Transauricular vagal nerve stimulation suppresses inflammatory responses in the gut and brain in an inflammatory bowel disease model.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) encompasses Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is a major health problem on a global scale and its treatment is unsatisfactory. We aimed to investigate the effects of transauricular vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) on inflammation in rats with IBD induced by trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS). A total of 36 adult female Sprague-Dawley rats were given TNBS, or vehicle, and tVNS, or sham, every other day for 30 min for 10 days.

Spinal anesthesia vs general anesthesia in the endoscopic management of proximal ureteral stones: A critical evaluation focusing on the total anesthesia time.

Introduction: This study was aimed to compare spinal and general anesthesia methods in endoscopic management of proximal ureteral stones with a particular emphasis on total anesthesia time.

Methods: A total of 246 adult patients undergoing ureteroscopic management for proximal ureteral stones between January 2021 and March 2023 were enrolled. Two different types of anesthesia namely spinal (Group 1, n=109) and general (Group 2, n=137) anesthesia were applied during these procedures.

Efficacy and Safety of CT-P13 as First- and Second-Line Treatment in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis.

CT-P13 is a biosimilar version of infliximab, a monoclonal antibody. In individuals with ankylosing spondylitis (AS), CT-P13 has been shown to be effective and to have a well-tolerated safety profile. The aim of this study was to evaluate the long-term drug persistence, safety, and efficacy of infliximab biosimilar CT-P13 in patients with AS undergoing first-line (1st-line) and later (≥2nd-line) treatment in clinical practice.

Age-Related Differences Between Juvenile and Adult Autoimmune Inflammatory Myopathies.

Background: Clinical features and prognosis of autoimmune inflammatory myopathies (AIMs) can vary depending on the age of disease onset. The aim of this study was to compare the demographic characteristics, clinical features, laboratory findings, and long-term prognosis of juvenile and adult AIMs.

Methods: Patients diagnosed with AIM between 2009 and 2023 in the pediatric rheumatology and rheumatology departments of our hospital were included in this medical records review study.

Black-carrot drink şalgam as a habitat for spoilage yeasts.

Şalgam is a traditional drink produced via the lactic-acid fermentation of vegetables (black carrot and turnip), sourdough, and bulgur flour; with rock salt also added. During storage, an additional yeast-mediated fermentation can occur, causing changes in organoleptic properties, as evidenced by the microbe-mediated release of gases. Here, we characterise şalgam as a microbial habitat, identify the yeasts that cause spoilage, and characterise yeast-induced changes of the şalgam.

A Single Center Experience of Special Cases: Isolated Adrenal Myelolipoma and Adrenocortical Adenoma with Myelolipomatous Component.

Objective: Isolated adrenal myelolipoma (IAM) is an uncommon, nonfunctioning tumour of the adrenal gland, primarily composed of adipose tissue and hematopoietic trilinear cells. The etiopathogenesis and clinical relevance of this neoplasm remain poorly understood. However, similar myelolipomatous alterations can also occur within adrenocortical adenomas.

The evaluation of black carrot, green cabbage, grape, and apple juices as substrates for the production of functional water kefir-like beverages.

Water kefir (WK) is a nondairy probiotic beverage produced using water kefir grains that are highly adaptable to diverse food substrates. Fruit and vegetables have been used more in beverage production in recent years due to their plentiful nutritional qualities. In this context, the aim of this study is to develop fruit-vegetable juice-based beverages fermented with WK grains in order to produce novel, non-dairy, probiotic water kefir-like beverages (W-KLBs) with improved sensory and nutritional properties.

Novel formulations ameliorate osteoarthritis in rats by inhibiting inflammation and oxidative stress.

The study tested new oral plant-based formulations (F) on rats with monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced osteoarthritis, measuring inflammation, antioxidant levels, paw size, stride, and analyzing knee joint images. Fifty-six female Sprague Dawley rats were allocated into 8 groups: (1) Control, (2) MIA (OA induced with MIA), (3) MIA + F1 [curcuminoids+gingerols+acetyl-11-keto-β boswellic acid (AKBA)], (4) MIA + F2 (curcuminoids+Withania glycosides+AKBA), (5) MIA + F3 (curcuminoids+total withanolides+AKBA), (6) MIA + F4 (curcuminoids, AKBA), (7) MIA + UCII (type II collagen), and (8) MIA + GCHON (Glucosamine Chondroitin). Treatments F1 to F4 reduced right joint diameter and improved stride length and paw area in OA rats.

A Study on the Views and Thoughts of Dog Owners in Türkiye on Animal Welfare.

