Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is an autosomal recessive multisystem disorder showing phenotypic heterogeneity giving rise to complex comorbidities. The most 'visible' signs are dermatological; however, these may be subtle and hidden from the view of an affected individual. Ophthalmic signs can be easily missed, and here we highlight the importance of a multisystem assessment.

Background: Routine hospital eye services (HES) across the National health service (NHS), and diabetic eye screening (DES) in Scotland were paused during the COVID-19 lockdown in March 2020. Alternate pathways for managing acute ophthalmic pathology were devised in NHS Grampian covering the North-East of Scotland. Emergency eye treatment centres (EETC) manned by community optometrists were set up to treat and triage referrals to HES.

Background: The demand for cataract surgery is expected to increase by 25% in the next 10 years as the result of our ageing population.
