Background: Self-administered questionnaires about physical activity are useful for collecting data to develop public health policies. There is currently no validated physical activity questionnaire, however, for Japanese children and adolescents. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of self-administered, physical activity questionnaires for Japanese students.

We examined the way in which the duration of rhythmic muscle compressions affects cardiovascular responses and muscle oxygenation at rest and during dynamic exercise. We measured the mean arterial pressure (MAP), heart rate (HR) and oxygenation of the vastus lateralis muscle (by near-infrared spectroscopy) in eight healthy male subjects at rest and during supine bicycle exercise (50 and 100 W at 60 r.p.

Our previous studies showed that preganglionic adrenal (pre-ASNA), renal (RSNA), lumbar, and postganglionic adrenal sympathetic nerve activities (post-ASNA) are inhibited after stimulation of arterial baroreceptors, nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS), and glutamatergic and P2x receptors and are activated after stimulation of adenosine A1 receptors. However, stimulation of adenosine A2a receptors inhibited RSNA and post-ASNA, whereas it activated pre-ASNA. Because the effects evoked by NTS A2a receptors may be mediated via activation of nitric oxide (NO) mechanisms in NTS neurons, we tested the hypothesis that NO synthase (NOS) inhibitors would attenuate regional sympathetic responses to NTS A2a receptor stimulation, whereas NO donors would evoke contrasting responses from pre-ASNA versus RSNA and post-ASNA.

We assessed the hypothesis that chronic estrogen replacement in ovariectomized rats has the beneficial effect of suppressing stress-induced cardiovascular responses through endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS). We employed a radiotelemetry system to measure blood pressure and heart rate (HR). Female Wistar rats aged 11 wk were ovariectomized and implanted with radiotelemetry devices.