The aim of the present study was to determine the views and thoughts of dog owners in Türkiye on animal welfare. The research material consisted of data obtained from face-to-face surveys with 172 randomly selected dog owners. Half of the dog owners (54,7 %) were aware of the concept of animal welfare, and almost two-thirds (61,6 %) organized their dogs' living spaces according to animal welfare principles.

Interstitial Lung Disease in Primary Sjögren's Syndrome: Risk factors for occurrence and radiographic progression.

Objectives: The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS)- interstitial lung disease (ILD) patients and compare them to those of pSS patients without ILD in the tertiary pSS-ILD cohort to evaluate potential risk factors for ILD occurrence and disease progression.

Methods: Patients followed up who met the 2016 American College of Rheumatology-European League Against Rheumatism classification criteria for pSS were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were grouped as those with ILD and those without ILD according to medical records.

Obesity might not alter tofacitinib drug survival in rheumatoid arthritis patients.

Introduction: Obese rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients often show reduced responses to traditional treatments, including TNF inhibitors (TNFi). Considering the different mechanisms of action it is important to evaluate the efficacy of tofacitinib in obese patients. This study aims to explore the impact of obesity on the drug survival of tofacitinib in RA patients.

Tomographic, Biomechanical, and Confocal Microscopic Changes in Cornea in Chronic Gout Disease.

Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the tomographic, biomechanical, and confocal microscopic (IVCM) effects of chronic gout disease on human cornea.

Methods: This prospective study included 60 eyes of 30 participants with chronic gout disease and 60 eyes of 30 healthy controls. Corneal thickness, keratometry (K) readings, and corneal aberrations were measured with Sirius 3 D corneal tomography system (Sirius, CSO, Italy).

A Comparison of the First 60 Enucleation Cases Using a Thulium Fiber Laser without a Mentor to a Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) and Open Prostatectomy, and the Learning Curve.

: In the surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), laser enucleation of the prostate is recommended as an alternative to transurethral resection (TURP) and open prostatectomy (OP). The thulium fiber laser, with its superficial penetration depth, can offer a rapid learning process by causing less heat injury and capsule damage. This study compares the first 60 cases of an endourologist performing thulium fiber enucleation of the prostate (ThuFLEP) without a mentor to the results of OP and TURP performed by experienced surgeons.

Prognostic Value of Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index for Cardiovascular and Kidney Outcomes: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: Arterial stiffness causes cardiovascular disease and target-organ damage. Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity is regarded as a standard arterial stiffness metric. However, the prognostic value of cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), which is mathematically corrected for blood pressure, remains understudied.

Adsorptive removal of anticarcinogen pazopanib from aqueous solutions using activated carbon: isotherm, kinetic and thermodynamic studies.

Pazopanib, which is dangerous for aquatic environments due to its toxic and bioaccumulation potential, has been detected at different concentrations in oncology hospital wastewater, sewage, and surface waters. This study aimed to remove pazopanib from wastewater by activated carbon adsorption technique. The effect of the main variables such as initial concentration, pH of pazopanib solution, adsorbent dose, contact time of the phases, and temperature on the adsorption process was evaluated and the optimum adsorption conditions were determined.

Clinical management of intestinal malrotation in different age groups.

Purpose: Intestinal malrotation, characterized by abnormal intestinal positioning, can lead to severe complications like volvulus and internal hernias, especially in neonates and children. Our aim was to evaluate the diagnostic methods, treatment results and postoperative follow-up of pediatric patients treated for intestinal malrotation.

Methods: This retrospective study reviewed medical records of pediatric patients who underwent surgery for intestinal malrotation between January 2013 and January 2022.

Synthesis of biocompatible Ti-6Al-4V composite reinforced with ZrO and bioceramic produced by powder metallurgy: Morphological, structural, and biocompatibility analysis.

In this experimental study, the initial phase involved preparing composite structures with various mix ratios using the Ti-6Al-4V alloy, widely used in clinical applications, in conjunction with ZrO and hydroxyapatite (HA) synthesized via the precipitation method, employing powder metallurgy techniques. Subsequently, the microstructures of the resultant hybrid composite materials were imaged, and x-ray diffraction (XRD) phase analyses were conducted. In the final phase of the experimental work, tests were performed to determine the biocompatibility properties of the hybrid composites.

Theory of Moiré Magnetism and Multidomain Spin Textures in Twisted Mott Insulator-Semimetal Heterobilayers.

Motivated by the recent experimental developments in van der Waals heterostructures, we investigate the emergent magnetism in Mott insulator-semimetal moiré superlattices by deriving effective spin models and exploring their phase diagram by Monte Carlo simulations. Our analysis indicates that the stacking-dependent interlayer Kondo interaction can give rise to different types of magnetic order, forming domains within the moiré unit cell. In particular, we find that the AB (AA) stacking regions tend to order (anti)ferromagnetically for an extended range of parameters.
