Fungus-farming ants cultivate multiple lineages of fungi for food, but, because fungal cultivar relationships are largely unresolved, the history of fungus-ant coevolution remains poorly known. We designed probes targeting >2000 gene regions to generate a dated evolutionary tree for 475 fungi and combined it with a similarly generated tree for 276 ants. We found that fungus-ant agriculture originated ~66 million years ago when the end-of-Cretaceous asteroid impact temporarily interrupted photosynthesis, causing global mass extinctions but favoring the proliferation of fungi.

Background: Viral infections of the upper airways are the most common cause for absence from work or school, and there is evidence for probiotic efficacy in reducing the incidence and severity of these infections.

Objectives: We aimed to confirm the previously reported beneficial effects of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum HEAL9 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei 8700:2 against community-acquired common colds and identify a possible mechanism of action.

Methods: In a double-blind study, healthy adults (18-70 years of age) with at least 4 colds during the last 12 months before recruitment were randomly allocated to consume either probiotics (n = 448; total daily dose of 109 CFU with the 2 strains equally represented) or placebo (n = 450) once daily for 12 weeks.

Alpine habitats are one of the most vulnerable ecosystems to environmental change, however, little information is known about the drivers of plant-fungal interactions in these ecosystems and their resilience to climate change. We investigated the influence of the main drivers of ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungal communities along elevation and environmental gradients in the alpine zone of the European Alps and measured their degree of specialisation using network analysis. We studied the South American species of section based on morphological and molecular data. Members of this group can easily be identified in the field because the basidiomata are small and -like with a bulbous stipe and the universal veil in most species forms a distinct volva at the base of the stipe. The phylogenetic delimitation of the clade was mostly in concordance with the earlier, morphology-based grouping of the South American taxa except that was resolved outside of the clade.

An increase in confirmed human salmonellosis cases in the EU after 2014 triggered investigation of contributory factors and control options in poultry production. Reconsideration of the five current target serovars for breeding hens showed that there is justification for retaining  Enteritidis, S Typhimurium (including monophasic variants) and  Infantis, while Virchow and  Hadar could be replaced by  Kentucky and either Heidelberg,  Thompson or a variable serovar in national prevalence targets. However, a target that incorporates all serovars is expected to be more effective as the most relevant serovars in breeding flocks vary between Member State (MS) and over time.

We report the results of three consecutive External Quality Assessments (EQAs) for molecular subtyping of Salmonella to assess the performance of the European national public health reference laboratories (NPHRLs). The EQA included the molecular typing methods used for European enhanced surveillance of human Salmonella infections: pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE), including gel analysis by the use of the software BioNumerics, and 5-locus multiple locus variable number of tandem repeat analysis (MLVA) for serovar Typhimurium. The participation in the PFGE laboratory part was higher (27/35) than in the gel analysis (19/35) and MLVA (15/35), suggestive of the need for capacity building in methods requiring specialized equipment (MLVA) or software (gel analysis).
