Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the connection between thrombo-inflammatory and oxidative stress biomarkers and erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) hyporesponsiveness in chronic hemodialysis patients.
  • It included 96 patients, analyzing various biomarkers and clinical data to calculate the ESA-hyporesponsiveness index (EHRI).
  • Findings indicate that low body mass index (BMI) and high levels of L-type fatty acid binding protein (L-FABP) are significant predictors of ESA resistance, suggesting these factors could help identify patients at risk for reduced responsiveness to ESA therapy.

Background: To provide competent and respectful sexual health care, a critical and comprehensive assessment of students' attitudes towards sexuality is needed, which implies using reliable and valid questionnaires.

Aim: To assess whether the extended version of the Students Attitude Towards Addressing Sexual Health (SA-SH-Ext) provides different, additional information about students' attitudes towards providing sexual healthcare compared to the Sexual Attitude and Beliefs Survey (SABS), to explore SA-SH-Ext potential response patterns through latent class analysis and to assess students' attitudes towards providing sexual healthcare and evaluate the differences in their attitudes to the cultural background and sociodemographic characteristics.

Design: Multicentre, descriptive, analytical, comparative, and correlational cross-sectional study at three nursing faculties.

Introduction: Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) are derived by reprogramming adult somatic cells using a forced expression of four specific transcription factors in a highly controlled artificial environment. The aim of this paper is to examine the knowledge about these cells of the general population and the population of health workers in relation to gender.

Methods: The research was designed as a cohort study conducted with a validated questionnaire to assess knowledge about iPSCs.

Article Synopsis
  • The relationship between the body and its environment influences vital host-microbiome interactions that affect how diseases differ between sexes, including susceptibility, symptoms, and treatment results.
  • Factors like hormones, immune responses, and genetic differences contribute to these discrepancies and interact throughout a person's life, while the gut microbiome plays a significant role in various body systems.
  • The paper reviews current knowledge on how sex hormones, gut bacteria, and overall health relate to cardiovascular disease differences between genders, highlighting research gaps and the need for a more integrated approach in future studies.

Aim: To investigate an association between eye injury and later academic and social performance.

Materials: A retrospective longitudinal study of taking measurements multiple times was conducted including all severe eye injuries admitted during 2011-2017 at the main regional clinic to investigate changes in academic success and social inclusion before and after an injury. Parents/caregivers were surveyed asking questions on academic performance, and community/social involvement.

Background: The interaction of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), host and antiretroviral therapy (ART) causes a range of metabolic disorders that can be characterized as a metabolic syndrome (MetS) that increases the cardiovascular risk. MetS involves central obesity, which can be detected using different anthropometric parameters.

Objective: To assess the abilities of different anthropometric parameters in the prediction of MetS in HIV-infected men on ART.

Aims: Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is a multifactorial, multisystemic syndrome that involves alterations in lipid metabolism. This study aimed to test whether distinct plasma lipid profiles or lipid entities or both are associated with clinical and functional echocardiographic parameters in HFpEF.

Methods And Results: We examined the human plasma lipidome in HFpEF patients (n = 18) with left ventricular ejection fraction ≥50% and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) >125 pg/mL and control subjects (n = 12) using mass spectrometry-based shotgun lipidomics.

Aim To examine and quantify patients' satisfaction and correlate with the objective clinical presentation after the treatment and to present a comprehensive literature review on tarsoconjunctival/ Hughes flap technique. Methods A review of more than 159 peer-review articles and a combined retrospective-prospective two-centres case series of 17 patients who underwent a two-stage modified Hughes flap procedure (2019-2021) to repair a lower eyelid defect caused by epithelial cancer was conducted. All patients were followed up for a minimum of six months.

Aims And Objectives: To evaluate demographic and occupational factors of professional life on life satisfaction among nurses in Serbia and Poland.

Background: Compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, as aspects of a nurse's professional life, may affect their satisfaction with life in general. However, most studies on this topic have been conducted in Asian countries, and because there are differences in health care system performance across countries amid a global shortage of nurses, it is necessary to investigate professional quality of life in the European nursing context.

(1) Background: Short Assessment of Health Literacy for Spanish Adults (SAHLSA-50) was originally designed for Spanish-speaking regions, and translations validated for several languages. The aim of the study was to adapt and verify the psychometric characteristics of SAHLSA-50 in the Croatian context; (2) Methods: The cross-sectional study included 590 respondents from the general population older than 18 years of age. Health literacy was measured by two scales: SAHLCA-50 and the Croatian version of the Newest Vital Sign screening test (NVS-HR), which was used as a measure of concurrent validity.

A bony fracture in the orbital floor, the most common site, can lead to tissue herniation, enophthalmos, hypoglobus, or strabismic diplopia. Several surgical approaches for repair have been described in the literature. This report is a description of an illustrative case and a brief summary of the literature related to the transconjunctival approach to orbital floor fracture repair as performed by ophthalmologists.

Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is one of the most important indicators of cell viability. Extracellular ATP (eATP) is commonly detected in cultures of both eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells but is not the focus of current scientific research. Although ATP release has traditionally been considered to mainly occur as a consequence of cell destruction, current evidence indicates that ATP leakage also occurs during the growth phase of diverse bacterial species and may play an important role in bacterial physiology.

Nicotinamide riboside (NR) has recently become one of the most studied nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) precursors, due to its numerous potential health benefits mediated via elevated NAD content in the body. NAD is an essential coenzyme that plays important roles in various metabolic pathways and increasing its overall content has been confirmed as a valuable strategy for treating a wide variety of pathophysiological conditions. Accumulating evidence on NRs' health benefits has validated its efficiency across numerous animal and human studies for the treatment of a number of cardiovascular, neurodegenerative, and metabolic disorders.

Periocular skin is highly prone to malignancies, especially basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas. Because of the complex anatomy and eye-protecting functions of the periocular tissues, treatment of these cancers requires special considerations. Mohs micrographic surgery is usually the treatment of choice, whenever possible, in order to enhance margin control while limiting collateral damage to nearby normal structures.

Introduction: Eye lid reconstruction followed by severe, extensive body and facial burns represents a surgical challenge due to difficulties to obtain proper, healthy skin graft, tissue ischemia and necrosis.

Presentation Of Case: We present a reconstructive lid surgery of cicatricial bilateral lower eyelid ectropion in a case of 31-year-old man who sustained thermal injuries, affecting more than 60% of total body surface area, causing severe, deep dermal burns. Reconstruction was made using the technique of skin cantus-to-cantus incision, contracture release, orbicularis liberation and lid elevation; and oversizing free full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) (Wolfe technique) from the left inguinal region, as the only healthy skin on the entire body surface.
