Preparation of Octacalcium Phosphate Thin Film with Exposing Reactive Crystalline Plane in Biological Fluid.

Octacalcium phosphate (OCP) has been used as a bone replacement material due to its higher bone affinity. However, the mechanism of affinity has not been clarified. Since the 100 crystalline plane of OCP is closely involved in the biological reactions during osteogenesis, it is important to expose the 100 crystalline plane of OCP to the biological fluid to precisely measure the interfacial reactions.

Direct Immobilization of Folic Acid Molecules on Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles with Substitution and Coordination Phenomena.

We successfully synthesized folic acid (FA) immobilized hydroxyapatite (HA) nanoparticles without using a mediative reagent (e.g., silane coupling agent), and the immobilization states were evaluated and discussed.

Biological Surface Layer Formation on Bioceramic Particles for Protein Adsorption.

In the biomedical fields of bone regenerative therapy, the immobilization of proteins on the bioceramic particles to maintain their highly ordered structures is significantly important. In this review, we comprehensively discussed the importance of the specific surface layer, which can be called "non-apatitic layer", affecting the immobilization of proteins on particles such as hydroxyapatite and amorphous silica. It was suggested that the water molecules and ions contained in the non-apatitic layer can determine and control the protein immobilization states.

Preparation of Waterborne Silicone-Modified Polyurethane Nanofibers and the Effect of Crosslinking Agents on Physical Properties.

Silicone-modified polyurethane (PUSX) refers to the introduction of a silicone short chain into the polyurethane chain to make it have the dual properties of silicone and polyurethane (PU). It can be used in many fields, such as coatings, films, molding products, adhesives, and so on. The use of organic solvents to achieve the fiberization of silicone-modified polyurethane has been reported.

Characterization of an uncooled mid-infrared Schottky photodetector based on a 2D Au/PtSi/p-Si nanohole array at a higher light modulation frequency.

In this study, an uncooled 2D nanohole array PtSi/p-Si Schottky mid-infrared (MIR) photodetector, which is essential for on-chip Si-based low-barrier MIR detectors, is presented. Room temperature operation introduces susceptibility to thermal noise and can impact stability. Through modulation frequency and reverse bias optimization, the stability improved by 7 times at 170 Hz and -3.

Cystic Atypical Carcinoid in the Thymus Causing Mediastinal Bleeding Followed by Hemothorax.

We report a case of cystic atypical carcinoid in the thymus that caused mediastinal bleeding. Atypical thymic carcinoid is a relatively rare disease, and few cases of cystic atypical carcinoid have been reported. There are some reports of anterior mediastinal bleeding caused by thymic tumors or cysts; however, reports on atypical carcinoid-associated bleeding are unavailable.

Thoracoscopic Right Lower Lobectomy in a Patient With a Common Trunk of the Right Pulmonary Veins.

Varied branching patterns of the pulmonary veins are widely known; however, the common trunk of the right pulmonary veins is sparsely described. We report the details of a right lower lobectomy in a patient with a common trunk of the right pulmonary veins. Besides an attentive interpretation of computed tomography images, 3-dimensional reconstruction aids in the preoperative recognition of this anomaly.

Room-temperature plasmonic mid-infrared photodetector based on PtSi/p-Si low Schottky-barrier junction.

In this study, a low Schottky-barrier photodetector with a plasmonic assist using a two-dimensional (2D) nanohole array was demonstrated, which receives mid-infrared (MIR) light at room temperature. In the structural design, it was confirmed that the 2D nanohole-array photodetector has high absorbance in the MIR region using rigorous coupled-wave analysis. The result showed that the nanoholes formed in p-type silicon (p-Si), platinum silicide (PtSi), to form Schottky barriers, and gold (Au), for photocurrent extraction, had high absorbance in the MIR region along with the Fabry-Perot resonance mode toward the depth of the nanohole.

Coordination effect of citric acid to Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite on phase transition.

The phase transition of Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) with citric acid (Cit) coordination was investigated. Cit promoted the substitution of K ions into CDHA to generate the HA phase. The K-doping increased the phase transition temperature of CDHA, providing the transition to β- and α-tricalcium phosphates at higher temperatures.

Resection and postoperative radiation therapy for desmoid fibromatosis of the chest wall in a young woman.

Background: Surgery is an effective treatment for desmoid fibromatosis, but it may be difficult, depending on the location or local spread of the tumor, and the decision to perform surgery must be made carefully. We herein report a case of desmoid fibromatosis of the chest wall in a young woman suspected of having invasion to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd ribs.

Case Presentation: A 35-year-old woman had been aware of dry cough and right chest pain, so she was referred to our hospital.

Evaluating the Platelet Distribution Width-to-Plateletcrit Ratio as a Prognostic Marker for Patients With Breast Cancer.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate plateletcrit (PCT) and platelet distribution width-to-PCT ratio (PDW/PCT) as potential prognostic biomarkers in patients with breast cancer.

Patients And Methods: Information of 337 patients was retrospectively reviewed. The Cox regression proportional hazards model was used to evaluate the prognostic value of PCT and PDW/PCT compared to the platelet distribution width-to-platelet count ratio (PDW/P) and red cell distribution width-to-platelet count ratio (RDW/P).

Interactions between rat cortico-striatal slice cultures and neutrophil-like HL60 cells under thrombin challenge: Toward elucidation of pathological events in intracerebral hemorrhage.

