Introduction: Inflammatory breast cancer is a special type of locally advanced mammary cancer that is associated with particularly aggressive behaviour and poor prognosis. The dog was considered the only natural model in which to study the disease because, until now, it was the only species known to present with inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IMC) spontaneously. In the present study we describe clinicopathological and immunohistochemical findings of three cats with IMC, in order to evaluate its possible value as an animal model.

Influenza A virus mutants expressing C-terminally deleted forms of the NS1 protein (NS1-81 and NS1-110) were generated by plasmid rescue. These viruses were temperature sensitive and showed a small plaque size at the permissive temperature. The accumulation of virion RNA in mutant virus-infected cells was reduced at the restrictive temperature, while the accumulation of cRNA or mRNA was not affected, indicating that the NS1 protein is involved in the control of transcription versus replication processes in the infection.

Integrins are glycoprotein heterodimers located in the cell membranes that stimulate intercellular adhesion and act as extracellular matrix (ECM) protein receptors. Although integrins have been detected in the implantation sites of various species, little is known about their participation in ruminant non-invasive placentation. The objective of this study was the detection of alphav, alpha4, alpha5, beta1 and beta3 integrin subunits and of two of their ligands, fibronectin and vitronectin, to determine their participation in the caprine peri-implantation process.

Incidence rates of oral and oropharyngeal cancers (oral cancer) in Spain are among the highest in Europe. Spain has a population heavily exposed to various types of tobacco and alcoholic beverages but the role and impact of tobacco type and beverage type in oral carcinogenesis remain controversial. To estimate the independent and joint effects of tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking habits on the risk of developing oral cancer, we carried out a multicenter, hospital-based, case-control study in Spain.

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV), the causal agent of cervical cancer, appears to be involved in the etiology of cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx. To investigate these associations, we conducted a multicenter case-control study of cancer of the oral cavity and oropharynx in nine countries.

Methods: We recruited 1670 case patients (1415 with cancer of the oral cavity and 255 with cancer of the oropharynx) and 1732 control subjects and obtained an interview, oral exfoliated cells, and blood from all participants and fresh biopsy specimens from case patients.

It has previously been shown that influenza virus NS1 protein enhances the translation of viral but not cellular mRNAs. This enhancement occurs by increasing the rate of translation initiation and requires the 5'UTR sequence, common to all viral mRNAs. In agreement with these findings, we show here that viral mRNAs, but not cellular mRNAs, are associated with NS1 during virus infection.

We describe systemic infection by in a mona monkey () on the basis of microbiologic, molecular genetic, and histologic data. The same strain of , as determined by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, was isolated in pure culture from the primate’s brain, liver, spleen, and intestine. Histologic lesions showed inflammatory infiltrates mainly composed of neutrophils, indicating an acute septicemic process.

Fifty feline sarcomas associated with vaccine-site injection were evaluated to determine the immunohistochemical expression of p53 protein, basic fibroblast growth factor (FGF-b), and transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha). Forty-one tumors (82%) were fibrosarcomas (FS), eight (16%) were malignant fibrous histiocytomas (MFH), and one (2%) was a chondrosarcoma (CS). Overexpression of p53 protein was observed in the nuclei of tumor cells in 28 (56%) sarcomas; FGF-b expression was found in the cytoplasm of tumor cells in 40 (80%) feline sarcomas, but the staining was more intense in the spindle-shaped cells of FS than in polygonal or round cells of MFH.

The influence of body mass index (BMI) on oral cancer risk was evaluated in 375 incident cases and 375 age-gender-matched hospital-based controls. Low BMIs at diagnosis and 2 years before diagnosis were associated with significantly elevated odds ratios (OR for BMI < or =22 vs >26 kg m(-2); 3.64; 95% confidence interval, CI: 2.

In this study, we examined the immunogenic properties of the Leishmania infantum acidic ribosomal protein P0 (LiP0) in the BALB/c mouse model. The humoral and cellular responses induced by the administration of the LiP0 antigen, either as soluble recombinant LiP0 (rLiP0) or as a plasmid DNA formulation (pcDNA3-LiP0), were determined. Also, the immunological response associated with a prime-boost strategy, consisting of immunization with pcDNA3-LiP0 followed by a boost with rLiP0, was assayed.

