Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical properties of SutureTape as an alternative technique for arthrodesis of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) and proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint arthrodesis when compared with surgical steel wire.

Methods: A total of 32 fingers (index, long, ring, and small) from two matched pair cadaveric hands were used. K-wire and surgical steel wire were used for MCP and PIP joint arthrodesis of the control group (group I), whereas K-wire and SutureTape were used for the experimental group (group II).

Article Synopsis
  • Dupuytren contracture causes cords and nodules in the palm, and while surgery is a standard treatment, collagenase clostridium histolyticum (CCH) offers a non-surgical alternative, particularly for challenging proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint contractures.
  • A study reviewed 304 patients treated with CCH and found that both isolated and combined contractures significantly improved post-treatment, with residual contractures averaging around 6-7 degrees.
  • However, the treatment was associated with a high incidence of adverse events, especially skin tears, particularly in more severe cases, suggesting that earlier intervention could enhance treatment outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • * A narrative review evaluated the effectiveness of these products for conditions such as Achilles tendinopathy and nerve repairs, with pre-clinical studies showing encouraging results.
  • * The increasing availability of amniotic-derived biologics in orthopedic practice offers potential benefits, but more research is needed to understand long-term effects and any possible complications.

Purpose: The intramedullary interlocking device for metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint arthrodesis (XMCP, Extremity Medical, Parsippany, NJ) has been shown to promote union at a precise angle, provide strong fixation without the need for prolonged immobilization, and lower the incidence of hardware irritation and revision surgery. In this study, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of patients undergoing MCP joint arthrodesis with the XMCP system using a retrospective chart review, patient reported outcomes, and radiographic analysis.

Methods: A retrospective chart review and phone survey was conducted on 57 patients (58 cases) from a single institution between 2017 and 2022.

Purpose: Distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) arthritis can cause painful and limited motion of the forearm leading to decreased function. When conservative treatment options are exhausted, surgical treatments are the next step. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively and prospectively evaluate outcomes of Scheker DRUJ total arthroplasty at a single center and add to the limited data on this procedure.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate circumstances surrounding power saw injuries. We hypothesized that power saw injuries are caused by either inexperienced or inappropriate usage of saws.

Methods: A retrospective review of patients at our level 1 trauma center from January 2011 to April 2022 was conducted.

Purpose: Injectable collagenase Clostridium histolyticum has been an effective and well-tolerated nonsurgical treatment option for the management of Dupuytren contracture of the hand. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of collagenase injection and adverse event rate in patients who had undergone previous collagenase treatment.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was performed on 332 patients treated with collagenase injection for Dupuytren contracture by three fellowship-trained hand surgeons at a single institution from 2009 to 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • Non-Hispanic Blacks are diagnosed with earlier stages of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) compared to non-Hispanic Whites, but it’s unclear how other minority groups compare.
  • The study analyzed data from 37,493 RCC patients between 2007 and 2015, using logistic regression to assess the relationship between race/ethnicity and advanced RCC stages at diagnosis.
  • The findings revealed that non-Hispanic Blacks had lower odds of advanced RCC compared to non-Hispanic Whites, while non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaskan Natives and Hispanics had higher odds for specific tumor subtypes, highlighting the need for further research on these disparities.
