Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato strain DC3000 not only causes bacterial speck disease in Solanum lycopersicum but also on Brassica species, as well as on Arabidopsis thaliana, a genetically tractable host plant(1,2). Erythroid differentiation is a tightly regulated multi-step process that has not been fully elucidated. We have investigated the propagation of the long-range mode (LRSP) and the short-range mode (SRSP) surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along the waveguide made from Au film and quantum wells (QWs) gain medium. Influenced by the gain spectral nonuniformity, the SRSP showed narrower spectrum than the LRSP in output, denoting that the SRSP propagation was supported by stimulated amplification (SA) in electrically-pumped QWs. In this paper, we propose a Minimum Average-cost Path (MACP) model for segmenting 3D coronary arteries by minimizing the average edge cost along path in discrete 4D graph constructed by image voxels and associated radii. Prim's Minimum Spanning Tree method is used for efficient optimization of the MACP model. The centerline and the radii of the cross sections of the coronary artery are extracted simultaneously during the optimization.

We experimentally demonstrate a novel tunable true-time delay line with separate carrier tuning using dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator and stimulated Brillouin scattering-induced slow light. The phase of the optical carrier can be continuously and precisely controlled by simply adjusting the dc bias of the dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator. In addition, both the slow light and single-sideband modulation can be simultaneously achieved in the stimulated Brillouin scattering process with three types of configuration.

Neuregulin-1 (NRG1) plays a crucial role in axoglial signaling during the development of the peripheral nervous system, but its importance in adulthood after peripheral nerve injury remains unclear. We used single-neuron labeling with inducible Cre-mediated knock-out animals, which enabled visualization of a subset of adult myelinated sensory and motoneurons neurons in which Nrg1 was inducibly mutated by tamoxifen treatment. In uninjured mice, NRG1-deficient axons and the associated myelin sheath were normal, and the neuromuscular junction demonstrated normal apposition of presynaptic and postsynaptic components.

Following peripheral nerve injury microglia accumulate within the spinal cord and adopt a proinflammatory phenotype a process which contributes to the development of neuropathic pain. We have recently shown that neuregulin-1, a growth factor released following nerve injury, activates erbB 2, 3, and 4 receptors on microglia and stimulates proliferation, survival and chemotaxis of these cells. In vitro studies on the interactions between native herring sperm DNA (HS-DNA) and melamine as well as its related compounds (MARCs), that is, ammeline, ammelide, and cyanuric acid, have been investigated by spectrophotometric, spectrofluorometric, melting temperature, and viscosimetric techniques. It was found that any of the MARCs might interact with HS-DNA by a groove mode of binding via hydrogen bonds. The interaction constants between any of the MARCs and HS-DNA were at 10⁴-10⁵ L mol⁻¹, determined by both spectrophotometric and spectrofluorometric methods.

Elevated IL-12 production and higher rate of CD4(+) T conventional (Tconv) cell proliferation in NOD mice have been implicated in the progression of type 1 diabetes. However, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown, even though enhanced activation of the IkappaB kinase (IKK)/NF-kappaB pathway has been revealed to mediate IL-12 overproduction. In this study, we report that deviated p38 MAPK activation also contributes to elevated IL-12 production with a mechanism involving MAPK-activated protein kinase-2-mediated stabilization of IL-12p40 mRNA.

In this Letter, we demonstrate theoretically the design of a polarization-insensitive echelle grating demultiplexer on a nanophotonic silicon-on-insulator platform. The polarization-insensitive performance is achieved through a dual-grating system, which utilizes different concave gratings for different polarizations. The first concave grating acts as a polarization to beam splitter as well, allowing light with the other polarization to pass through and be reflected by the second grating, which is designed separately; thus the same spectral responses are obtained for the two polarizations.

A key component in the response of the nervous system to injury is the proliferation and switch to a "proinflammatory" phenotype by microglia (microgliosis). In situations where the blood-brain barrier is intact, microglial numbers increase via the proliferation and chemotaxis of resident microglia; however, there is limited knowledge regarding the factors mediating this response. After peripheral nerve injury, a dorsal horn microgliosis develops, which directly contributes to the development of neuropathic pain.