The inbred FVB/N mouse strain is widely used for creating transgenic mice. Over the past decade, persistent mammary hyperplasia has been detected in many multiparous FVB/N female mice sent to the University of California, Davis (UCD) Mutant Mouse Pathology Laboratory (MMPL) by a number of different laboratories. However, the experimental details concerning most specimens were not always available.

The FVB/N mouse strain is widely used in the generation of transgenic mouse models. We have observed that mammary glands of wild-type virgin female FVB/NCr mice frequently have the morphologic and histologic appearance of a gland during pregnancy. By 13 months of age, the mammary glands of more than 40% of the mice examined had lobuloalveolar hyperplasia that was characterized by the presence of secretory alveoli and distended ducts apparently containing secretory material.

The consumption of algae has increased considerably in recent years. However, the nutritional consequences of the algae consumption have scarcely been studied and there are some indications of serious adverse effects of algae consumption in children and adolescents. This study aims to assess the effects of balanced diets containing 7% algae (Nori or Konbu) for 3 weeks on (i) dietary intake, growth, and dietary efficiency ratio (DER), (ii) absolute absorption of several minerals, and (iii) size and histology of the liver, spleen, kidney, heart and bowel of growing rats.

Background: Growth factors seem to play a major role in corneal wound healing and TGF-beta seems to be associated with abnormal healing after corneal surgical procedures. Few studies have analysed the role of NGF and TGF-beta on corneal wound healing during pregnancy. The aim of the present study was to create an animal model to evaluate the expression of NGF and TGF-betas during corneal wound healing in two groups: control and pregnant rats.

BRCA1 is a nuclear phosphoprotein that participates in the regulation of the cell cycle. The role of the BRCA1 gene in canine mammary tissue and mammary tumours has not been studied. The present study examined immunohistochemically the expression and intracellular distribution of BRCA1 protein in two normal, seven dysplastic and 44 neoplastic canine mammary glands and its relationship with clinical and pathological variables and other prognostic parameters.

Amphotericin B (AmB) has been a most effective systemic antifungal agent, but its use is circumscribed by the dose-limiting toxicity of the conventional micellar dispersion formulation Fungizone (D-AmB). To lower AmB-associated toxicity, AmB may be integrated into oil-in-water lecithin-based microemulsions. The present study compares the pharmacokinetic characteristics of D-AmB with the alternative formulation of AmB in microemulsion (M-AmB), which has proved effective in a murine candidiasis model.

Human inflammatory breast carcinoma (IBC) is the most malignant type of breast cancer with an extremely poor prognosis. The dog is the unique animal species in which spontaneous inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IC) has been reported, although it is not well documented. The purpose of this study was to characterize histopathologically and immunohistochemically the canine IC, considering associated clinical features.

Previous results have shown a correlation between the decrease in protease activity of several influenza A virus PA protein mutants and the capacity to replicate of the corresponding mutant ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) reconstituted in vivo. In this work we studied the phenotype of mutant viruses containing these mutations. Viruses with a T162A mutation, which showed a very moderate decrease both in protease and replication activities of reconstituted RNPs, showed a wild-type phenotype.

Inflammatory mammary carcinoma (IMC) is the most aggressive spontaneous type of mammary malignant tumor both in women and dogs. Latest studies in dogs indicate that different endocrine mechanisms seem to be involved in inflammatory carcinomas (IMCs). The aim of the present study was to characterize the steroid hormone profile of inflammatory carcinoma, and to compare it with mammary dysplasias, benign tumors and other malignant tumors.

Several recombinant clones expressing antigens from Echinococcus granulosus were isolated previously from a parasite cDNA library using cystic hydatid disease (CHD) patients' sera or rabbit hyperimmune antiserum against a lipoproteic fraction from bovine cyst fluid. Six of these antigens were expressed in Escherichia coli and the purified recombinant proteins were tested in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for specific IgG with a panel of sera from patients with surgically confirmed (n = 58) or immunologically diagnosed (n = 71) CHD. Sera from clinically normal individuals (n = 203) and sera from individuals with other helminthic infections (n = 65) were assayed for the assessment of specificity.
