This article explores the application of the chi-squared test of homogeneity in the context of clinical studies, using a previous study on the efficacy of two analgesics for treating headache as an example. The sample included 215 patients, whose responses to treatment were assessed and recorded across four pain intensity categories. The test allowed for the identification of significant differences between the treatments evaluated, proving to be a valuable statistical tool for comparing groups in clinical research.

Background: Systemic sclerosis-related interstitial lung disease (SSc-ILD) represents a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc). Mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) is currently the first line treatment for SSc-ILD. There is no recommendation on the dosage of mycophenolic acid (MPA) blood concentrations, so we aimed to study the correlation between MPA exposure and respiratory outcomes in this population.

Article Synopsis
  • Current estimates of genetic variants linked to Parkinson's disease (PD) show limitations and biases across different populations, complicating patient recruitment for clinical trials focused on genetic therapies.
  • The Rostock Parkinson's disease (ROPAD) study analyzes data from 12,580 PD patients across 16 countries, revealing that 14.8% had a genetic test positive for PD-related variants, particularly in specific genes like GBA1 and LRRK2.
  • Findings indicate higher positivity rates in patients with earlier onset (age ≤ 50) or a positive family history, emphasizing the need for more extensive genetic investigation to improve patient stratification for future clinical trials.

Article Synopsis
  • Delays in hospital presentation for stroke patients were linked not only to individual factors but also to broader community-level social vulnerabilities, indicating a need for better support in these areas.
  • The study analyzed over 149,000 ischemic stroke patients and found that those in socially vulnerable neighborhoods took longer to arrive at hospitals, with an average delay of about 15.6 minutes compared to those from less vulnerable areas.
  • Mapping these delays revealed overlapping zones of delay and vulnerability, highlighting the impact of socioeconomic conditions and community resources on timely medical care.

Background: Antifibrotic agents (AFAs) are now standard-of-care for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Concerns have arisen about the safety of these drugs in patients undergoing lung transplantation (LTx).

Methods: We performed a multi-centre, nationwide, retrospective, observational study of French IPF patients undergoing LTx between 2011 and 2018 to determine whether maintaining AFAs in the peri-operative period leads to increased bronchial anastomoses issues, delay in skin healing and haemorrhagic complications.

Extracranial vertebral artery aneurysms are rare complications resulting from trauma and multiple different diseases. However, the difference between clinical and surgical profiles is well understood. To investigate the clinical and interventional outcomes following extracranial vertebral artery aneurysms (VAA) treatment through a systematic review of the literature to date, an electronic database search for full-text English articles was conducted following PRISMA guidelines.

Research Questions: Patients with severe pulmonary hypertension associated with chronic lung disease have a poor prognosis. Targeted pulmonary arterial hypertension therapies might improve exercise capacity and outcome, but there are no guidelines on treatments which are not recommended because of an unproven benefit, with discordant results from few studies in this context. The aim of our study was to evaluate targeted pulmonary arterial hypertension therapies for severe group 3 pulmonary hypertension patients.

Introduction: Intramedullary spinal cord tumors (IMSCTs) account for 2-4% of all primary CNS tumors. Given their low prevalence and the intricacy of their diagnosis and management, it is critical to address the surrounding racial and socioeconomic factors that impact the care of patients with IMSCTs. This study aimed to investigate the association between race and socioeconomic factors with overall 5 year mortality following the resection of IMSCTs.

Background And Objectives: A growing proportion of the US population is on antithrombotic therapy (AT), most significantly within the older subpopulation. Decision to use AT is a balance between the intended benefits and known bleeding risk, especially after traumatic brain injury (TBI). Preinjury inappropriate AT offers no benefit for the patient and also increases the risk of intracranial hemorrhage and worse outcome in the setting of TBI.

N-(2-thioethyl)-2-aminobenzamide (TEAB), a novel glycan auxiliary, was synthesized and its utility was evaluated. The auxiliary was conjugated to glycans by reductive amination with the water-stable reagent 2-picoline borane complex. Glycan products, which ranged from 1 to 7 linked hexoses, were all isolated in yields ranging from 60% to 90% after purification by reverse-phase chromatography.

Studies in the neurotypical population have demonstrated that personal social networks can mitigate cognitive decline and the development of Alzheimer disease. To assess whether these benefits can also be extended to people with Down syndrome (DS), we studied whether and how personal networks can be measured in this population. We adapted a personal networks instrument previously created, validated, and implemented for the neurotypical population.

Economic inequality is associated with preferences for smaller, immediate gains over larger, delayed ones. Such temporal discounting may feed into rising global inequality, yet it is unclear whether it is a function of choice preferences or norms, or rather the absence of sufficient resources for immediate needs. It is also not clear whether these reflect true differences in choice patterns between income groups.

Background And Purpose: Social networks influence human health and disease through direct biological and indirect psychosocial mechanisms. They have particular importance in neurologic disease because of support, information, and healthy behavior adoption that circulate in networks. Investigations into social networks as determinants of disease risk and health outcomes have historically relied on summary indices of social support, such as the Lubben Social Network Scale-Revised (LSNS-R) or the Stroke Social Network Scale (SSNS).
