Bio-Stimulated Surface Healing of Historical and Compatible Conservation Mortars.

The main focus of this research was the bio-stimulated healing of cracks in lime mortar samples (historical and newly designed). The investigation started from comprehensive characterisation of historical mortars, while in the next stage a compatible conservation mortar was designed and characterised, with special attention given to the contact zone formation between original and conservation mortars. The next step was the design of a bio-stimulating crack-sealing agent, a two-component liquid system: bacteria culture DSM 33 and nutrients.

Cognitive and socio-cognitive functioning of chronic non-medical prescription opioid users.

Rationale: Non-medical prescription opioid use (NMPOU) has become a major public health issue in the USA and is also increasing in Europe. However, little is known about neuropsychological associations of NMPOU-specifically regarding social cognition, which is essential for social functioning and treatability of opioid dependence. Previous studies with heroin users and opioid-substituted patients reported deficits in various cognitive functions, but these results are likely confounded by comorbid physical and psychiatric diseases, overdose-associated hypoxia, and adulteration of street heroin.

Prevalence of Escherichia coli Resistant to Beta-Lactam Antibiotics among Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Urinary Tract Infection.

Urinary tract infection (UTI), which is typically caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), is an insufficiently recognized co-morbidity among patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Adequate treatment can be complicated by resistance of the causative pathogen to beta-lactam antibiotics, which often produce beta-lactamase enzymes that destroy the antibiotic.

Quality of life of elderly people living in a retirement home.

Background/aim: The World Health Organization (WHO) identified four broad domains as being universally relevant to the quality of life, namely physical, and psychological health, social relationships, and environment. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and quality of life of old people.

Methods: The World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF) was used to assess quality of life on a random sample of 200 people aged 60 years and over who lived in the Retirement Home in Novi Sad.

Economic analysis of ticagrelor therapy from a U.S. perspective: results from the PLATO study.

Background: Based on results of the PLATO (Platelet Inhibition and Patient Outcomes) trial comparing ticagrelor with clopidogrel therapy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved ticagrelor in 2011 for reducing thrombotic cardiovascular events in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with the proviso that it be taken with low-dose aspirin.

Ticagrelor treatment in patients with acute coronary syndrome is cost-effective in Sweden and Denmark.

Objectives: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of treating patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) for 12 months with ticagrelor compared with generic clopidogrel in Sweden and Denmark.

Event rates, healthcare resource use, and health-related quality of life during 12 months of therapy were estimated from the PLATelet inhibition and patient Outcomes (PLATO) trial.

Modulation of ribosomal frameshifting frequency and its effect on the replication of Rous sarcoma virus.

Programmed -1 ribosomal frameshifting is widely used in the expression of RNA virus replicases and represents a potential target for antiviral intervention. There is interest in determining the extent to which frameshifting efficiency can be modulated before virus replication is compromised, and we have addressed this question using the alpharetrovirus Rous sarcoma virus (RSV) as a model system. In RSV, frameshifting is essential in the production of the Gag-Pol polyprotein from the overlapping gag and pol coding sequences.

Association between obesity and socioeconomic factors and lifestyle.

Background/aim: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing at an alarming rate and it is a manifestation of the epidemics of a sedentary lifestyle and excessive energy intake. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in the population of the Province of Vojvodina, Serbia, and to examine the association between obesity and socioeconomic and lifestyle factors.

Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted in the Province of Vojvodina in 2006 involved 3 854 participants aged 20 years and over (1 831 men and 2 023 women).

Analysis of cutaneous melanoma in the province of Vojvodina.

Purpose: To analyse the incidence and mortality of melanoma in the province of Vojvodina - the north part of Serbia- from the epidemiologic and clinical point of view.

Patients And Methods: In this retrospective study, we used databases of the Cancer Registry of Vojvodina, Oncology Institute of Vojvodina in Sremska Kamenica; Clinical Centre of Vojvodina in Novi Sad; Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina in Novi Sad; and Institute of Public Health of Serbia in Belgrade.

Results: The incidence and mortality of melanoma in Vojvodina is permanently increasing over the last three decades.

Environmental factors related to the induction of beta-cell autoantibodies in 1-yr-old healthy children.

We studied environmental risk factors which might contribute to the development of beta-cell autoantibodies in healthy children. Here, we investigated 6000 randomly selected children from the large All Babies in Southeast Sweden (ABIS) cohort, including 17 055 newborns recruited between 1997 and 1999. Questionnaires at birth and at 1 yr of age and the levels of autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase (GADA) and autoantibodies to tyrosine phosphatase (IA-2A) at 1 yr of age were analyzed.

Comparison of a shiga toxin enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and two types of PCR for detection of shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli in human stool specimens.

Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) is a major cause of sporadic cases of disease as well as serious outbreaks worldwide. The spectrum of illnesses includes mild nonbloody diarrhea, hemorrhagic colitis, and hemolytic-uremic syndrome. STEC produces one or more Stxs, which are subdivided into two major classes, Stx1 and Stx2.

Ureaplasma urealyticum osteomyelitis in a very low birth weight infant.

We are reporting on a very low birth weight male infant with osteomyelitis of the right femur during blood stream infection with Ureaplasma urealyticum. After previously recognized pulmonary and central nervous system infections, our case description link U. urealyticum to bone disease, widening the spectrum of pathologic conditions in neonates due to this agents.

Ureaplasma urealyticum infection in newborns: three case reports.

We report three newborns with different manifestations of Ureaplasma urealyticum infection; a term newborn with acute neonatal pneumonia and two very low birth weight infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia and osteomyelitis of the femur, respectively. The association of U. urealyticum with acute and chronic respiratory disease in term and preterm newborns has recently been reported.

[Hemorrhagic disease of the newborn].

The authors present 16 patients with the idiopathic forms of hemorrhagic disease in newborns, none of which, after birth, having prophylactically received K-vitamin. Seven of them had an early form, four a classical form, and five a late form of hemorrhagic disease. All of them were born at term, four were female and 12 male newborns.

[Massive adrenal hemorrhage in a neonate due to neuroblastoma].

A newborn with symptoms of massive adrenal hemorrhage is presented. The cause was a unilateral neuroblastoma of the adrenal gland, bringing about severe anemia and hemorrhagic shock. The suspicion of a tumor of the adrenal gland was confirmed by infusion urography, ultrasound examination of the kidney, and the increased amount of vanillymandelic acid in the urine.
