Excessive alcohol use damages the brain, especially corticolimbic regions such as the hippocampus and rhinal cortices, leading to learning and memory problems. While neuroimmune reactivity is hypothesized to underly alcohol-induced damage, direct evidence of the causative role of microglia, brain-resident immune cells, in this process is lacking. Here, we depleted microglia using PLX5622 (PLX), a CSF1R inhibitor commonly used in mice, but rarely in rats, and assessed cell death following binge-like alcohol exposure in male rats.

Background: Alcohol use in adolescence may increase susceptibility to substance use disorders (SUDs) in adulthood. This study determined if voluntary ethanol (EtOH) consumption during adolescence, combined with social isolation, alters the trajectory of EtOH and nicotine intake during adulthood, as well as activating brain neuroinflammation.

Methods: Adolescent male isolate- and group-housed rats were given 0.

Social care practitioners are often under-represented in research activity and output. Evidence-based practice enables social care practitioners to develop/engage the skills to evaluate evidence and be more actively involved in research. REalist Synthesis Of non-pharmacologicaL interVEntions for antipsychotic-induced weight gain (RESOLVE) is a NIHR-funded study where realist synthesis is used to understand and explain how, why, for whom, and in what contexts non-pharmacological interventions help service users, with severe mental illness, to manage antipsychotic-induced weight gain.

While population-based research confirms that women with disabilities abused by their intimate partners experience significant mental health issues, few studies compare this in intimate partner violence (IPV)-specific samples of women with or without disabilities and none analyze possible impacts based on disability type. This secondary mixed methods analysis examined 660 Canadian women (50.6% Indigenous, 43.

The coacervation and complexation of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes are dependent on numerous environmental and preparatory factors, but temperature is often overlooked. Temperature effects remain unclear because the temperature dependence of both the dielectric constant and polymer-solvent interaction parameter can yield lower and/or upper critical solution phase behaviors for PECs. Further, secondary interactions, such as hydrogen bonding, can affect the temperature response of a PEC.

Purpose: Although most anesthetic drugs are classified as compatible with breastfeeding, literature shows that anesthesia providers routinely advise patients to discard milk when receiving all types of anesthesia. The purpose of this project was to determine if a multimodal educational module and cognitive aid improved student registered nurse anesthetists' knowledge and confidence to counsel lactating patients on current anesthesia-related recommendations.

Design: This project used a pre-experimental one-group, pretest and post-test design.

The rates of alcohol use disorder among women are growing, yet little is known about how the female brain is affected by alcohol. The neuroimmune system, and specifically microglia, have been implicated in mediating alcohol neurotoxicity, but most preclinical studies have focused on males. Further, few studies have considered changes to the microglial phenotype when examining the effects of ethanol on brain structure and function.

Purpose: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive and lethal form of lung cancer and the overall 5-year survival (OS) for patients is a dismal 7%. Radiation therapy (RT) provides some benefit for selected patients with SCLC but could be improved with radiosensitizing agents. In this study, we identified novel radiosensitizers for SCLC by a CRISPR-Cas9 screen and evaluated the efficacy of ATM inhibitor AZD1390 as a radiosensitizer of SCLC.

Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) are well studied for their annual long-distance migration from as far north as Canada to their overwintering grounds in Central Mexico. At the end of the cold season, monarchs start to repopulate North America through short-distance migration over the course of multiple generations. Interestingly, some populations in various tropical and subtropical islands do not migrate and exhibit heritable differences in wing shape and size, most likely an adaptation to island life.

During adolescence, the brain is highly susceptible to alcohol-induced damage and subsequent neuroimmune responses, effects which may enhance development of an alcohol use disorder (AUD). Neuroimmune reactions are implicated in adolescent alcohol exposure escalating adulthood drinking. Therefore, we investigated whether intermittent alcohol exposure in male, adolescent rats (AIE) escalated adult drinking via two-bottle choice (2BC).

Article Synopsis
  • Aging increases inflammation in the immune system (termed "inflammaging"), leading to better inflammation but less effective infection responses, with notable sex differences in these processes.
  • Studies on aged male and female rats show that males experience more cognitive impairments and heightened neuroinflammation after immune challenges, unlike females.
  • Research indicates that aging-related changes in immune cells in the brain differ by sex, highlighting the need to consider sex in developing therapies for aging and cognitive decline.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer with BRCA1/2 mutations often recurs and resists treatments like PARP inhibitors, leading to a search for new targeted therapies.
  • Researchers found that losing RNF8 can protect against breast tumors in Brca1-mutant mice, while in human cancer cells, RNF8 deficiency increases DNA damage and leads to cancer cell death through R-loop accumulation.
  • The study reveals that RNF8 interacts with XRN2 to resolve R-loops, and its absence disrupts this process, causing genomic instability and highlighting a synthetic lethal relationship between RNF8 and BRCA1.

Recent evidence suggests that alcohol use disorder (AUD) may manifest itself differently in women compared to men. Women experience AUDs on an accelerated timeline and may have certain regional vulnerabilities. In male rats, neuronal cell death and astrocyte reactivity are noted following induction of alcohol dependence in an animal model of an AUD.

Binge-like ethanol exposure during adolescence has been shown to produce long lasting effects in animal models including anxiety-like behavior that can last into young adulthood and impairments in cognition that can last throughout most of the lifespan. However, little research has investigated if binge-like ethanol exposure during adolescence produces persistent anxiety-like behavior and concomitantly impairs cognition late in life. Furthermore, few studies have investigated such behavioral effects in both female and male rats over the lifespan.

Limited evidence exists on the impact of spatial and temporal heterogeneity of high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) on tumor evolution, clinical outcomes, and surgical operability. We perform systematic multi-site tumor mapping at presentation and matched relapse from 49 high-tumor-burden patients, operated up front. From SNP array-derived copy-number data, we categorize dendrograms representing tumor clonal evolution as sympodial or dichotomous, noting most chemo-resistant patients favor simpler sympodial evolution.
