We report a patient who sustained an AFF (Atypical femoral fractures) after 15 years of bisphosphonate treatment. DEXA scans can be utilized to identify early evidence of AFF in asymptomatic patients up to 9 years before the development of an AFF.

Fragility-related pertrochanteric fractures have become a significant public health concern, with a rising incidence attributed to the expanding elderly demographic. Assessing patient-reported health-related quality of life (HRQoL), mortality, and factors correlated with them serves as a crucial metric in evaluating the effectiveness of hip fracture surgery. In a single-center retrospective study, 259 patients underwent surgical treatment with a cephalomedullary nail, with a mean follow-up of 21.

Lisfranc injuries result when the bones or ligaments that support the midfoot are torn, and the classifications of these injuries are based on the coronal displacement of the metatarsals. On the saggital plane, the first metatarsal is usually dorsally dislocated due to dorsal ligament weakness. We present a case report of a 29-year-old woman who sustained a Lisfranc injury of her right foot with plantar subluxation of the first metatarsal, which was treated with open reduction and internal fixation of the first metatarsal and fusion of the second metatarsal.

Background: Scapula fractures occur in the setting of high-energy trauma. Operative treatment of complex intra-articular scapular fractures can result in adequate surgical and functional outcomes.

Materials And Methods: Twenty-seven patients with complex, displaced intra-articular scapular fractures with or without involvement of the scapular body, were treated operatively in a single trauma center between 2010 and 2021.

Introduction: The Monteggia fracture is a fracture to the proximal third of ulna associated with a radial head dislocation. Although this is well described and classified in adults, it is uncommon in children. Identifying growth plate trauma and subsequent surgical management are of critical importance.

Simultaneous bilateral femoral neck fractures represent a rare entity and are usually associated with bone metabolism disorders, chronic steroid treatment, epileptic convulsions, or high-energy trauma. Here we report a case of bilateral femoral neck fracture in a patient with severe vitamin D deficiency following an epileptic seizure. Anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the pelvis revealed Garden III femoral neck fractures on both hips.

We present a case of an elderly and comorbid patient who was scheduled to undergo a hip fracture fixation using an intramedullary nail. Unfortunately, this was delayed by 3 weeks as the patient was unfit to undergo this procedure. She was placed onto the traction table and intraoperatively sustained a superior and inferior pubic rami fracture while attempting reduction on the traction table.

Deficits of psychosocial functioning are a robust finding in schizophrenia. Research on social cognition may open a new avenue for the development of effective interventions. As a correlate of social perceptive information processing deficits, schizophrenia patients (SZP) show deviant gaze behavior (GB) while viewing emotional faces.

Purpose: To compare the measured resection technique and the gap balancing technique for correction of the femoral rotational alignment.

Methods: 57 women and 6 men (mean age, 70 years) with end-stage osteoarthritis and <15º malalignment and <10º flexion contracture of the knee underwent primary total knee arthroplasty through the medial approach using the measured resection technique (n=34) or the gap balancing technique (n=29). Femoral rotational alignment was evaluated before and 7 days after surgery using computed tomography by referencing the 2 posterior condyles to the transepicondylar axis.

Background: In order to successfully implement early recognition and intervention services in psychiatry, it is crucial to improve the attention to and recognition of severe mental disorders and to establish low threshold services that are available at short notice for diagnostic and treatment procedures.

Material And Methods: For this inventory survey study, questionnaires regarding the presence and type of early recognition services for psychoses and bipolar disorders were sent separately to German psychiatric hospitals by mail in September and October 2012. Additionally, an internet search and telephone inquiries as well as an alignment of responses from the two surveys and with network lists from published and ongoing early recognition studies were performed.

Aim: Personality dimensions are frequently abnormal in psychosis. We examined if these abnormalities form a personality profile that is characteristic for patients symptomatically at risk of psychosis.

Methods: Four higher order personality dimensions were assessed in 104 at-risk patients, 67 clinical and 97 healthy controls with the 'Dimensional Assessment of Personality Pathology', and analysed by two-step cluster procedure to detect personality profiles.

Prevention is currently regarded a promising strategy for fighting the unfavorable consequences of psychosis. Yet, for the error probability inherent in any predictive approach, benefits and costs must be carefully weighed against each other. False attribution of risk may unnecessarily provoke stress and anxiety, and lead to unwarranted intervention exposure.

Over the last couple of decades, the treatment of psychoses has much advanced; yet, despite all progress, the individual and societal burden associated with psychosis and particularly schizophrenia has largely remained unchanged. Therefore, much hope is currently placed on indicated prevention as a mean to fight these burdens before they set in. Though the number of studies investigating pharmacological interventions is still limited, encouraging results have been reported from the pioneering trials, despite several methodological limitations.

A bilateral talar body fracture-dislocation in a 29-year-old multitrauma patient is presented. There was a comminuted fracture associated with an ankle, subtalar and talonavicular subluxation on the right lower limb and an open fracture with complete dislocation of the body of talus on the left side. We performed a minimal invasive reduction and stabilization of the fractures with the use of K-wires, due to severe contamination of the wounds and the patient's poor general condition.

A case of spontaneous recurrent hemarthrosis--due to developed hypertrophied synovium--after total knee arthroplasty is reported. The patient was successfully treated with radiosynovectomy. The first hemorrhage occurred 18 months after the total knee arthroplasty.

Dislocation of the proximal tibiofibular joint is an unusual injury. We report a patient, who developed inferior proximal tibiofibular dislocation after a severe motorcycle accident. The dislocation was associated with avulsion of the leg, fractures of the fibula and the ankle and neurovascular lesions.

Chest wall desmoid tumors (DT) are rare pathologic entities with microscopic features similar to, or undistinguishable from, fibromas or fibrosarcomas. From 1996 to 2001, four patients with DT were surgically managed in our department. Their ages ranged from 27 years to 43 years (mean 32.

A case of painful shoulder in a 42-year old right-hand dominant Caucasian female due to degeneration of the coracoclavicular joint is described. The pain was aggravated by weight lifting. The diagnosis was confirmed radiographically with simple plain films and clinically by the injection of local anaesthetic (xylocaine 2%) that lead to the exclusion of any other concomitant pathology of the acromioclavicular joint and the anterior subacromial space.

We present the clinical results of total knee replacement (TKR) in 133 patients who had two or more major joints of the lower limbs replaced, and compare them to the outcome in 406 patients with an isolated TKR. 383 patients had osteoarthritis (OA) and 136 had rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and these were assessed separately. A meniscal bearing prosthesis was used.

We randomized prospectively 144 patients, undergoing elective coronary artery bypass surgery, to either early or to routine extubation [mechanical ventilatory support for 4-7 h (Group A), or 8-14 h (Group B)]. Anaesthesia was modified for both groups. The groups were well matched in terms of sex, age, NYHA class, preoperative left ventricular ejection fraction, bypass time and aortic cross-clamp time, number of grafts used, and blood units transfused.
