Salacinol is a potent alpha-glucosidase inhibitor isolated from Salacia reticulata, and a good lead compound for an antidiabetic drug. It is essential to clarify the binding state of salacinol to alpha-glucosidase for efficient optimization study using structure-based drug design. Redocking simulations of two inhibitors, acarbose and casuarine whose complex structures are known, were performed to assure the appropriate docking pose prediction.

Ethanol production from biomass by repetitive solid-state fed-batch fermentation with continuous recovery of ethanol.

To save cost and input energy for bioethanol production, a consolidated continuous solid-state fermentation system composed of a rotating drum reactor, a humidifier, and a condenser was developed. Biomass, saccharifying enzymes, yeast, and a minimum amount of water are introduced into the system. Ethanol produced by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation is continuously recovered as vapor from the headspace of the reactor, while the humidifier compensates for the water loss.

Their structures were elucidated on the basis of chemical and physicochemical evidence. Among them, 3-5 were found to inhibit D-galactosamine-induced cytotoxicity in primary cultured mouse hepatocytes.

Oxygen uptake efficiency slope (OUES) and ventilatory efficiency (VE/VCO2 slope) are widely used as submaximal measurements of cardiopulmonary exercise testing as the evaluator or prognosticator of cardiac diseases. However, very few studies have compared the effects of submaximal exercise on these measurements. A total of 58 patients with coronary artery disease underwent maximal cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a treadmill.

Object: The goal of this study was to determine the long-term clinical significance of and the risk factors for intramedullary signal intensity change on MR images in patients with cervical compression myelopathy (CCM), an entity most commonly seen with cervical spondylotic myelopathy and ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL).

Single-step affinity purification of recombinant proteins using the silica-binding Si-tag as a fusion partner.

We previously reported that a silica-binding protein, designated Si-tag, can be used as a fusion tag to immobilize functional proteins on silica surfaces. In this study, by taking advantage of the strong affinity of Si-tag for silica, we developed a single-step purification method for Si-tagged fusion proteins. We utilized unmodified bare silica particles as a specific adsorbent and a high concentration of MgCl(2) solution as an elution buffer.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum: an algorithm for diagnosis and management.

Spontaneous pneumomediastinum (SPM) is a rare disorder most often affecting young males which is generally self-limiting. Despite the benign prognosis with few complications and little morbidity, it frequently confuses clinicians in primary settings, who may have difficulty differentiating SPM from other serious organ ruptures, especially oesophageal rupture (the so-called Boerhaave syndrome), which may lead to mediastinitis and may be fatal, even with appropriate interventions. An overview of adult SPM is provided, reviewing 17 studies (414 patients), including our clinical experience, and finally an algorithm for diagnosis and management of SPM is proposed, based on the characteristics of SPM.

Proteins on the cell wall of the bacterium affinity-purified using invertase as a ligand were identified to be heat shock proteins such as DnaK and GroEL and glycolytic enzymes such as pyruvate kinase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase. DnaK bound to both the bacterium and yeast at pH 4 and aggregated them at above 0.

Hepatoprotective amide constituents from the fruit of Piper chaba: Structural requirements, mode of action, and new amides.

The 80% aqueous acetone extract from the fruit of Piper chaba (Piperaceae) was found to have hepatoprotective effects on D-galactosamine (D-GalN)/lipopolysaccharide-induced liver injury in mice. From the ethyl acetate-soluble fraction, three new amides, piperchabamides E, G, and H, 33 amides, and four aromatic constituents were isolated. Among the isolates, several amide constituents inhibited D-GalN/tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha)-induced death of hepatocytes, and the following structural requirements were suggested: (i) the amide moiety is essential for potent activity; and (ii) the 1,9-decadiene structure between the benzene ring and the amide moiety tended to enhance the activity.

Amino acid substitution at position 464 in the haemagglutinin-neuraminidase protein of a mumps virus Urabe strain enhanced the virus growth in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells.

Mumps virus (MuV) infects various organs including central nervous system (CNS). However, the molecular basis of the neural cell specificity of MuV is not well understood. We found that the Hoshino vaccine strain rescued from cDNA replicated moderately in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cell line, while an Urabe strain (Ur89-250) isolated from a post-vaccination aseptic meningitis case replicated efficiently in the same cells.

Characteristic features of injuries due to shark attacks: a review of 12 cases.

Shark attacks on humans might not occur as often as is believed and the characteristic features of shark injuries on corpses have not been extensively reviewed. We describe the characteristic features of shark injuries on 12 corpses. The analysis of these injuries might reveal the motivation behind the attacks and/or the shark species involved in the attack.

Symptomatic osteochondroma of the spine in elderly patients. Report of 3 cases.

Whereas osteochondroma is a common benign bone tumor in adolescence, it is rarely observed in elderly patients. It is unknown why osteochondromas, which usually develop during skeletal growth, rarely develop in elderly patients. The authors report 3 cases of symptomatic spinal osteochondroma in elderly patients and discuss the possible reasons for the onset of the enlargement of osteochondromas in elderly patients.

Food-chain length and adaptive foraging.

However, the determinants of food-chain length still remain controversial. While classical theory predicts that food-chain length should increase with increasing resource availability, empirical supports of this prediction are limited to those from simple, artificial microcosms.

[A longitudinal study of the trajectories of deviant behavior among junior high school students].

This study investigated the trajectories and related factors of deviant behavior among students during their three years of junior high school. Data was analyzed from 344 students who completed a questionnaire survey every September. Nineteen categories of deviant behavior were examined, such as smoking, drinking alcohol, bullying, truancy, violence, and stealing.

[Pulmonary nocardiosis in a patient with diffuse panbronchiolitis].

A 53-year-old woman under treatment for diffuse panbronchiolitis, complained of fever and bloody sputum, Chest radiograph showed infiltrative shadows in both lung fields. Nocardia farcinica was cultured from BALF and pulmonary nocardiosis was diagnosed. She was successfully treated with sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim, LVFX.

Postoperative outcome after modified unilateral-approach microendoscopic midline decompression for degenerative spinal stenosis.

Object: The object of this study was to assess the feasibility and efficacy of a novel, minimally invasive spinal surgery technique to correct degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis involving a modified unilateral-approach microendoscopic midline decompression.

Methods: In this prospective study, 41 patients with lumbar stenosis were randomly assigned to undergo either a novel, median-approach microendoscopic laminectomy (20 patients) or a conventional laminectomy (21 patients).
