Background: Several studies have shown that aortic valve calcium (AVC) is associated with cardiovascular events. Furthermore, the extent of AVC is associated with adverse prognosis even in patients without significant aortic stenosis. We investigated the relationship between AVC and left ventricular (LV) diastolic parameters determined by gated single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with no evidence of ischaemic heart disease.

Background: Despite recent advances in immunosuppressive therapy for patients with primary nephrotic syndrome, its effectiveness and safety have not been fully studied in recent nationwide real-world clinical data in Japan.

Methods: A 5-year cohort study, the Japan Nephrotic Syndrome Cohort Study, enrolled 374 patients with primary nephrotic syndrome in 55 hospitals in Japan, including 155, 148, 38, and 33 patients with minimal change disease (MCD), membranous nephropathy (MN), focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS), and other glomerulonephritides, respectively. The incidence rates of remission and relapse of proteinuria, 50% and 100% increases in serum creatinine, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), all-cause mortality, and other major adverse outcomes were compared among glomerulonephritides using the Log-rank test.

Association between anemia and renal prognosis in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease: a retrospective study.

Background: Though anemia is a sign of poor renal prognosis in chronic kidney disease (CKD), hemoglobin (Hb) levels are typically higher in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) than in other kidney diseases, and anemia has not been examined as a potential prognosticator. Thus, we investigated anemia as a factor for renal prognosis in ADPKD.

Methods: In total, 115 non-dialysis patients, 48 men and 67 women, with ADPKD were evaluated.

Background: Hemodialysis patients are prone to constipation, which can adversely affect their quality of life (QOL). Elobixibat, a highly selective inhibitor of the ileal bile acid transporter, can increase the bile acid level in the colon and, subsequently, enhance colonic motility and secretion. Different effects of rituximab on a native kidney and a post-transplant kidney with recurrence of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

We present the case of a 29-year-old woman with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) who was treated with rituximab administration under different conditions for refractory nephrotic syndrome and posttransplant FSGS recurrence. At the age of 13 years, she developed FSGS, which followed a refractory clinical course, and eventually necessitated her to undergo plasmapheresis and receive rituximab at the age of 25 years. However, both therapies were ineffective, and she subsequently had progressive renal failure, for which dialysis was initiated at the age of 26 years.

Background: In a typical hemodialysis (HD) session, excessive water removal sometimes induces peripheral circulatory failure and a rapid drop in blood pressure. Intermittent infusion hemodiafiltration (I-HDF), a new modality of dialysis therapy, has been developed to improve peripheral circulation by repeated intermittent infusion of dialysate during an HD session. Rat Mesenchymal Stromal Cell Sheets Suppress Renal Fibrosis via Microvascular Protection.

Renal fibrosis is one of the largest global health care problems, and microvascular (MV) injury is important in the development of progressive fibrosis. Although conventional cell therapy suppresses kidney injury via the role of vasoprotective cytokines, the effects are limited due to low retention of administered cells. We recently described that transplantation of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF)-transgenic mesothelial cell sheets showed a remarkable cell survival and strong therapeutic effects in a rat renal fibrosis model.

Sertraline Reduces Albuminuria by Interfering with Caveolae-Mediated Endocytosis through Glomerular Endothelial and Epithelial Cells.

Introduction: Previously, we reported the caveolae-mediated intracellular trafficking pathway of albumin through glomerular endothelial cells (GEnCs) as a new etiological hypothesis of urinary albumin excretion. The selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, sertraline (Ser), inhibits dynamin, which plays a pivotal role in the fission of caveolae from the cell membrane during caveolae endocytosis.
