Article Synopsis
  • PRV-1 is a virus that makes Atlantic salmon sick, causing problems in their hearts and muscles.
  • This study looked at how PRV-1 spreads in salmon farms in Norway and found that the virus came from different sources but stayed mostly the same genetically.
  • It suggests that keeping fish farms empty for a while can help stop the virus from spreading to new fish and that being around the virus when they're young could be a way it gets introduced.

Piscine orthoreovirus-1 (PRV-1) is the causative agent of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). However, it has been shown that PRV-1 variants differ in their ability to induce HSMI. The objective of this work was to identify the PRV-1 variants in Norwegian aquaculture and their geographical distribution.

Piscine orthoreovirus 1 (PRV-1) is the causative agent of heart and skeletal muscle inflammation (HSMI) in farmed Atlantic salmon (). The virus is widespread in Atlantic salmon and was present in Norway long before the first description of HSMI in 1999. Furthermore, in Canada the virus is prevalent in farmed Atlantic salmon but HSMI is not and Canadian isolates have failed to reproduce HSMI experimentally.
