Bacteroides intermedius is one of the periodontal disease generative bacteria. Lipopolysaccharide preparation obtained from B. intermedius ATCC 25611 and ATCC 33563 strains was investigated as to Limulus activity observed with Pyrodic (endotoxin specific) reagent, and mitogenic activity in both normal and tolerant mice induced by Escherichia coli.

The cause of the narrowing is thought to be the compression by pulmonary trunk (PT). Cardiac catheterization and coronary arteriography (CAG) were performed in 38 pts with ASD ranging in age from 15 to 62 years.

There were no difference in sex, age, infarct location and time from the onset to start of treatment between 135 patients with evolving acute myocardial infarction treated with PTCA (PTCA group) and 113 patients treated with PTCR alone (PTCR group). Fifty-nine patients in the PTCA group underwent PTCA following PTCR; the remaining 76 patients were without prior PTCR.

A study of the effects of 4-CB and 4'-OH-4-CB on the energy-linked functions of rat liver mitochondria was carried out. 4'-OH-4-CB was more effective than 4-CB in causing the inhibition of state 3 respiration of mitochondria with both succinate and glutamate/malate.

4-Chloro-4'-biphenylol (4'-OH-4-CB), a metabolite of 4-chlorobiphenyl (4-CB), stimulated state 4 respiration and released oligomycin-inhibited state 3 respiration of rat liver mitochondria with succinate as the respiratory substrate. When glutamate/malate and beta-hydroxybutyrate were used as the substrates, however, 4'-OH-4-CB was ineffective on these parameters. This indicates that 4'-OH-4-CB uncouples oxidative phosphorylation with succinate, but not with glutamate/malate and beta-hydroxybutyrate.

The effects of 2,5,2',5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (25TCB) on parameters related to the bioenergetic functions of isolated rat liver mitochondria were investigated. State 3 respiration was inhibited by 25TCB with both succinate and glutamate/malate as the respiratory substrates. The extent of inhibition with succinate was larger than that observed with glutamate/malate.

Manifestations included dementia, lack of volition, emotional lability, small-stepped gait, dysarthria, urinary incontinence, grasp reflex, pyramidal signs, paraplegia in flexion, and akinetic mutism. Pathologically, there was diffuse incomplete softening of white matter in all cases.

TCBs used in this study included 2,3,2',3'-, 2,4,2',4'-, 2,5,2',5'-, 2,6,2',6'-, and 3,4,3',4'-TCBs. The inhibitory actions of 2,3,2',3'-, 2,4,2',4'-, and 2,5,2',5'-TCBs on succinate oxidase were potent, while those caused by 2,6,2',6'- and 3,4,3',4'-TCBs were significantly weak.

Of these, six patients had neither good collaterals nor recanalization, and followed by mechanical failure due to rupture of the left ventricular free wall or interventricular septum in five patients despite antihypertensive therapy. In the remaining 48 patients with good collaterals or recanalization, mechanical failure was statistically infrequent and occurred in only two patients (p less than 0.

A comparative study of the effects of tetrachlorobiphenyls (TCBs) on the succinate-supported respirations of rat liver mitochondria was made, and some differences in effects caused by the different chlorine positions of the biphenyl rings were clarified. The inhibitory actions of 2,3,2',3'-,2,4,2',4'-, and 2,5,2',5'-TCBs on both state 3 and uncoupler-stimulated respirations were potent, while those induced by 2,6,2',6'-, and 3,4,3',4'-TCBs were weak. 2,3,2',3'-,2,4,2',4'-,2,5,2',5'-, and 2,6,2',6'-TCBs stimulated state 4 respiration, but 3,4,3',4'-TCB had very little effect on this respiration.

Eight cases of pellagra, diagnosed on the grounds of neuropathological findings and retrospective study of clinical data, were found among 106 necropsy cases of tuberculosis. Although these eight patients had shown various mental, neurological and gastrointestinal symptoms, as well as skin lesions, the diagnosis of pellagra had not been made clinically. In all the patients, pellagra symptoms appeared during isoniazid therapy.

ADP-stimulated respiration was much more sensitive to inhibition by DDT than was uncoupler-stimulated respiration when succinate or ascorbate/TMPD was used as the substrate. Ca2+ uptake driven by ATP hydrolysis was inhibited by DDT.

A comparative study of the effects of biphenyl and Kanechlor-400 (KC-400) on the respiratory and energy linked activities of rat liver mitochondria was made, and some differences in effects caused by the chlorination of biphenyl were clarified. The inhibition of state 3 respiration with succinate by biphenyl was less than that observed with alpha-ketoglutarate/malate. By contrast, KC-400 exhibited the opposite trend; state 3 respiration with succinate was more sensitive to inhibition than that observed with alpha-ketoglutarate/malate.
