Strain-Specific Features of Primary Metabolome Characteristic for Extremotolerant/Extremophilic Cyanobacteria Under Long-Term Storage.

Cyanobacteria isolated from extreme habitats are promising in biotechnology due to their high adaptability to unfavorable environments and their specific natural products. Therefore, these organisms are stored under a reduced light supply in multiple collections worldwide. However, it remains unclear whether these strains maintain constitutively expressed primary metabolome features associated with their unique adaptations.

Developing zebrafish models of Notch-related CNS pathologies.

Notch signaling is an evolutionarily conserved cellular pathway that regulates various stem cell functions, including fate determination, differentiation, proliferation, and apoptosis. This crucial signaling mechanism also plays an important role in the brain, regulating neurogenesis, cell differentiation, and homeostasis, whereas disrupted Notch signaling is linked to various neurodegenerative diseases and brain cancers. Here, we review the central nervous system (CNS) pathologies associated with aberrant Notch signaling, and summarize the available experimental (animal) models used to study these pathologies, with a special focus on zebrafish (Danio rerio).

Trace amine signaling in zebrafish models: CNS pharmacology, behavioral regulation and translational relevance.

Tyramine, β-phenylethylamine, octopamine and other trace amines are endogenous substances recently recognized as important novel neurotransmitters in the brain. Trace amines act via multiple selective trace amine-associated receptors (TAARs) of the G protein-coupled receptor family. TAARs are expressed in various brain regions and modulate neurotransmission, neuronal excitability, adult neurogenesis, cognition, mood, locomotor activity and olfaction.

Antihistaminic drugs are widely used clinically and have long been primarily known for their use to treat severe allergic conditions caused by histamine release. Antihistaminic drugs also exert central nervous system (CNS) effects, acting as anxiolytics, hypnotics, and neuroleptics. However, these drugs also have multiple serious neuropharmacological side-effects, inducing delirium, hyperarousal, disorganized behavior, and hallucinations.
