Controlling pathogen circulation in wildlife reservoirs is notoriously challenging. In Latin America, vampire bats have been culled for decades in hopes of mitigating lethal rabies infections in humans and livestock. Whether culls reduce or exacerbate rabies transmission remains controversial.

Introduction: The detection of the human papillomavirus (HPV) through the combination of the HPV test and other techniques such as cytology has impacted the detection and timely treatment of lesions associated with cervical cancer. Objective: To estimate the budgetary impact of the strategy of early detection of HPV with DNA test genotyping with reflex cytology versus conventional cytology in women aged 30 to 65 years attending the cervical cancer screening program at a health benefit managing entity in Colombia. Materials and methods: Using a decision tree and a Markov model, the clinical implications and direct costs of screening, diagnosis, and treatment were estimated in a cohort of women.

An 11-month-old Japanese girl was diagnosed with food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) after presenting with vomiting approximately two hours after wheat intake. She showed positive results on the first wheat oral food challenge (OFC) at nine months of age, although serum wheat- and ω-5 gliadin-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) were not detected. The second wheat OFC, performed at age 13 months, induced wheezing (usually an IgE-mediated symptom) 4.

Rabies virus infections normally cause universally lethal encephalitis across mammals. However, 'abortive infections' which are resolved prior to the onset of lethal disease have been described in bats and a variety of non-reservoir species. Here, we surveyed rabies virus neutralizing antibody titers in 332 unvaccinated livestock of 5 species from a vampire bat rabies endemic region of southern Peru where livestock are the main food source for bats.

What is the role of a single dose of oral corticosteroids for those with acute sore throat? Using the GRADE framework according to the BMJ Rapid Recommendation process, an expert panel make a weak recommendation in favour of corticosteroid use. The panel produced these recommendations based on a linked systematic review triggered by a large randomised trial published in April 2017. This trial reported that corticosteroids increased the proportion of patients with complete resolution of pain at 48 hours.

Article Synopsis
  • Antibiotics like erythromycin and tylosin are being increasingly used in beekeeping to combat brood diseases, especially as resistance to oxytetracycline develops.
  • Brazilian officials have introduced these antibiotics into a regulatory program to monitor honey for residues.
  • A new analytical method has been established to detect residual levels of these antibiotics in honey, showing high recovery rates and specific detection limits for both substances.

Streptomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic used in apiculture to protect bees against a variety of brood diseases. Brazilian authorities have included it in the National Regulatory Monitoring Program for honey production. A simple and reliable method using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry has been developed and validated for the determination of streptomycin in honey.

Ethopabate is frequently used in the prophylaxis and treatment of coccidiosis in poultry. Residues of this drug in food present a potential risk to consumers. A simple, rapid, and sensitive column high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) method with UV detection for determination of ethopabate in poultry liver is presented.

In this work we have analyzed the penetration of betalactoglobulin into a monoglyceride monolayer (monopalmitin or monoolein) spread at the air-water interface and its effects on the structural, dilatational, and topographical characteristics of mixed films. Dynamic tensiometry, surface film balance, Brewster angle microscopy (BAM), and surface dilatational rheology have been used, maintaining the temperature constant at 20 degrees C and the pH and ionic strength at 7 and 0.05 M, respectively.

The effects of practice on 2 retrievals from a single cue were investigated. In Experiment 1, participants were given extended single-task practice and were then tested on a dual memory retrieval task. Perfomance was consistent with a sequential retrieval model proposed by T.

The presence of plasticizers in PVC toys obtained in October 1998 was investigated. Diisononyl phthalate (DINP), di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), dinonyl phthalate (DNP), diheptyl phthalate (DHP), and di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) were detected. The phthalates were found in all of the 68 samples.
