Canine mammary tumours (CMTs) are one of the most common malignancies in bitches. Platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR) α and β, vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 (VEGFR-2) and CD117 are tyrosine kinase receptors involved in several tumours and represent suitable targets for specific therapy with toceranib phosphate. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the expression of these receptors in the pathogenesis and progression of CMTs.

Malignant tumors during pregnancy are rarely seen by otolaryngologists, and they cause various problems which require special treatment with careful consideration of both the mother and fetus. Cases of tongue carcinoma resection and reconstruction with a microsurgical free flap during pregnancy have not previously been reported in Japan. We report herein on a case, in which the mother and her child made satisfactory progress after surgery.

Conclusions: CD44 expression in hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) is closely associated with poor prognosis for patients. CD44 may serve as a prognostic marker for hypopharyngeal SCCs.

Objectives: CD44, an adhesion molecule binding to extracellular matrix, is believed to participate in the progression of malignancies.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the effectiveness of contact endoscopy (CE) in diagnosing oral and lingual diseases by comparing CE findings to later pathological diagnoses.
  • During a five-year period, CE examined 66 patients, focusing on specific characteristics of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and leukoplakia, resulting in a high overall diagnostic rate of 93.9%.
  • The findings indicated that CE is a valuable real-time diagnostic tool, providing accurate results before pathological confirmation, particularly for SCC with a sensitivity of 91.3% and perfect specificity.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluated the Provox2 voice prosthesis's effectiveness in helping patients restore speech after total laryngectomy, using data from 32 patients between 2000 and 2004.
  • A high speech restoration rate of 90.6% was achieved with the prosthesis, and the average maximum phonation time (MPT) was 15.1 seconds, unaffected by factors like age or surgery type.
  • Results indicated that the Provox2 not only provided better speech outcomes compared to other methods but also had varying lifetimes based on patient type, affirming its utility in voice rehabilitation.

Objective: Because of the low incidence of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in Japan, few studies have reported on the use of concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CCRT) for treatment of this disease. The present study investigated the efficacy and toxicity of CCRT with Carboplatin (CBDCA) and UFT for NPC.

Patients And Methods: CCRT with injection of CBDCA and oral administration of UFT was given to 21 patients in our institution during 1996-2000.
