Aim: Self-sampling human papillomavirus (HPV) testing has been introduced for cervical cancer screening worldwide. In Japan, there are two types (brush and sponge) of HPV self-sampling devices. However, the recommended type for cervical cancer screening remains unclear.

In Japan, government support for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination began in November 2010. However, the mass media repeatedly reported on severe adverse events. The Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare suspended proactive recommendations for HPV vaccines in June 2013.

Article Synopsis
  • Liquid-based cytology has become more prevalent in cervical cancer screening in Japan, rising from 8% in FY2011 to 37% in FY2014, indicating a shift in practice.
  • The study found that liquid-based cytology significantly outperformed conventional cytology in detecting lower-grade lesions, with higher detection rates for CIN1+ and CIN2+, while showing no major difference for CIN3+ and cancer cases.
  • Liquid-based cytology also resulted in a significantly lower rate of unsatisfactory specimens compared to conventional cytology, suggesting it may be a better option for cervical cancer screening.

The Japanese national immunization programme for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) started in 2010. Vaccination rates increased up to 70% in women in the 1996-1999 birth. However, the proactive recommendation for HPV vaccine was suspended in 2013, following repeated media reports of adverse events.

Prevention of cervical cancer has been unsuccessful in Japan because of low rates of cancer screening and vaccination. The Vaccine Adverse Review Committee of the Japanese Government investigated 2,475 adverse events and reported 617 (6.9/100,000) severe cases and 176 (2.

Purpose: Postoperative chylous ascites is an unusual complication following retroperitoneal surgery. A search of the English literature showed only 44 cases of chylous ascites following gynecological cancer surgery. The treatment is primarily conservative, but surgical treatment is considered in resistant cases.

Article Synopsis
  • * Researchers surveyed 10 outpatient subjects, aged 66 to 85, using questionnaires and oral examinations over 6 months to assess oral hygiene practices and awareness.
  • * Results indicated that, despite oral care instructions, there was no significant improvement in patients' oral hygiene, highlighting the need for caregiver involvement and early dental interventions for better management.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to ascertain the current statuses and problems of dental home care patients by surveying the oral care status and needs of patients in the home medical care support ward at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology. Patients that required continuous oral management even after discharge from the hospital were referred to local dental clinics to receive home dental care. We investigated the suitability and problems associated with such care, and identified the dental care needs of home patients and the status of local care coordination, including those in hospitals.

Objectives: Current diagnostic imaging modalities for resin-based composites (RBC) do not possess sufficient resolution and cross-sectional tomographic imaging to detect defects of RBC restorations in real-time. The purpose of this in vivo study was to investigate swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) as a new tool to evaluate defects of RBC restorations.

Methods: We evaluated for the failure of RBC restorations in 52 patients (11 male, 41 female) at the Division of Oral and Dental Surgery, National Centre for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Japan.

Article Synopsis
  • - The porosity of denture base resins can cause fractures and harbor pathogens, making it a significant issue for denture wearers.
  • - This study utilized a new advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanner to create the first images of finished dentures, focusing on ten newly fabricated full dentures from a Japanese geriatric center.
  • - The OCT system effectively revealed internal structures of the dentures that are not visible to the naked eye, indicating its potential for nondestructive inspection and defect detection in denture materials.

Article Synopsis
  • A laboratory study was conducted to evaluate swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) as a diagnostic tool for detecting occlusal caries in extracted teeth.
  • The study involved visual inspections of 111 occlusal fissures and subsequent SS-OCT analyses, with the results compared against direct observations from confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM).
  • SS-OCT demonstrated high sensitivity for detecting enamel demineralization (0.98), superior to conventional visual inspection, and provided better diagnostic accuracy for both enamel (0.86) and dentine caries (0.80) compared to visual methods.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how continuous oral care impacts the nutritional status of nursing home residents in Japan over one year, involving 53 participants divided into intervention and control groups.
  • The intervention group received professional oral care from a dentist three times a week, while the control group did not receive this care.
  • Results showed that the oral care group maintained their nutritional indicators (body weight, BMI, serum albumin, HDL-C), whereas the control group experienced significant declines, highlighting the importance of oral care in preserving the nutritional health of older adults.

Objective: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as a high-resolution noninvasive clinical imaging application. The purpose of this study was to show OCT images of human labial glands obtained using a swept-source (SS) OCT system.

Study Design: Labial gland OCT imaging was carried out using our new SS-OCT system for 5 healthy volunteers using a hand-held in vivo OCT scanning probe.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new method of biomedical imaging that can generate high-resolution, cross-sectional images of microstructures. The purpose of this study was to present the first OCT images of oral vascular anomalies using a new advanced OCT scanner that we have developed, and to discuss the application of our system for oral soft tissues. Knowledge of the size and area of the vascular structures can be useful for the diagnosis and choice of the best treatment.

Recently, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare proposed that cervical cancer screening should be conducted for women aged 20 to 29 years old in Japan. However, there are insufficient data available in Japan concerning the screening conducted for women under the age of 30. Therefore, we made a survey of the results of cervical cytologic examination for pregnant women.

To investigate the cell kinetics of human endometrial disorders immunolocation of PCNA (proliferating cell nuclear antigen) was performed in 69 specimens of normal, hyperplastic, or malignant endometrial tissue that had been fixed in formalin and embedded in paraffin. Immunoreactivity of PCNA was observed in all specimens examined. In the proliferative phase, PCNA positive cells were present in both the glands and stroma.
