Chronic pressure overload induces adverse cardiac remodelling characterised by left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and fibrosis, leading to heart failure (HF). Identification of new biomarkers for adverse cardiac remodelling enables us to better understand this process and, consequently, to prevent HF. We recently identified clusterin (CLU) as a biomarker of cardiac remodelling and HF after myocardial infarction.

Article Synopsis
  • Localized cystic disease of the kidney (LCDK) is a rare, non-progressive condition that can be mistaken for cancer, potentially leading to unnecessary surgeries.
  • In a study of 14 patients (ages 3-79, mostly middle-aged), most cases presented as unilateral and many patients experienced flank pain or had incidental findings.
  • The lesions were multilocular and benign, lacking malignant features, and a review of 75 other cases supports the idea that LCDK should be included in the differential diagnosis for cystic kidney lesions.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasingly recognized as a metabolic disorder, often referred to as type 3 diabetes, due to its strong association with insulin resistance. Chronic exposure to aluminum, a known neurotoxin, has been identified as a significant risk factor in the development and progression of AD. This study explores the potential of metformin, a common anti-diabetic drug, to mitigate aluminum-induced neurotoxicity in an in vitro model of AD.

Chronic and excessive alcohol consumption leads to liver toxicity. There is a need to investigate effective therapeutic strategies to alleviate alcohol-induced liver injury, which remains the leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. Therefore here, we looked into and evaluated how ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity was affected by coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) and its analog, idebenone (IDE), on the NLRP3/caspase-1/IL-1 pathway.

Juxtaglomerular cell tumor (JGCT) is a rare neoplasm, part of the family of mesenchymal tumors of the kidney. Although the pathophysiological and clinical correlates of JGCT are well known, as these tumors are an important cause of early-onset arterial hypertension refractory to medical treatment, their molecular background is unknown, with only few small studies investigating their karyotype. Herein we describe a multi-institutional cohort of JGCTs diagnosed by experienced genitourinary pathologists, evaluating clinical presentation and outcome, morphologic diversity, and, importantly, the molecular features.
