Quinolines are a predominant class of nitrogen containing heterocycles with wide applications in the medical and industrial fields. Owing to their significant importance, numerous synthetic protocols have emerged in the past two centuries. Metal-free synthesis of quinolines has recently gained attention in view of toxic metal-free druggable quinoline synthesis.

The Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reaction offers an elegant strategy for the formation of 1,3-diynes via Cu-catalyzed cross-coupling of alkynyl halides with terminal alkynes in the presence of an amine. Since both unsymmetrical and symmetrical diacetylenes are of considerable interest due to their pharmaceutical, biological and synthetic applications, novel developments in the field of the Cadiot-Chodkiewicz reaction are of great importance. C(sp)-C(sp) coupling plays a central role in the total synthesis of many natural products and polyynes.

Bis(indolyl)methane appended biaryls were designed, synthesized and evaluated in human cervical cancer cell lines (HeLa) for their anticancer activities and compared against normal rat cardiac myoblasts (H9C2) cells. Compounds 1-12 were synthesized, with variations in one of the phenyl unit, in a single step by condensation of biaryl-2-carbaldehydes with indole in the presence of para-toluenesulfonic acid. Compound 1 exhibited a GI50 value of 11.
