Background: Bariatric surgery (BS) may decrease the risk of these obesity-related complications; however, due to its effect on nutrient intake and absorption, it can also have adverse consequences on maternal and foetal health. The aim of this study is to describe the evolution of electrolytes and trace elements serum levels throughout pregnancy after BS, according to the surgical technique and to evaluate the effect of nutritional deficiencies on the risk of maternal-foetal complications.

Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of the clinical evolution and maternal-foetal complications in a group of women with pregnancies that occurred after BS.

Prolactin measurement is very common in standard clinical practice. It is indicated not only in the study of pituitary adenomas, but also when there are problems with fertility, decreased libido, or menstrual disorders, among other problems. Inadequate interpretation of prolactin levels without contextualizing the laboratory results with the clinical, pharmacological, and gynecological/urological history of patients leads to erroneous diagnoses and, thus, to poorly based studies and treatments.

Cellular mechanisms underlying sexual dimorphism in the immune response remain largely unknown. Concerning the interactions among the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, we reported that during gestation, a period during which multiple sclerosis (MS) clearly ameliorates, there is a physiological expansion of regulatory T-lymphocytes (T(Reg)). Background: CD4+CD25+FoxP3+ regulatory T-cells (nT(Reg)) have been shown to suppress immune responses to autoantigens and to other diverse antigens, this suppression is mainly mediated by a cell contact-dependent mechanism not yet fully defined. It has been reported that both human natural and induced T(Reg) exert cytotoxic activity against autologous target cells, which suggests that the perforin/granzyme pathway may be a relevant candidate mechanism for the suppressive function of T(Reg). Previous reports have shown that oestradiol (E2) modulates T(Reg) percentages and function.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease with a clear sex-bias that may be attributed to sex hormones, sex' linked genes or both. Here we sought to determine the evolution pattern of cortisol and sex hormones at MS relapse and 2-months later in 7 male patients with relapsing remitting MS, and whether there was a correlation with a specific Th1 and Th2 cytokine pattern. Our findings indicate the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and the concomitant upregulation of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines during relapse.
