Atherosclerosis is by far the leading cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with end stage renal disease undergoing chronic hemodialysis (HD). Vascular endothelial cell adhesion molecules like the intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and the vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) are involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Their soluble forms (sICAM-1, sVCAM-1) are considered potential serum markers of endothelial activation and atherosclerosis.
