Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is a promising noninvasive alternative to epidural stimulation. However, further studies are needed to clarify how tSCS affects postural control. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of transcutaneous cervical spinal cord stimulation on postural stability in healthy participants via computerized stabilization.

Alterations to peritubular capillary structure in a rat model of kidney interstitial fibrosis: Implications for oxygen diffusion.

Fibrosis and loss of functional capillary surface area may contribute to renal tissue hypoxia in a range of kidney diseases. However, there is limited quantitative information on the impact of kidney disease on the barriers to oxygen diffusion from cortical peritubular capillaries (PTCs) to kidney epithelial tubules. Here, we used stereological methods to quantify changes in total cortical PTC length and surface area, PTC length and surface densities, and diffusion distances between PTCs and kidney tubules in adenine-induced kidney injury.

A deep 96-well plate RBC storage platform for high-throughput screening of novel storage solutions.

Red blood cell (RBC) storage solutions, also known as additive solutions (ASs), first developed in the 1970s, enable extended storage of RBCs. Unfortunately, the advancements in this field have been limited, due to labor intensive and time-consuming serial and testing, coupled with very high commercialization hurdles. This study examines the utility of deep 96-well plates for preliminary screenings of novel ASs through comparison of RBC storage with the standard PVC bags in terms of hemolysis and ATP levels, under both normoxic (N) and hypoxic/hypocapnic (H) storage conditions.

High-Throughput Metabolomics Platform for the Rapid Data-Driven Development of Novel Additive Solutions for Blood Storage.

Red blood cell transfusion is a life-saving intervention, and storage is a logistic necessity to make ~110 million units available for transfusion every year worldwide. However, storage in the blood bank is associated with a progressive metabolic decline, which correlates with the accumulation of morphological lesions, increased intra- and extra-vascular hemolysis upon transfusion, and altered oxygen binding/off-loading kinetics. Prior to storage, red blood cells are suspended in nutrient formulations known as additive solutions to prolong cellular viability.

Is there "smoke without fire"? Applying the theory of values to the study of motivational aspects of ethnic stereotypes: The case of Jewish stereotypes in Russia.

Few studies have examined to what extent commonly held stereotypes reflect real intergroup differences in motivational goals. Taking a values perspective (Schwartz et al., 2012), the study examines value preferences among Jews and Russians in Russia, to assess the extent to which commonly held stereotypes reflect values of group members.

The paper describes a clinical and anatomical case of partial trisomy of the long arm of 17 chromosome in a baby aged 1 month and 4 days with the karyotype 46,XY, dup(17)(q21q24) from a dichorionic diamniotic twin born after in vitro fertilization. Intrahepatic bile duct hyperplasia was first detected in the patient with this chromosomal abnormality. Histological and immunohistochemical examinations of the liver were conducted using antibodies to Ki-67, CK-pan, CK8, CK 18, Vim, SMA, CD31, CD34, HER-2/neu.

Motivational goals, group identifications, and psychosocial adjustment of returning migrants: The case of Jews returning to Russia.

The present study investigated the motivational goals, group identifications, and psychosocial adjustment of Jews who returned to Russia after emigrating from the republics of the Former Soviet Union to different countries (n = 151). To gain a deeper understanding of these returning migrants, their traits were compared with those of Jews living in Russia who did not emigrate (n = 935). Compared to locals, returnees reported a higher preference for the openness to change and self-enhancement values and a lower preference for the conservation values; there was no difference in the self-transcendence values.

[Imitation model of 90Sr behaviour in the soil and stand of pine forest].

The algorithm of display of 90Sr behaviour mechanisms in forest ecosystems by method of imitating modeling is developed. Distinctive features of algorithm: the 90Sr contents in vegetation is subdivided into two parts (outside and internal pollution), which dynamics is considered separately; dynamics of a radionuclide is considered in connection with dynamics of organic substance; it is supposed, that 90Sr behaviour in plants is similar to Ca behaviour; the biological availability 90Sr contained in a soil, is integrated function of time and physico-chemical properties of the given soil. On the basis of offered algorithm the model is constructed which is used for realization of a number of numerical experiments, including reconstruction of a situation of pollution of forest ecosystem on grey forest soils in result of Kyshtym accident.

We tested the hypothesis that wheat gluten is not only a target of adaptive immunity, but also modulates the function of APC. Dendritic cells (DC) derived from the bone marrow of BALB/c mice were exposed to chymotrypsin-treated wheat gluten.

The stress-activated protein kinase c-Jun NH2-terminal kinase (JNK) is a central signal for interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta)-induced apoptosis in insulin-producing beta-cells. The cell-permeable peptide inhibitor of JNK (JNKI1), that introduces the JNK binding domain (JBD) of the scaffold protein islet-brain 1 (IB1) inside cells, effectively prevents beta-cell death caused by this cytokine. To define the molecular targets of JNK involved in cytokine-induced beta-cell apoptosis we investigated whether JNKI1 or stable expression of JBD affected the expression of selected pro- and anti-apoptotic genes induced in rat (RIN-5AH-T2B) and mouse (betaTC3) insulinoma cells exposed to IL-1beta.

In the present study, we characterized the effects of human HSP60 maturation, cytokine release, and T cell-activating capacity of bone marrow-derived dendritic cells (DC). Furthermore, we analyzed HSP60-induced signal transduction in DC.

Glutathione depletion inhibits IL-1 beta-stimulated nitric oxide production by reducing inducible nitric oxide synthase gene expression.

L-buthionine-S,R-sulfoximine (BSO), an inhibitor of GSH synthesis, decreased IL-1 beta-induced nitrite release in rat islets and purified rat beta cells, nitrite formation and iNOS gene promoter activity in insulinoma cells, and iNOS mRNA expression in rat islets. The thiol depletor diethyl maleate (DEM) and an inhibitor of glutathione reductase 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea (BCNU) reduced IL-1 beta-stimulated nitrite release in islets. We conclude that GSH regulates IL-1 beta-induced NO production in islets, purified beta cells and insulinoma cells by modulation of iNOS gene expression.

[The rheological properties of the blood in patients with tick-borne typhus].

Rheological characteristics of blood were studied in 50 patients with north Asian tick typhoid varying in severity and duration. In addition to standard diagnosis--verification tests, blood macrorheological and microrheological examinations were made (blood viscosity, hematocrit and red cell deformability and aggregation, respectively). It was found that both in the acute disease and recovery there were changes in blood and plasma viscosity red cell hardness.