Neutrophils constitute the major population of infiltrating leukocytes after stroke including intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH), and these cells may exhibit pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory phenotypes depending on the external stimuli. Here we constructed an experimental system to evaluate how the properties of neutrophils were influenced by the injured brain tissues. HL60 cells differentiated into neutrophils were added to the culture medium of neonatal rat cortico-striatal slices maintained at liquid-air interface.

Ciliated muconodular papillary tumor of the lung: a case report and literature review.

Ciliated muconodular papillary tumor (CMPT) of the lung is characterized as a peripheral low-grade malignant tumor with ciliated columnar cells and goblet cells with basaloid cell proliferation. Herein, we report on a case of CMPT with a radiologically abnormal shadow which was reminiscent of adenocarcinoma. The patient underwent right S6 + S8a segmentectomy because an intraoperative biopsy suggested CMPT, the malignancy of which was difficult to distinguish; however, the tumor was small and located in the peripheral lung.

Effect of insufficient temporal coherence on visibility contrast in X-ray grating interferometry.

X-ray grating interferometry, which has been spotlighted in the last decade as a multi-modal X-ray imaging technique, can provide three independent images, i.e., absorption, differential-phase, and visibility-contrast images.

Non-Precious-Metal Catalytic Systems Involving Iron or Cobalt Carboxylates and Alkyl Isocyanides for Hydrosilylation of Alkenes with Hydrosiloxanes.

A mixture of an iron or a cobalt carboxylate and an isocyanide ligand catalyzed the hydrosilylation of alkenes with hydrosiloxanes with high efficiency (TON >10(3)) and high selectivity. The Fe catalyst showed excellent activity for hydrosilylation of styrene derivatives, whereas the Co catalyst was widely effective in reaction of alkenes. Both of them catalyzed the reaction with allylic ethers.

Poly(N-cyanoethylethyleneimine): a new nanoscale template for biomimetic silicification.

Poly(N-cyanoethylethyleneimine) (PCEI) obtained by Michael addition of linear poly(ethyleneimine) (LPEI) with acrylonitrile provided novel nanocrystalline entities which could serve as catalytic templates affording nanosheet-based structured silica under mild conditions.

X-ray phase imaging: from synchrotron to hospital.

With the aim of clinical applications of X-ray phase imaging based on Talbot-Lau-type grating interferometry to joint diseases and breast cancer, machines employing a conventional X-ray generator have been developed and installed in hospitals. The machine operation especially for diagnosing rheumatoid arthritis is described, which relies on the fact that cartilage in finger joints can be depicted with a dose of several milligray. The palm of a volunteer observed with 19 s exposure (total scan time: 32 s) is reported with a depicted cartilage feature in joints.

Controlled synthesis and tunable properties of ultrathin silica nanotubes through spontaneous polycondensation on polyamine fibrils.

This paper describes a facile approach to a biomimetic rapid fabrication of ultrathin silica nanotubes with a highly uniform diameter of 10 nm and inner hollow of around 3 nm. The synthesis is carried out through a spontaneous polycondensation of alkoxysilane on polyamine crystalline fibrils that were conveniently produced from the neutralization of a solution of protonated linear polyethyleneimine (LPEI-H(+)) by alkali compounds. A simple mixing the fibrils with alkoxysilane in aqueous solution allowed for the rapid formation of silica to produce LPEI@silica hybrid nanotubes.

Difficulty in complete transarterial embolization for pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma with massive hemoptysis.

A 43-year-old woman suffering from massive hemoptysis from pulmonary benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) at the left lung hilum underwent bronchial and nonbronchial transarterial embolization (TAE) using gelatin sponge particles and n-butyl 2-cyanoacrylate during three interventional procedures. However, since complete embolization of the tumor was difficult despite decreased tumor size, the tumor was surgically resected 3 months after the last interventional procedure. This case demonstrates the difficulty of complete TAE for pulmonary BML because of its hypervascularity and the rich communications between bronchial and nonbronchial anastomotic arteries.

Iron promoted conjugate addition: implication of the six-centered mechanism based on the isolation of the iron-enolate intermediate.

Treatment of (η(1)-mesityl)(2)Fe(κ(2)-TMEDA) (1') with an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound results in 1,4-addition of the mesityl group to give an iron enolate quantitatively. The Z-configuration of the enolate suggested the six-centered mechanism for the conjugate addition.

Subcutaneous rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon: a case report.

It is well known that rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon can be associated with open injuries and that closed rupture of the flexor hallucis longus tendon is rare. Tendon injuries of the foot can occur secondary to direct, indirect, or repetitive injury. Repetitive tendon injuries can cause tendinitis or stenosing tenosynovitis.

[A case of laryngeal adenosquamous carcinoma].

We report a rare case of adenosquamous carcinoma of the larynx. A 38-year-old man with a 9-month history of progressive hoarseness and dyspnea during exercise and sudden-onset breathing difficulty was unable to be intubated and underwent a tracheostomy at the emergency department. He was found in endoscopic examination of the larynx to have a large smooth subglottic mass with laryngeal stenosis.

Effect of TMEDA on iron-catalyzed coupling reactions of ArMgX with alkyl halides.

A new reaction mechanism for the iron-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of ArMgX with alkyl halides using (TMEDA)FeAr(2) and (TMEDA)Fe(Ar)Br is proposed on the basis of the isolation and reaction of these organoiron intermediates.
