Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is a rare and aggressive thyroid malignancy typically comprised of undifferentiated tumor cells with various histologic morphologies, which makes the diagnosis challenging. These tumors commonly show loss of thyroglobulin and TTF1 with preservation of cytokeratin (67%) and Paired Box Gene 8 (PAX8) (55%) expression. Identification of a sensitive immunohistochemical stain to aid in the diagnosis of ATC would be beneficial.

Towards the nicotine addiction challenge in the smoking of hookah pipe products, we hereby present the development of an electrochemical sensor for nicotine detection. A nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheet (N-CNS)/poly(amidoamine) dendrimer (PAMAM) nanocomposite-modified electrode was prepared as a sensor for the detection of nicotine in analytical and real samples. The N-CNSs were prepared by a hydrothermal method and dropcast on a glassy carbon electrode followed by electro-deposition of the PAMAM dendrimer to form the sensor (GCE/N-CNSs/PAMAM).

The potential for more than one distinct hematolymphoid neoplasm to arise from a common mutated stem or precursor cell has been proposed based on findings in primary human malignancies. Particularly, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma (AITL), which shares a somatic mutation profile in common with other hematopoietic malignancies, has been reported to occur alongside myeloid neoplasms or clonal B-cell proliferations, with identical mutations occurring in more than one cell lineage. Here we report such a case of an elderly woman who was diagnosed over a period of 8 years with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, polycythemia vera, and AITL, each harboring identical somatic mutations in multiple genes.

Molecular diagnostics for lung cancer is a well-established standard of care, but how to use the available diagnostic tools for optimal and cost-effective patient care remains unresolved. Here, we show that DNA-only, small gene next-generation sequencing (sNGS) panels (<50 genes) combined with ultra-rapid reflex testing for common fusion transcripts using the Idylla Genefusion assay provide a cost-effective and sufficiently comprehensive testing modality for the majority of lung cancer cases. We also demonstrate the need for additional reflex testing capability on larger DNA and fusion panels for a small subset of lung cancers bearing rare single-nucleotide variants, indels and fusion transcripts and secondary, post-treatment resistance mutations.

Electrodeposited bismuth ferrite (BiFeO) thin films on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate were employed as photoanodes in the photoelectrocatalytic degradation of methylene blue. The BiFeO thin films electrodeposited for 300 s, 600 s, 1200 s, 1800 s and 3600 s were characterised with XRD, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. SEM images displayed different morphology at different electrodeposition times which affects the photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) performances.

Dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine, an artemisinin-based combination therapy, has been identified as a promising agent for intermittent preventive treatment of malaria in pregnancy. However, in pregnant women living with HIV (PLWH), efavirenz-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) significantly reduces the plasma exposure of piperaquine. In an open-label, nonrandomized, fixed-sequence, pharmacokinetic study, we compared piperaquine plasma concentrations in 13 pregnant women during a 3-day treatment course of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine when coadministered with efavirenz-based versus dolutegravir-based ART in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

Liquid biopsy is considered an alternative to standard next-generation sequencing (NGS) of solid tumor samples when biopsy tissue is inadequate for testing or when testing of a peripheral blood sample is preferred. Tetraspanin CD63 is a cluster of cell surface proteins with four transmembrane domains; it is associated with tetraspanin-enriched microdomains and typically localizes to late endosomes and lysosomes. CD63 plays an important role in the cellular trafficking of different proteins, EV cargo sorting, and vesicle formation.
