The aim of the study was to establish the prognostic and predictive value of Bax and Bcl-2 proteins in conjunction with the host immune response in primary epithelial ovarian carcinoma.83 patients were evaluated. Immunohistochemical staining was performed using anti-Bcl-2 (Dako; clone 124) and anti-Bax (Springbio; E17994) monoclonal antibodies.

This prospective study investigated the relationship between serum osteoprotegerin, receptor activator of NF-κB ligand, inflammatory markers, and progression of coronary artery calcification score.
Design, Setting, Participants, & Measurements: Seventy-eight hemodialysis patients were enrolled.
Study Design: Retrospective case series.
Purpose: The objectives of this study were to determine and discuss the surgical planning of patients who underwent operations following diagnoses of thoracal and lumbar spinal schwannomas. We also aimed to discuss the application of unilateral hemilaminectomy for the microsurgery of schwannomas.
Purpose: To evaluate the toxicity and efficacy of oxaliplatin combined with the Nordic regimen of bolus 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and leucovorin (LV) (Nordic-FLOX) as adjuvant treatment in stage III colon cancer patients.
Methods: Fifty-three patients with resected stage III colon cancer were treated with adjuvant bolus Nordic-FLOX regimen (oxaliplatin 85 mg/m(2) on day 1, bolus 5-FU 500 mg/ m(2) and bolus LV 60 mg/m(2) days 1 and 2) every 2 weeks for 12 cycles.
Results: The probability of disease-free survival (DFS) at a median follow-up time of 29 months was 72%.
Background: Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI) and hemolytic transfusion reactions account for significant transfusion-related morbidity and mortality in the United States. Our study evaluated types and quantities of transfused components as well as occurrence of TRALI, ABO, and Rh incompatibilities among the US elderly in the institutional outpatient setting during 2007 to 2008.
Study Design And Methods: This retrospective claims-based study utilized the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services' large administrative databases.

Objective: To use a 2-part model to identify biographic, injury, educational, and vocational predictors of postinjury employment and the percentage of time employed after spinal cord injury (SCI) onset.
Design: Survey.
Setting: Data were collected at 3 hospitals in the Southeastern and Midwestern United States.
Background/aims: We aimed to investigate the hepatoprotective effects of dihydromyrcenol and geranyl formate extracted from the Vitis vinifera L. plant in a rat model of acute hepatic injury induced by carbon tetrachloride.
Methods: The study was performed on 54 Sprague-Dawley male rats.
Background: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate multiple myeloma patients presenting with renal failure in a University hospital.
Methods: The records of all the patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma in the departments of hematology and nephrology at Gazi University Hospital between January 2010 and January 2011 were reviewed retrospectively. Renal failure was defined as a serum creatinine level of ≥2 mg/dL.
We used administrative databases to assess babesiosis among elderly persons in the United States by year, sex, age, race, state of residence, and diagnosis months during 2006-2008. The highest babesiosis rates were in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and Massachusetts, and findings suggested babesiosis expansion to other states.

We present a comprehensive theory of the temperature and disorder dependence of their magnetic properties by deriving and validating a new effective spin Hamiltonian for these materials, amenable to large-scale three-dimensional simulations. We show how disorder, ubiquitous in these materials, affects T(c), the magnetization, and the conduction electron polarization.

Dichorionic twin pregnancy discordant for fetal anencephaly is a serious condition that threatens the normal co-twin's life by causing polyhydramniosis, preterm labor and sudden death of one or both of the fetuses. We report a case of dichorionic twin pregnancy discordant for fetal anencephaly delivered at the 32(nd) week of gestation because of preterm labor and nonreassuring fetal monitoring. The aim of this case report is to summarize management options in this situation.

Metastasis to the breast and/or axillary-intramammary lymph node is very rare. It usually occurs in advanced disease, and it is important to distinguish a primary breast cancer from an ovarian cancer metastasis since the management of these two entities is totally different.

There is an explosion of the data regarding inflammatory markers in FMF and clinical effects of chronic inflammation on the disease presentation. Vitamin D (vit D) is the common denomination of a group of sterols with a crucial role in phospho-calcium metabolism.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease with unknown etiology. Although liver dysfunction is rare in SLE, 25 - 50% of patients may develop abnormal liver functions. Here, we described a case presented as fulminant hepatitis and diagnosed as SLE.

An important challenge is to narrow down the set of candidate genes that are implicated by these analyses. Protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks are useful in extracting the functional relationships between known disease and candidate genes, based on the principle that products of genes implicated in similar diseases are likely to exhibit significant connectivity/proximity.

The chemical parameters were those typical for tarhana production. Coliform bacteria were not detected during fermentation, while LAB and yeasts were in the range 10(7)-10(8) colony forming units (CFU) g(-1).

Aim: Carotid artery intima media thickness (CA-IMT) measurement has been shown to be a safe and reproducible method to assess severity of atherosclerosis. The association between nephrosclerosis and systemic atherosclerosis is not clear. In this study, we investigated the association between CA-IMT and nephrosclerosis in a group of kidney transplant donors.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: High-throughput molecular interaction data have been used effectively to prioritize candidate genes that are linked to a disease, based on the observation that the products of genes associated with similar diseases are likely to interact with each other heavily in a network of protein-protein interactions (PPIs). An important challenge for these applications, however, is the incomplete and noisy nature of PPI data. Information flow based methods alleviate these problems to a certain extent, by considering indirect interactions and multiplicity of paths.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide. Although the aetiology of this disease remains largely unclear, several lines of evidence suggest that oxidative stress plays a role in prostate carcinogenesis. The antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) is part of the enzymatic antioxidant defence, preventing oxidative damage to DNA, proteins and lipids by detoxifying hydrogen and lipid peroxides that may contribute to prostate cancer development.
