Mitochondria from harbor a branched electron-transport chain containing a proton-pumping Complex I NADH dehydrogenase and three Type II NADH dehydrogenases (NDH-2). To investigate the physiological role, localization and substrate specificity of these enzymes, the growth of various NADH dehydrogenase knockout mutants was quantitatively characterized in shake-flask and chemostat cultures, followed by oxygen-uptake experiments with isolated mitochondria. NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreduction of the three NDH-2 were individually assessed.

Objectives: For new analyzers or tests, analytical evaluation is required before implementation in the clinical laboratory. We evaluated the novel Roche Cobas t711 analyzer with six newly developed coagulation assays: the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT), prothrombin time (PT), international normalized ratio (INR), fibrinogen, d-dimer and anti-Xa. The evaluation included imprecision experiments, method comparison with the currently used Stago STA-R Evolution, monitoring of unfractionated heparin (UFH) with aPTT, a fast centrifugation protocol to improve turn-around time, and determination of sample stability in whole blood and plasma.

Knowledge on the genetic factors important for the efficient expression of plant transporters in yeast is still very limited. Phaseolus vulgaris sucrose facilitator 1 (PvSuf1), a presumable uniporter, was an essential component in a previously published strategy aimed at increasing ATP yield in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. However, attempts to construct yeast strains in which sucrose metabolism was dependent on PvSUF1 led to slow sucrose uptake.

Background: Being a carrier of the apolipoprotein E (APOE) ε4 allele is a clear risk factor for development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). On some neurocognitive tests, there are smaller differences between carriers and noncarriers, while other tests show larger differences.

Aims: We explore whether the size of the difference between carriers and noncarriers is a function of how well the tests measure general intelligence, so whether there are Jensen effects.

Current methods for the identification and/or quantification of viral proteins in influenza virus and virosome samples suffer from long analysis times, limited protein coverage and/or low accuracy and precision. We studied and optimized capillary gel electrophoresis (CGE) in order to achieve faster and enhanced characterization and quantification of viral proteins. Sample preparation as well the composition of the gel buffer was investigated in order to achieve adequate protein separation in relatively short times.
