A wastewater surveillance program targeting a university residence hall was implemented during the spring semester 2021 as a proactive measure to avoid an outbreak of COVID-19 on campus. Over a period of 7 weeks from early February through late March 2021, wastewater originating from the residence hall was collected as grab samples 3 times per week. The single-stage biological sulfate reduction process for treatment of heavy metal laden wastewater is a promising treatment method, but the formation of metal precipitates has been suggested to be inhibitory to the activity of sulfate reducers. The present study examined the impact of copper (Cu) precipitates on anaerobic biological sulfate reduction in semi continuous stirred tank reactors (SCSTRs) at 35 ± 2 °C. The results show that Cu precipitates significantly affected the sulfate reduction process.
