Multiple myeloma (MM) is a malignant tumor occurring from plasma cells that produce an abnormal monoclonal immunoglobulin - a paraprotein. A distinctive feature of Bence-Jones myeloma is the excretion of monoclonal free light chains of immunoglobulins with 24h urine, and the absence of monoclonal intact immunoglobulins secretion. Comprehensive analysis of biochemical parameters in blood serum and 24h urine in patients with Bence-Jones multiple myeloma using electrophoretic and immunoturbidimetric methods to assess their sensitivity as biomarkers.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms from cells of the diffuse neuroendocrine system. Chromogranin B (CgB) is an acidic protein of the granin family, which can be used to detect the tumours of neuroendocrine nature. Analysis of levels and evaluation of the diagnostic efficiency of CgB in the blood serum of patients with NETs of various localizations.

Introduction: Renal adverse events are a troublesome complication of bisphosphonate therapy. This study investigated the effect of intravenous ibandronic acid (ibandronate) treatment on renal function in breast cancer patients with metastatic bone disease.

Methods: 74 patients were randomised to double-blind (but not dose-blind) treatment with bolus injections of ibandronic acid 2mg (n = 23), 1-hour infusions of ibandronic acid 6mg (n = 28), or placebo injections or infusions (n = 23).

Degradation products of collagen type I can be measured by CrossLaps (CTX) immunoassays, providing an index of bone resorption. The CTX epitope EKAHDGGR comprises a DG-motif susceptible to post-translational modifications. In newly synthesized collagen this motif is in the native form denoted alphaCTX, but converts to an isomerized form (betaCTX) during aging of bone.

Background: Fragments of collagen type I containing the epitope AHDGGR (CTX) are generated during bone resorption. The aspartyl-glycine (DG) site within CTX is synthesised in the L-aspartyl peptide (alphaL) form, but converts to the age-modified forms L-isoaspartyl peptide (betaL) and D-aspartyl peptide (alphaD) over time. The purpose of the present study was to test the ability of the various CTX forms to identify breast cancer patients with bone metastases and to investigate whether such patients had an altered CTX excretion pattern.
