Successful one-stage resection of intracardiac intravenous leiomyomatosis: A case report.

This case report is about a 47-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with intracardiac intravenous leiomyomatosis and received treatment at our institution. Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare, histologically benign, uterine neoplasm, which is characterized by non-invasive intravascular proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Intravenous leiomyomatosis arises from the myometrium and, in its most extensive form, can reach the heart via the pelvic veins and the inferior vena cava, causing hemodynamic complications.

Linking integrity of visual pathways trajectories to visual behavior deficit in very preterm infants.

Low-risk premature infants often develop visual deficits, even in the absence of ophthalmological complications and high-graded brain injury. These complications can be explained by the nature of subtle perinatal lesions and alterations of brain growth due to the prematurity. Subtle brain injuries and vulnerability of axonal pathways can be observed in spatiotemporal context of the white matter segments.

This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the practice of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in children with burn injury, their predictive factors, and adherence to the German transfusion guideline.

Relative importance of wildlife and livestock transmission route of brucellosis in southwestern Uganda.

The data in brief provides a descriptive summary of the field data collected using Eco-health approach in order to support local effort aimed at creating information base for taking evidence-based decisions, especially in regard to wildlife conservation outside protected area and range resource management. The data were collected between June 2012 and July 2014 on a range of issues including wild animals, livestock, household income and cost of diseases control in cattle. In a nutshell the data article shows spatial pattern of a declining brucellosis prevalence in cattle linked to animal population density with increasing distance away from the Lake Mburo National Park (LMNP) boundary in southwestern Uganda.

[Therapeutic effect of BILT combined with praziquantel in treatment of chronic schistosomiasis].

Objective: To investigate the clinical therapeutic effect of biological information infrared liver therapeutic apparatus (BILT) combined with praziquantel in the treatment of patients with chronic schistosomiasis.

Methods: A case-control study was conducted. A total of 142 chronic schistosomiasis patients were divided into an experimental group (BILT combined with praziquantel) with 64 cases and a control group (routine treatment with praziquantel alone) with 78 cases on the basis of the age, gender, disease duration and liver function as paired condition.

Giant calcified thoracic herniated disc: considerations aiming a proper surgical strategy.

Aim: Giant herniated thoracic disc (HTD) is a rare disease that, unlike other thoracic disc herniations of different size, need a different surgical management. The copresence of ''giant'' volume and calcification of the herniated disc heavily affects the surgical difficulty and is not elsewhere described.

Osteoblastoma (OB) is a rare primary benign bone tumor. It generally occurs in the axial skeleton, where it preferentially involves the neural arch. The peak incidence of this neoplasm is in the first two decades of life.

Coating zinc oxide submicron crystals on poly(methyl methacrylate) chips and spheres via ultrasound irradiation.

Ultrasound irradiation is used for anchoring zinc oxide submicron crystals with a main diameter and length of approximately 280 nm and 470 nm, respectively, onto the surface of poly(methyl methacrylate) PMMA chips (2mm diameter), and zinc oxide crystals with a mean diameter and length of approximately 150 nm and 230 nm, respectively, onto the surface of the PMMA spheres (1-10 microm). The zinc oxide crystals were obtained by sonochemical irradiation of a mixture containing the PMMA, zinc (II) acetate dihydrate, ethanol, water, and 24 wt.% aqueous ammonia for 2h, yielding a PMMA-zinc oxide composite.

Use of resorbable implants for symptomatic cervical spondylosis: experience on 16 consecutive patients.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of a consecutive series of 16 patients affected by degenerative cervical spondylosis and operated on by anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACFD) by means of anterior bioresorbable plate and screws. Further, the authors compared the results in these patients with a series of 13 patients also affected by degenerative cervical spondylosis in whom arthrodesis was obtained by means of cages without plates.\

Methods: The series included 8 males and 8 females aging from 37 to 69 years, operated from June 2003 to September 2004.

Aggressive recurrence of intra-extradural cervico-thoracic meningothelial meningioma.

The authors analysed the case of a 53-years-old woman who presented with an C5-D1 intra-extradural mass. Following subtotal removal, the tumour was histologically classified as meningothelial meningioma and no radiotherapy was recommended. The neuroradiological workup demonstrated that the lesion was stable one year after the operation but, a few months later a tumour recurrence with huge bone destruction was detected.
