A novel SOX10 nonsense mutation in a patient with Kallmann syndrome and Waardenburg syndrome.

Summary: The underlying genetic drivers of Kallmann syndrome, a rare genetic disorder characterized by anosmia and hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to impairment in the development of olfactory axons and in the migration of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH)-producing neurons during embryonic development, remain largely unknown. SOX10, a key transcription factor involved in the development of neural crest cells and established as one of the causative genes of Waardenburg syndrome, has been shown to be a causative gene of Kallmann syndrome. A 17-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with Waardenburg syndrome on the basis of a hearing impairment and hypopigmented iris at childhood, was referred to our department because of anosmia and delayed puberty.

Pegylated interferon-α2b and ribavirin combination therapy induces Hashitoxicosis followed by type 1 diabetes mellitus.

The combination of pegylated interferon-α2b (PEG-IFNα) and ribavirin (RBV) is a standard treatment for chronic hepatitis C. The case of a patient with chronic hepatitis C who developed Hashitoxicosis followed by type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) with PEG-IFNα plus RBV combination therapy, but not IFNα alone, is presented.

Leptin inhibits and ghrelin augments hypothalamic noradrenaline release after stress.

Metabolic conditions affect hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal responses to stressful stimuli. Here we examined effects of food deprivation, leptin and ghrelin upon noradrenaline release in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) and plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) concentrations after stressful stimuli. Food deprivation augmented both noradrenaline release in the PVN and the increase in plasma ACTH concentration following electrical footshocks (FSs).

Neuromedin U facilitates oxytocin release from the pituitary via beta adrenoceptors.

Neuromedin U activates noradrenergic neurones in the medulla oblongata and oxytocin neurones in the hypothalamus. Here we examined roles of noradrenergic transmission in oxytocin release from the pituitary after intracerebroventricular administration of neuromedin U in rats. Neuromedin U administration facilitated noradrenaline release in the supraoptic nucleus.
