Article Synopsis
  • - Obstructive nephropathy (ON) is a reversible condition that can cause acute kidney injury, resulting from blockage in the urinary tracts; it may not always present with hydronephrosis, leading to a form called non-dilated obstructive uropathy (NDOU).
  • - NDOU typically occurs in older males and can present symptoms like low urine output, abdominal pain, and high serum creatinine levels; it often stems from external ureter compression due to conditions like retroperitoneal fibrosis or tumors.
  • - Effective treatments include minimally invasive methods like ureteric stenting or nephrostomy, and timely diagnosis is crucial for managing the obstruction and potentially reversing kidney damage.

Nonsense variants can inactivate gene function by causing the synthesis of truncated proteins or by inducing nonsense mediated decay of messenger RNAs. The occurrence of such variants in the genomes of livestock species is modulated by multiple demographic and selective factors. Even though nonsense variants can have causal effects on embryo lethality, abortions, and disease, their genomic distribution and segregation in domestic goats have not been characterized in depth yet.

Background: Improving prognosis of BC patients has drawn the attention of health care professionals on disease related long-term side effects and on the multiple treatments BC patients must undergo. Despite advances in procedures, surgery still has multiple detrimental effects, including pain, edema, and limited mobility. For this reason, fostering adapted physical activity (APA) and healthy lifestyle (including a balanced diet and weight management) should become an everyday purpose of healthcare professionals.

Background: Goats were domesticated in the Fertile Crescent about 10,000 years before present (YBP) and subsequently spread across Eurasia and Africa. This dispersal is expected to generate a gradient of declining genetic diversity with increasing distance from the areas of early livestock management. Previous studies have reported the existence of such genetic cline in European goat populations, but they were based on a limited number of microsatellite markers.

Aim: The main challenge during breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is to obtain clear margins, especially in patients with ductal carcinoma (DCIS) due to the absence of well-defined nodules. Many surgical approaches have been used in an attempt to reduce the positive margin rate. The aim of this retrospective study is to compare the cavity shave margin technique with standard surgery and the intraoperative evaluation of surgical margins.

In chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients, several risk factors contribute to the development of endothelial dysfunction (ED), which can be described as an alteration in the cell structure or in the function of the endothelium. Among the well-known CKD-related risk factors capable of altering the production of endothelium-derived relaxing factors, we include asymmetric dimethylarginine increase, reduced dimethylarginine dimethylamine hydrolase enzyme activity, low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, hyperhomocysteinemia, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, alteration of calcium phosphorus metabolism, and early aging. In this review, we also examined the most important techniques useful for studying ED in humans, which are divided into indirect and direct methods.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study explored the effectiveness of contrast enhancement ultrasound (CEUS) as a non-invasive method for identifying sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) in early breast cancer patients, comparing it to the traditional sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) technique.
  • - Conducted as part of a larger phase 3 study, the research involved patients undergoing surgery for early breast cancer, where CEUS helped locate and mark lymph nodes for later analysis, with a focus on identifying any cancerous cells present.
  • - Results showed that CEUS successfully identified and marked lymph nodes in most patients, with a significant portion demonstrating pathological findings, indicating its potential as a safe alternative for assessing axillary disease burden in early breast cancer cases.

Amid the rise of machine learning models, a substantial portion of plant growth models remains mechanistic, seeking to capture an in-depth understanding of the underlying phenomena governing the system's dynamics. The development of these models typically involves parameter estimation from experimental data. Ensuring that the estimated parameters align closely with their respective "true" values is crucial since they hold biological interpretation, leading to the challenge of uniqueness in the solutions.

Hydrolyzable tannins (HTs) deriving from chestnuts have demonstrated, through numerous studies, the ability to exert multiple beneficial effects, including antioxidant and antimicrobial effects, on the lipid metabolism and cancer cells. The latter effect is very fascinating, since different polyphenols deriving from chestnuts were able to synergistically induce the inhibition of cancerous cells through multiple pathways. Moreover, the main mechanisms by which tannins induce antioxidant functions include: the reduction in oxidative stress, the ability to scavenge free radicals, and the modulation of specific enzymes, such as superoxide dismutase.

This work aimed to assess the variability of casein genes in a population of 153 bucks and 825 lactating does of the Sarda breed, and to perform association analysis between polymorphic sites and milk yield and composition traits. To genotype the casein genes, we chose an SNP panel including 44 SNPs mapping to the four casein genes , , and . Genotyping (made by KASP™ genotyping assay, based on competitive allele-specific PCR) revealed the high variability of the Sarda goat, and haplotype analysis revealed linkage disequilibrium (LD) between and genes, in addition to two LD blocks within the and two LD blocks within the gene, in bucks and does.

In the world, migraine is one of the most common causes of disability in adults. To date, there is no a single cause for this disorder, but rather a set of physio-pathogenic triggers in combination with a genetic predisposition. Among the factors related to migraine onset, a crucial role seems to be played by gut dysbiosis.

Saliva is a very complex fluid and it is essential to maintain several physiological processes and functions, including oral health, taste, digestion and immunological defenses. Saliva composition and the oral microbiome can be influenced by several factors, like diet and smoking habits, and their alteration can represent an important access point for pathogens and, thus, for systemic illness onset. In this review, we explore the potentiality of saliva as a new tool for the early detection of some pathological conditions, such as oral diseases, chronic degenerative non-communicable diseases, among these chronic kidney disease (CKD).
