148 patients with trigeminal neuralgia, odontogenic neuropathies of the alveolar nerves, neuropathy of the main trigeminal nerves and their sensitive branches, neuropathic complications after alcoholization received individually selected physiotherapy in each prosopalgia in acute and subacute period. Adequate choice of physical factors and physiotherapy is dependent on careful examination of the patient with consideration of topical and pathogenetic features of the disease.

The trial of apex-locator application for improvement of endodontic management of root canals of a tooth as well as of ultratonotherapy in 120 patients aged 20-40 years with chronic granulomatous and granulating periodontitis has proved that ultratonotherapy relieves inflammation and stimulates regeneration of bone tissue.

90 patients with periodontitis have received peloid therapy. Mineral mud from Lake Goreloye deposits was applied by means of a specially developed device providing good contact of the mud with the gingiva and teeth. A good clinical response was achieved.

A total of 551 children with cleft lips and 136 children with secondary deformations of the upper lip and nose were followed up after cheiloplasty. Electrostimulation of the upper lip, total UV exposure, humisol and pelloidine electrophoresis, and total massage before cheiloplasty decreased the incidence of general and local postoperative complications. Reconstructive cheiloplasty was preceded by lidase or iodine ultraphonophoresis or electrostimulation of the perioral muscles.

The role of genomic imprinting in the development of tumors with defective retinoblastoma protein function remains debatable. Disruption of either parental allele of the murine retinoblastoma (Rb) gene is sufficient for spontaneous melanotroph carcinogenesis to occur in almost all Rb+/- mice. Nevertheless, mice with a disrupted paternal Rb allele succumb to tumors faster.

Russian-Norwegian expeditions to the Kara Sea and to dumping sites in the fjords of Novaya Zemlya have taken place annually since 1992. In the fjords, dumped objects were localised with sonar and ROV equipped with underwater camera. Enhanced levels of 137Cs, 60Co, 90Sr and 239,240Pu in sediments close to dumped containers in the Abrosimov and Stepovogo fjords demonstrated that leaching from dumped material has taken place.

Genetic instability is associated with aging in many species. One of the initiating factors for genetic instability is the movement of transposable elements (TEs), which occur in all prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The hypothesis that TEs could be involved in the aging process is discussed and the correlation between aging and activity of TEs is analysed in a variety of biological systems.

Purpose: This study was designed to estimate the efficiency of the various methods used to treat familial adenomatous polyposis coli.

Methods: Three hundred ninety patients (219 males) underwent surgery for familial adenomatous polyposis coli; postoperative follow-up was from 1 to 30 years.

Results: Coloproctectomy with preservation of the anal sphincter and coloproctectomy with ileoanal pull-through procedures resulted in development of anal canal cancer in 3 (4.

Significant genetic variation in resistance to cold was detected in samples collected from a natural Drosophila population in spring, summer, and autumn. In the summer sample, phenotypic variation was determined by genetic factors; in the summer and autumn samples, exclusively by environmental factors. Flies collected in spring had the highest longevity at low temperatures.

Cryosurgical treatment of basal cell carcinomas was carried out and keratocystic cavities formed after cystectomy filled with hydroxyapatite-based biocomposites in 11 patients with the Gorlin-Goltz syndrome. Remote results of treatment are assessed. The authors emphasize that this patient population is in need of multiple-modality treatment.

A membrane stabilizing effect of endobronchial laser therapy and antioxidative drugs piracetam and solcoseril was studied in 83 patients with chronic bronchitis. Malonic dialdehyde was measured to evaluate effects of this treatment on cellular and humoral immunity, blood coagulation and lipid peroxidation. It was found that the addition of membrane stabilizers to standard therapy of chronic bronchitis lowered malonic dialdehyde concentrations while the addition of the stabilizers and endobronchial laser therapy relieved clinical symptoms earlier, improved parameters of immunity, hemostasis and lipid peroxidation.

The fluctuating asymmetry was studied according to two bilateral numeric features of chaetaxy in groups of female Citellophilus tesquorum fleas. One group included insects with the recorded gizzard block during infection with the virulent plague agent strain. The fleas with the block were characterized by considerably higher levels of fluctuating asymmetry as compared with those without fleas.

The retinoblastoma gene (RB) is the prototypic tumor suppressor. Studies to date have demonstrated cancer suppression with tumor cells reconstituted with RB ex vivo and implanted into immunodeficient mice, as well as with germline transmission of a human RB transgene into tumor-prone Rb +/- mice. To mimic the therapy of cancer more closely, spontaneous pituitary melanotroph tumors arising in immunocompetent Rb +/- mice were treated with a recombinant adenovirus carrying RB cDNA.

In spring and summer, the natural population of Drosophila studied exhibited a high level of phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity with regard to change of individual fertility with an increase of density of adult flies. From spring to autumn, the level of genotypic variation decreased. In autumn, all phenotypic variation resulted from environmental factors.

Multifactor analysis of the lomefloxacin effect on the primary immune response to T-independent bacterial antigen (vaccine EV fraction 1) and to T-dependent cellular antigen (SRBC) in mice was performed with the use of a wide range of the antibiotic concentrations and the dosage time. It was shown that lomefloxacin in the doses corresponding to the average therapeutic ones used for 3-9 days had no effect on the content of the IgG antibodies, was able to increase the level of the IgM antibodies and insignificantly lowered the concentration of the IgA antibodies.

Mutational activation of the neu (erbB-2) receptor protein tyrosine kinase gene appears to be the triggering event in the process of oncogenesis induced by N-ethyl-N-nitrosourea (EtNU) in immature Schwann cells of the rat peripheral nervous system. Subsequent loss of the wild-type neu allele may represent a critical secondary step towards malignancy. Developmentally-regulated expression of a wild-type rat neu transgene (neu cDNA under the control of the rat Po promoter) in the Schwann cells of transgenic BDIX and Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to EtNU on postnatal day 1 results in a lower incidence of early atypical proliferates in the trigeminal nerve.
