Biotics are increasingly being used in the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of a mixture of microencapsulated sodium butyrate, probiotics ( DSM 26357, DSM 32418, DSM 32946, DSM 32403, and DSM 32269), and short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOSs) in IBS patients. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial involving 120 adult participants with IBS.

Yet, treatment strategies are still limited, in part due to the multifactorial nature of the disease and the complex interplay between genetic, environmental, dietary, immune, and gut microbial factors in its etiology. With their direct and indirect anti-inflammatory properties, human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) are a promising treatment and management strategy for IBD.

Here, we hypothesize that early life stress is more prevalent in FAP-NOS compared to healthy controls and that fecal microbial profiles and related metabolites differ between groups. In an international multicenter case-control study, FAP-NOS patients ( = 40) were compared to healthy controls ( = 55).

The cross-generational effects of early life stress have been modeled in mice and demonstrated to be associated with epigenetic factors in the germline. While stress is known to affect gut microbial features, whether its effects can persist across life and be passed to the progeny is not well defined.

Emerging evidence has revealed the presence of the glutamate decarboxylase (GAD)-encoding gene, a key enzyme to produce GABA, in the prominent human intestinal genus . Here, we investigated GABA production by in culture and metabolic assays combined with comparative genomics and phylogenetics.

Sii predominate in spontaneously fermented milk products with unknown public health effects.

However, Sii belongs to the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC).

Streptococcus infantarius subsp. infantarius (Sii), a member of the Streptococcus bovis/Streptococcus equinus complex (SBSEC), predominates as dairy-adapted and non-adapted variants in fermented dairy products (FDP) in East and West Africa. Epidemiologic data suggest an association with colorectal cancer for most SBSEC members, including Sii from Kenyan patients.
