Parental expectations and perceptions of augmentative and alternative communication: A Sri Lankan perspective.

Everybody has a right to communicate in any way they can, which includes augmentative and alternative communication. The uptake of augmentative and alternative communication in everyday life may be influenced by awareness, perceptions and acceptance of augmentative and alternative communication by caregivers, family members and the wider society. This study aimed to uncover what parents thought about augmentative and alternative communication in a Global South context.

Comparative Outcomes of Transcatheter Versus Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement in Elderly Patients With Severe Symptomatic Aortic Stenosis: A Systematic Review.

Objectives: Aortic stenosis is the most common valvular heart disease globally; while transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) has proven to be a competitive alternative to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) and revolutionized treatment, its safety and efficacy has yet to be comprehensively assessed against SAVR for certain subsets of aortic stenosis patients; therefore, this study aims to systematically analyze all the available clinical evidence from randomized clinical trials on TAVR versus SAVR among intermediate and low-risk patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis.

Methodology: We performed a systematic review of the randomized controlled trials (RCT), studies comparing TAVR and SAVR in low- and intermediate-risk patients were identified by a comprehensive search of the major databases. Mortality, stroke, length of stay, and other perioperative outcomes were assessed.

Chiroptical properties of cyanine aggregates: hierarchical modelling from monomers to bundles.

Some achiral cyanine dyes form well-ordered chiral assemblies exhibiting pronounced Circular Dichroism (CD) and Circularly Polarized Luminescence (CPL). Notably, achiral C8O3 cyanines self-assemble into tubular J-aggregates, which further organize into bundles displaying bisignate CD spectrum - hallmark of an exciton coupled system - and an unusual bisignated CPL. In contrast, the tubular aggregates display a monosignate CD spectrum.

Assessment of Pain Management After Orthognathic Surgery by the Administration of Montelukast: An Original Research.

Introduction: Opioid may cause undue risk after surgical procedures like orthognathic surgeries. The present study was aimed to determine how the preoperative administration of oral montelukast affected the degree of postoperative discomfort following bimaxillary orthognathic surgery (BOS).

Methodology: This study included all skeletal class III subjects scheduled for BOS.

The goal of this study is to find a cure for the masticatory muscle disease known as hemimasticatory spasm (HMS). This retrospective investigation intends to find a more efficient therapeutic approach for HMS patients by examining the clinical effectiveness of masseteric nerve avulsion performed on HMS using a temporomandibular arthroscope. A clinical study was piloted where the subjects were treated for masseter nerve avulsion by TMJ arthroscopy.

Strong Coupling of Chiral Frenkel Exciton for Intense, Bisignate Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

We show that chiral Frenkel excitons yield intense circularly polarized luminescence with an intrinsic dissymmetry factor in emission g as high as 0.08. This outstanding value is measured through thin films of cyanine J-aggregates that form twisted bundles.

Clinical features and antibiotic treatment of early-onset neonatal listeriosis.

Objective: To analyze the clinical features, efficacy of antibiotic treatment, and outcome of neonatal listeriosis.

Methods: This was a retrospective study that included all neonates diagnosed with listeriosis between January 2010 and December 2021.

Results: Nine male patients and five female patients were analyzed, including 11 preterm and 3 term infants.

An aminonaphthalene-based colorimetric and fluorescent sensor for selective recognition of Fe in water.

This paper describes the synthesis of poly(1-aminonaphthalene) and its application as a chemosensor for detection of Fe using the naked eye and a fluorimetric method. The conjugated polymer was synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization using FeCl as a catalyst. The response of the polymer towards various metal ions was investigated using colorimetric detection, and ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectroscopies.

Low cost, high sensitivity detection of waterborne Al cations and F anions via the fluorescence response of a morin derivative dye.

Morin dye is known as a cheap and readily available selective 'off → on' fluorescent sensitiser when immobilised in a phase transfer membrane for the detection of Al ions. Here, a morin derivative, NaMSA, which readily dissolves in water with good long-term stability is used in conjunction with a fibre optic transducer with lock-in detection to detect Al in drinking water below the potability limit. The combination of a water soluble dye and the fibre optic transducer require neither membrane preparation nor a fluorescence spectrometer yet still display a high figure-of- merit.

