This case report is about a 47-year-old patient, who was diagnosed with intracardiac intravenous leiomyomatosis and received treatment at our institution. Intravenous leiomyomatosis is a rare, histologically benign, uterine neoplasm, which is characterized by non-invasive intravascular proliferation of smooth muscle cells. Intravenous leiomyomatosis arises from the myometrium and, in its most extensive form, can reach the heart via the pelvic veins and the inferior vena cava, causing hemodynamic complications.

Low-risk premature infants often develop visual deficits, even in the absence of ophthalmological complications and high-graded brain injury. These complications can be explained by the nature of subtle perinatal lesions and alterations of brain growth due to the prematurity. Subtle brain injuries and vulnerability of axonal pathways can be observed in spatiotemporal context of the white matter segments.

ATP-binding cassette subfamily E member 1 (ABCE1) belongs to the ABC protein family of transporters; however, it does not behave as a drug transporter. Instead, ABCE1 actively participates in different stages of translation and is also associated with oncogenic functions. Ribosome profiling analysis in colorectal cancer cells has revealed a high ribosome occupancy in the human mRNA 5'-leader sequence, indicating the presence of translatable upstream open reading frames (uORFs).

Background: Patient blood management programs should be applied to the pediatric population, but little is known about the current transfusion practice of pediatric burn injury patients. This retrospective study was performed to evaluate the practice of red blood cell (RBC) transfusion in children with burn injury, their predictive factors, and adherence to the German transfusion guideline.

Methods: We reviewed the RBC transfusion practice of all children younger than 8 years with burn injury who were operated during a four-year period in a German university medical center.

The looming problem of resistance to antibiotics in microorganisms is a global health concern. The drug-resistant microorganisms originating from anthropogenic sources and commercial livestock farming have posed serious environmental and health challenges. Antibiotic-resistant genes constituting the environmental "resistome" get transferred to human and veterinary pathogens.

Article Synopsis
  • The mitochondrial electron transport chain (mtETC) in Plasmodium falciparum is a crucial target for drug development, and understanding its assembly factors, particularly Pfsurf1, is essential.
  • Bioinformatics techniques, including sequence alignment and phylogenetic analysis, confirmed that Pfsurf1 shares significant similarities with the SURF1 family, and it can function similarly to human and yeast counterparts.
  • Yeast complementation studies demonstrated that Pfsurf1 can partially restore function in a yeast mutant lacking the Shy1 protein, suggesting that it is a functional ortholog of the SURF1 proteins in other species.

In the modern era evidence-based medicine, guidelines and recommendations represent a key-point of daily activity. The Spinal Section of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery introduced some recommendations regarding Degenerative Lumbar Spine Stenosis based on those of the Spine Committee of World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies, revising them on the basis of Italian common practice. In June 2019, a Committee of 21 spine surgeons met in Rome to validate the recommendations of the WFNS.

Article Synopsis
  • Prohibitins (PHBs) are important proteins in mitochondria, classified into two types: PHB1 and PHB2, which work together in regulating mitochondrial structure and function.
  • They interact to form heterodimers in the mitochondrial inner membrane.
  • Research indicates that Plasmodium falciparum also has these proteins (Pf PHB1 and Pf PHB2), which might interact in a similar way, suggesting a potential role in maintaining mitochondrial function in this organism.

Brucellosis in cattle and humans has received world-wide research attention as a neglected and re-emerging zoonotic disease with many routes of transmission. Studies of brucellosis in Uganda have emphasized occupational exposures and also revealed variations in prevalence levels by region and cattle production systems. To date, research linking pastoralist household income from dairy production to brucellosis and its transmission risk pathways do not exist in Uganda.

The rotary nanomotor ATP synthase is a central player in the bioenergetics of most organisms. Yet the role of ATP synthase in malaria parasites has remained unclear, as blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum appear to derive ATP largely through glycolysis. Also, genes for essential subunits of the F(O) sector of the complex could not be detected in the parasite genomes.

Aim: Giant herniated thoracic disc (HTD) is a rare disease that, unlike other thoracic disc herniations of different size, need a different surgical management. The copresence of ''giant'' volume and calcification of the herniated disc heavily affects the surgical difficulty and is not elsewhere described.

Methods: Seven cases of surgically treated giant calcified HTDs were considered in this study.
