Plunging ranulas are rare retention pseudocysts of the major salivary glands, most often of the sublingual gland, and usually occur in individuals from the first to the sixth decade of life with female predominance. Given their similar location and physical and imaging characteristics to thyroglossal cysts, distinguishing the two lesions is often a differential diagnostic dilemma even for the experienced physician. This case report presents a 42-year-old man for whom a preliminary diagnosis of a thyroglossal duct cyst was made based on a physical examination.

Introduction Despite the constant development of medicine and the increasing accessibility to medical specialists, in the first quarter of the 21 century, odontogenic abscesses remain one of the leading causes of emergency hospitalization in maxillofacial surgery clinics. Because of the serious and lethal complications that this type of suppurative infection can lead to if not treated promptly, there is a need for constant updating of the knowledge of its origin, which is precisely what is addressed in this original article. Materials and methods It reports on a retrospective study conducted over a five-year period (2018-2023), during which 705 patients aged 18 years and older with a confirmed diagnosis of odontogenic soft tissue abscess of the head and neck underwent emergency surgery.

Schwannomas are not uncommon in the maxillofacial region; however, those with intraoral localization and, in particular, the hard palate are among the least frequently described. In the current case report, we present a 17-year-old girl with a histologically verified schwannoma of the hard palate on the right, originating from the right greater palatine nerve. In her case, despite the lysis of the palatine bone from the tumor compression, the disease is asymptomatic, causing only a weak sensation of local discomfort.

Objectives: Symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) leads to functional impairment and pain. While radiologic characterization of the morphological stenosis grade can aid in the diagnosis, it may not always correlate with patient symptoms. Artificial intelligence (AI) may diagnose symptomatic LSS in patients solely based on self-reported history questionnaires.

First introduced in 1954, polyurethane foams rapidly became popular because of light weight, high chemical stability, and outstanding sound and thermal insulation properties. Currently, polyurethane foam is widely applied in industrial and household products. Despite tremendous progress in the development of various formulations of versatile foams, their use is hindered due to high flammability.

The issues of laboratory diagnostics have been relevant since the first days of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and play a key role in the fight against the spread of a new coronavirus infection. A direct method for the etiological diagnosis of the causative agent of COVID-19 is the detection of SARS-CoV-2 RNA using the nucleic acid amplification method. In the context of a pandemic and the mass appeal of patients for medical care, the issues of ensuring the quality of ongoing molecular biological studies at all stages (preanalytical, analytical, postanalytical) become the most relevant.

In this paper we describe the properties of the crystal of guanylurea hydrogen phosphate (NH[Formula: see text])[Formula: see text]CNHCO(NH[Formula: see text])H[Formula: see text]PO[Formula: see text] (GUHP) and propose its application in terahertz photonics and optoelectronics. GUHP crystal has a wide window of transparency and a high optical threshold in the visible and NIR spectral regions and narrow absorption bands in the terahertz frequency range. The spectral characteristics of absorption and refraction in the THz range were found to be strongly dependent on crystal temperature and orientation.

Digital care management programs can reduce health care costs and improve quality of care. However, it is unclear how to target patients who are most likely to benefit from these programs ex ante, a shortcoming of current "risk score"-based approaches across many interventions. This study explores a framework to define impactability by using machine learning (ML) models to identify those patients most likely to benefit from a digital health intervention for care management.

This paper describes a novel Boundary Source Method (BSM) applied to the vector calculation of electromagnetic fields from a surface defined by the interface between homogenous, isotropic media. In this way, the reflected and transmitted fields are represented as an expansion of the electric fields generated by a basis of orthogonal electric and magnetic dipole sources that are tangential to, and evenly distributed over the surface of interest. The dipole moments required to generate these fields are then calculated according to the extinction theorem of Ewald and Oseen applied at control points situated at either side of the boundary.

Subwavelength hole array (HA) metasurfaces support the so-called extraordinary optical transmission (EOT) resonance that has already been exploited for sensing. In this work, we demonstrate the superior performance of a different resonant regime of HA metasurfaces called anomalous EOT, by doing a thorough numerical and experimental study of its ability in thin-film label-free sensing applications in the terahertz (THz) band. A comprehensive analysis using both the regular and anomalous EOT resonances is done by depositing thin layers of dielectric analyte slabs of different thicknesses on the structures in different scenarios.