Effect of Room Temperature Ionic Liquid on the Formation of the Complex Oxalate-Sodium Morin-5-Sulfonate-Aluminium(III): Application to the Fluorescence Determination of Oxalate Ion.

The effect of room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) on the formation of the fluorescence ternary complex oxalate-sodium morin-5-sulfonate (NaMSA)-Aluminium(III) has been studied. In weakly acidic medium and in the presence of RTIL, 1-Butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIM-PF6), total complex formation is achieved as compared with the formation of the binary complex of NaMSA-Aluminium(III). The fluorescence characteristics of the system allowed the establishment of a very sensitive method for the spectrofluorimetric determination of oxalate ion.

[Prevalence of height-weight deficit in Tunisian boys of the Northern and Southern regions].

Background: Malnutrition is owing to an alimentation regarding quantity and quality food. aim: To examine the different forms of malnutrition among Tunisian boys of the north and south regions, to form an idea about the state of their health and their living conditions.

Methods: Our empirical investigation was carried out on 1082 northern boys and 1016 southern boys, aged from 10 to 14 years including 1057 non pubescent boys and 1041 prepubescent boys.

Advancement in electrospun nanofibrous membranes modification and their application in water treatment.

Water, among the most valuable natural resources available on earth, is under serious threat as a result of undesirable human activities: for example, marine dumping, atmospheric deposition, domestic, industrial and agricultural practices. Optimizing current methodologies and developing new and effective techniques to remove contaminants from water is the current focus of interest, in order to renew the available water resources. Materials like nanoparticles, polymers, and simple organic compounds, inorganic clay materials in the form of thin film, membrane or powder have been employed for water treatment.

Impact of UNCRPD on the status of persons with disabilities.

The sanctity of human life is a fundamental human value and the medical profession has been ethically charged with respecting and enhancing the value of all human beings' lives. However, disability-selective abortion has been perceived as an acceptable health intervention to eliminate disabilities, and is provided for in law as well as in policies and healthcare programmes related to disability. Advanced medical technologies are being utilised not to maximise the lives of persons with disabilities but to prevent the birth of disabled people by medically terminating foetuses diagnosed with disability.

Investigation of medication prescribing errors in Wad Medani, Gezira, Sudan.

This is Sudan's first cross sectional exploratory study aimed to analyze the appropriateness of prescriptions written in different health settings in Wad Medani, Sudan. Two pretested questionnaires were used to collect information about the possible causes of medication errors from randomly selected practicing physicians and pharmacists. The sample consisted of 2000 prescriptions collected in the period of August and September 2009.

T regulatory cells, the evolution of targeted immunotherapy.

T regulatory cells are able to suppress anti-tumour immunity in pre-clinical models and in patients. This review highlights the important discoveries in Treg immunology critical to the evolution of targeted immunotherapy. We also describe the therapeutic applications that are currently being assessed and their future potential.

Gemcitabine and lenalidomide combination in a patient with metastatic pancreatic cancer: a case study.

The proportion of people surviving pancreatic cancer is extremely low, with just 10% of patients diagnosed with any stage of the disease living beyond 1 year and a 5-year relative survival rate of <5%. The lack of effective therapy is one the main reason for such a bleak outlook. Herein, we report on a patient with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and metastatic disease treated with a combination regimen of gemcitabine and lenalidomide, without major complications.

T-regulatory cell modulation: the future of cancer immunotherapy?

T-regulatory cells suppress anti-tumour immunity in cancer patients and in murine tumour models. Furthermore, their activity is likely to have an effect on the effectiveness of immunotherapeutic treatments for cancer. Here we describe the current status of developing clinical strategies for modulating Treg activity in cancer patients.

The title compound, C(14)H(16)N(2)O(3), belongs to a group of esters of 2-oxo- and 1,2,3,4-tetra-hydro-pyrimidine-5-carboxylic acids, which exhibit a wide spectrum of biological activities. The dihydro-pyrimidine ring adopts a screw-boat conformation. The crystal packing is stabilized by strong N-H⋯O and weak C-H⋯O inter-molecular hydrogen bonds.
