMs) on gold sustain the adhesion of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells by triggering Focal Adhesion Kinase and integrin activation. Such tunable scaffolds are used to mimic the tumor extracellular environment, inducing and controlling cell migration. The observed migratory behavior induced by the IGDQ-bearing peptide gradient along the surface allows to separate cell subpopulations with a "stationary" or "migratory" phenotype.

Eosinophils are rare, multifunctional granulocytes. Their growth, survival, and tissue migration mainly depend on interleukin (IL)-5 in physiological conditions and on IL-5 and IL-33 in inflammatory conditions. Preclinical evidence supports an immunological role for eosinophils as innate immune cells and as agents of the adaptive immune response.

Patient and public involvement (PPI) in research is increasingly recognized and encouraged by public and funding bodies. Although gaining momentum, the implementation of PPI in Switzerland remains recent. Since 2021, the Laboratoire des Patients, affiliated to the Swiss Cancer Center Léman (SCCL), aims to establish a PPI model for oncology research adapted to the local context that will assist researchers to apply PPI approaches within their projects.

Background: Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients experience distressing symptoms that can significantly impact their health-related quality of life (HRQoL). We analyzed the implementation of a nurse-led consultation (NLC) and explored potential associations with symptom burden in HNC patients. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed routinely collected data to describe the implementation of the nurse-led interventions and the evolution of the M.

The University Hospital of Lausanne has heavily invested in the development of interdisciplinary oncology centers to improve the quality of care, and structure research and training. By integrating specialist nurses, it follows international recommendations. These specialists' nurses rephrase the information given by the doctor and ensure patients' understanding.

Originally simply reported to be in a stable and irreversible growth arrest , senescent cells are now clearly associated with normal and pathological ageing . They are characterized by several biomarkers and changes in gene expression that may depend on epigenetic factors, such as histone acetylation, involving a balance between histone acetyltransferases (HATs) and histone deacetylases (HDACs). In this study, we investigate the expression and the role of HDACs on the senescent phenotype of dermal fibroblasts.

Compared with the general population, oncology patients face a higher morbidity and mortality caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, health systems had to quickly adapt cancer care in order to maintain the best quality and patient safety. From March to May and from October to December 2020, 254 patients diagnosed with cancer and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 benefited from a tele-health monitoring at the Oncology Department at CHUV.

Background: Targeted lung denervation (TLD) is a novel bronchoscopic therapy that disrupts parasympathetic pulmonary nerve input to the lung reducing clinical consequences of cholinergic hyperactivity. The AIRFLOW-1 study assessed safety and TLD dose in patients with moderate-to-severe, symptomatic COPD. This analysis evaluated the long-term impact of TLD on COPD exacerbations, pulmonary function, and quality of life over 3 years of follow up.

Background And Aims: The occurrence rate of adverse events (AEs) related to care among hospitalized oncology patients in Switzerland remains unknown. The primary objective of this study was to describe, for the first time, the occurrence rate, type, severity of harm, and preventability of AEs related to care, reported in health records of hospitalized hematological and solid-tumor cancer patients in three Swiss hospitals.

Methods: Using an adapted version of the validated Global Trigger Tool (GTT) from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, we conducted a retrospective record review of patients discharged from oncology units over a 6-week period during 2018.

Like nanomaterials, bacteria have been unknowingly used for centuries. They hold significant economic potential for fuel and medicinal compound production. Their full exploitation, however, is impeded by low biological activity and stability in industrial reactors.

Objective: Patients with severe asthma require high-dose inhaled corticosteroids, with or without add-on treatments, to maintain asthma control. Because symptom control remains unsatisfactory in some patients despite these therapies, maintenance therapy with oral corticosteroids (OCS) remains considered a treatment option by physicians. Besides physician-diagnosed exacerbations, many patients intermittently self-medicate with OCS during episodes of worsening symptoms or as a prevention of such episodes.

Background: In the BACE trial, a 3-month (3 m) intervention with azithromycin, initiated at the onset of an infectious COPD exacerbation requiring hospitalization, decreased the rate of a first treatment failure (TF); the composite of treatment intensification (TI), step-up in hospital care (SH) and mortality.

Objectives: (1) To investigate the intervention's effect on recurrent events, and (2) to identify clinical subgroups most likely to benefit, determined from the incidence rate of TF and hospital readmissions.

Methods: Enrolment criteria included the diagnosis of COPD, a smoking history of ≥10 pack-years and ≥ 1 exacerbation in the previous year.

Introduction : In the context of an upsurge in the number of asylum seekers arriving in Switzerland in 2015, caregivers encountered new issues. Background : We lack local studies that simultaneously analyze asylum seekers' experiences of the healthcare system and the perceptions of health professionals in contact with asylum seekers. Objectives : To assess the health problems of this population in order to gain a better understanding of their specific needs and to implement best practice interventions in order to improve access to care and efficiency of care.

Article Synopsis
  • Early detection and treatment of cancer can make a big difference in helping patients feel better.
  • Researchers looked at how the immune system reacts to changes in lung cells before they become cancerous.
  • They found that understanding these changes can help create new ways to spot lung cancer early and develop treatments that use the immune system to fight it.

Rationale: Targeted lung denervation (TLD) is a novel bronchoscopic treatment for the disruption of parasympathetic innervation of the lungs.

Objectives: To assess safety, feasibility, and dosing of TLD in patients with moderate to severe COPD using a novel device design.

Methods: Thirty patients with COPD (forced expiratory volume in 1 s 30-60%) were 1:1 randomized in a double-blinded fashion to receive TLD with either 29 or 32 W.
