Background: The inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) disk is a simple and quick method to assess the level of disability experienced by patients with IBD. It has been already translated and validated in European countries, however it was not yet translated and validated to use in Brazil.

Objective: This study was performed to translate and validate a Brazilian version of the IBD-Disk.

Prospective case series study on the use of a novel analgosedation protocol for ultrasound-guided catheterization in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Unlabelled: Critically ill newborns admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit often require a centrally inserted central catheters (CICCs) inserted by ultrasound-guided puncture of the internal jugular or brachio-cephalic vein. Achieving an appropriate level of sedation and analgesia is paramount for procedure success and patient safety, avoiding the potential risks associated with excessive deep sedation. The aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a novel protocol of sedation.

Effect of sevoflurane on serum CK-MB levels after percutaneous coronary stent placement: A prospective randomized clinical trial.

Objectives: Markers of myocardial injury, such as creatine kinase-myocardial band (CK-MB) mass, are elevated in up to 30% of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stent deployment. This elevation represents myocardial injury that can impact the patient in the long term, including the risk of death. Sevoflurane, an inhaled anesthetic, may have cardioprotective properties that benefit patients undergoing PCI.

Background: First-degree relatives of type 2 diabetics (FDR) exhibit a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes (T2D) and feature subcutaneous adipocyte hypertrophy, independent of obesity. In FDR, adipose cell abnormalities contribute to early insulin-resistance and are determined by adipocyte precursor cells (APCs) early senescence and impaired recruitment into the adipogenic pathway. Epigenetic mechanisms signal adipocyte differentiation, leading us to hypothesize that abnormal epigenetic modifications cause adipocyte dysfunction and enhance T2D risk.

Methylglyoxal Impairs the Pro-Angiogenic Ability of Mouse Adipose-Derived Stem Cells (mADSCs) via a Senescence-Associated Mechanism.

Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) play a crucial role in angiogenesis and repair of damaged tissues. However, in pathological conditions including diabetes, ADSC function is compromised. This work aims at evaluating the effect of Methylglyoxal (MGO), a product of chronic hyperglycemia, on mouse ADSCs' (mADSCs) pro-angiogenic function and the molecular mediators involved.

Search for Gamma-Ray Spectral Lines from Dark Matter Annihilation up to 100 TeV toward the Galactic Center with MAGIC.

Linelike features in TeV γ rays constitute a "smoking gun" for TeV-scale particle dark matter and new physics. Probing the Galactic Center region with ground-based Cherenkov telescopes enables the search for TeV spectral features in immediate association with a dense dark matter reservoir at a sensitivity out of reach for satellite γ-ray detectors, and direct detection and collider experiments. We report on 223 hours of observations of the Galactic Center region with the MAGIC stereoscopic telescope system reaching γ-ray energies up to 100 TeV.

Proposal of a diagnostic algorithm based on the use of pulse oximetry in obstructive sleep apnea.

Purpose: The aims of this study were to assess the cut-off values for oxygen desaturation index ≥ 3% (ODI3) to confirm obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in subjects undergoing polysomnography (PSG) and home-based respiratory polygraphy (RP), and to propose an algorithm based on pulse oximetry (PO) for initial management of patients with suspected OSA.

Methods: This was an observational, cross-sectional, retrospective study. ODI3 was used to classify subjects as healthy (no OSA = AHI < 5 or < 15 events/h) or unhealthy (OSA = AHI ≥ 5 or ≥ 15 events/h).

The Role of Cytokinome in the HNSCC Tumor Microenvironment: A Narrative Review and Our Experience.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer. In locally advanced (LA) HNSCC, a multidisciplinary approach consisting of surgery followed by chemoradiation (CRT) or definitive CRT is the mainstay of treatment. In recurrent metastatic (R/M), HNSCC immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with or without chemotherapy represent the new first-line option.

A perspective on diet, epigenetics and complex diseases: where is the field headed next?

Dietary factors can regulate epigenetic processes during life, modulating the intracellular pools of metabolites necessary for epigenetic reactions and regulating the activity of epigenetic enzymes. Their effects are strong during the prenatal life, when epigenetic patterns are written, allowing organogenesis. However, interactions between diet and the epigenome continue throughout life and likely contribute to the onset and progression of various complex diseases.

Independent association between hypoxemia and night sweats in obstructive sleep apnea.

Purpose: To assess the relationship between hypoxemia during polysomnography (PSG) and patient-reported night sweats (NS).

Methods: This retrospective observational study included adult patients who completed a standardized sleep questionnaire and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) before PSG.

Results: We included 1397 patients (41% women).

The impact of intraoperative "Nerve Monitoring" in a tertiary referral center for thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

The most fearsome complication in thyroid surgery is the temporary or definitive recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) on postoperative outcomes after thyroid and parathyroid surgery. From October 2014 to February 2016, a total of 80 consecutive patients, with high risk of RLN injuries, underwent thyroid and parathyroid surgery.

Inhibition of the angiotensin II type 2 receptor ATR is a novel therapeutic strategy for glioblastoma.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive malignant primary brain tumor with limited therapeutic options. We show that the angiotensin II (AngII) type 2 receptor (ATR) is a therapeutic target for GBM and that AngII, endogenously produced in GBM cells, promotes proliferation through ATR. We repurposed EMA401, an ATR antagonist originally developed as a peripherally restricted analgesic, for GBM and showed that it inhibits the proliferation of ATR-expressing GBM spheroids and blocks their invasiveness and angiogenic capacity.

A public decision support system for the assessment of plant disease infection risk shared by Italian regions.

Integrated pest management (IPM) practices proved to be efficient in reducing pesticide use and ensuring economic farming sustainability. Digital decision support systems (DSS) to support the adoption of IPM practices from plant protection services are required by European legislation. Available DSSs used by Italian plant protection services are heterogeneous with regards to disease forecasting models, datasets for their calibration, and level of integration in operational decision-making.

Tight control of glycemia is a major treatment goal for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Clinical studies indicated that factors other than poor glycemic control may be important in fostering T2DM progression. Increased levels of methylglyoxal (MGO) associate with complications development, but its role in the early steps of T2DM pathogenesis has not been defined.

Preliminary Results of the First 50 Patients Undergoing Sclerotherapy for II-Degree Hemorrhoidal Disease Using an Automated Device.

Background: Sclerotherapy is defined as the injection of sclerosant agents causing fibrosis and scarring of the surrounding tissue. It is currently employed for the treatment of I-III degree hemorrhoidal disease (HD). The aim of this study is to investigate the use of a new automated device for the injection of 3% polidocanol foam.

Use of bronchoscopic steam thermal ablation (BTVA) in a clinically compromised patient.

Background: Bronchoscopic lung volume reduction (BLVR) techniques improve lung function and increase exercise tolerance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and BLVR treatment is included in the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) treatment guidelines for these patients. BTVA (Intervapor Uptake Medical, Tustin, CA, USA) represents a recent therapy of this group that allows to treat sublobar areas and for this reason is used clinically compromised patients, like in this case report.

Case Presentation: In this paper we describe a case report of an 85-year-old male with severe respiratory failure and a diagnosis of emphysema presented with dyspnea and clinical worsening, despite the best medical therapy practiced.

Circulating Cytokines in Metastatic Breast Cancer Patients Select Different Prognostic Groups and Patients Who Might Benefit from Treatment beyond Progression.
