Objective: In the context of acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema (ACPE), a frequently encountered medical emergency associated with high early mortality rates, there is a need to predict short-term outcomes for risk stratification. Our aim was to derive and validate a model, a simple clinical scoring system using baseline vital signs, clinical and presenting characteristics, and readily available laboratory tests, that allows accurate prediction of short-term mortality in individuals experiencing ACPE.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 1088 patients with ACPE from six health centers.

This study was aimed to identify the most frequently observed pathogens in uncomplicated urinary tract infections from outpatient urinary isolates obtained across seven different geographical regions in Türkiye and to determine whether the antibiotic resistance rates of these pathogens differ significantly between these regions. The study included patients aged 18 to 65 years who were diagnosed with uncomplicated urinary tract infections and had positive urine cultures from March 2021 to August 2022, across 37 different centers in Türkiye. The participating centers were selected based on their use of the disk diffusion method, in line with the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) guidelines, to ensure standardization of urine culture data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the superficial palmar branch of the radial artery (SUPBRA) to improve techniques for reconstructing palmar skin, focusing on its anatomy and harvesting methods.
  • Researchers dissected 19 male hand specimens to gather detailed anatomical data, including dimensions and positions of key structures related to SUPBRA, analyzing how best to utilize this flap in reconstruction efforts.
  • Results indicated that the SUPBRA has adequate dimensions for viability in surgical applications, with specific measurements and the identification of critical vascular contributions that ensure successful use in cases of hand injury.

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color change of resin composites with different filler contents subjected to immersion in different solutions, brushing, and thermal aging procedures. A total of 320 samples were prepared using 4 different flowable and 4 different conventional resin composites (n = 40). The samples were separated into 4 subgroups according to the solution to be used (wine, coffee, tea, or distilled water) and then immersed in the solutions for 12 days.

Objective: The number of patients during disastrous conditions was high, and triage is essential. In chaotic circumstances, orthopedic surgeons can also struggle with patient selection, not only for surgical selection but also for the necessity of hospitalization. So, the performance of the Injury Severity Score, New Injury Severity Score, and Trauma and Injury Severity Score was compared in victims who were struck under the wreckage and had fractures due to the Kahramanmaras Earthquake.

Carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning is a common occurrence, typically resulting from exposure to CO emissions in enclosed spaces. CO is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas. In this case report, we present a 52-year-old male patient who developed crush syndrome and acute kidney injury following carbon monoxide (CO) intoxication.

Background: Phase 2 trials are instrumental for designing definitive efficacy trials or attaining accelerated approval. However, high attrition of drug candidates in phase 2 raises questions about their supporting evidence.

Methods: We developed a typology of supporting evidence for phase 2 cancer trials.

Resource-intensive motion capture (mocap) systems challenge predictive deep learning applications, requiring large and diverse datasets. We tackled this by modifying generative adversarial networks (GANs) into conditional GANs (cGANs) that can generate diverse mocap data, including 15 marker trajectories, lower limb joint angles, and 3D ground reaction forces (GRFs), based on specified subject and gait characteristics. The cGAN comprised 1) an encoder compressing mocap data to a latent vector, 2) a decoder reconstructing the mocap data from the latent vector with specific conditions and 3) a discriminator distinguishing random vectors with conditions from encoded latent vectors with conditions.

Although metallic implants provide most of the required properties for bone-related applications, especially orthopedic implants, insufficient osseointegration, which may lead to loosening of the implant or prolonged healing time, is still an issue to be resolved. Osseointegration can be improved via application of various surface treatments on the metal surface. The current study focuses on a novel surface microdeformation method, which enables the formation of controlled surface patterns of various parameters.

Article Synopsis
  • This study explores the use of ZnO and Ni-doped ZnO catalysts made from okra stalks for breaking down the dye Procion Red MX-5B (PRM) through photocatalysis.
  • It examines how different factors like hydrogen peroxide concentration, amount of catalyst, nickel doping, initial dye concentration, and pH affect the degradation efficiency.
  • The research finds that under optimal conditions, the Ni-doped ZnO catalyst achieves a 98.08% degradation rate, outperforming the ZnO catalyst's 82.99%, highlighting their effectiveness in removing organic pollutants.

  • The study looked at the variety of bacteria on chicken carcasses and in the area around them during different stages of the slaughter process.
  • Researchers collected samples from different points at a chicken processing plant in Turkey over a few months to see how bacterial populations changed.
  • They found that bacteria increased after chilling and storage, and that the most bacteria were on the chicken after it was stored, which can help identify where contamination might happen during slaughtering.

In this study, thiazole derivatives containing sulphonamide, amide, and phenyl amino groups were synthesized to protect the free amino groups of 5-methyl-4-phenyl-2-aminothiazole and 4-phenyl-2-aminothiazole. Halogenated reactions of N-protected thiazole derivatives have been investigated. LCMS, FT-IR, H NMR, and C NMR spectroscopy techniques were used to elucidate the structures of the synthesized compounds.

Background: Peritoneal fibrosis (PF) is a major, persistent complication of prolonged peritoneal dialysis that eventually leads to peritoneal ultrafiltration failure and termination of peritoneal dialysis. Prolonged exposure to high glucose concentrations, degradation products, uremic toxins, and episodes of peritonitis can cause some changes in the peritoneal membrane, resulting in intraperitoneal inflammation and PF, leading to failure of ultrafiltration and dialysis. CA-125 can be used as a biomarker of peritoneal mesothelial cell count in the peritoneal dialysate and for monitoring cell count in PD patients.
