Collagen Hydrolysates as Nutritional Support in Canine Osteoarthritis: A Narrative Review.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common disease in dogs with severe impact on their welfare. The multimodal management of OA includes feeding therapeutic diets and nutraceuticals to slow down OA progression. Collagen hydrolysates (CH) are a nutritional supplement that may exert anabolic effects on osteoarthritic joint cartilage as well as disease-modifying effects.

Nutritional consulting in regular veterinary practices in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Background: Increased interest in nutrition by dog and cat owners stresses the importance of providing tailored nutritional guidance for each patient by veterinarians. The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) has provided guidelines to help veterinarians implement this in every-day patient care, by screening patients for the presence of nutritional risk factors, establishing tailored nutritional plans and providing adequate patient follow-up tools.

Influence of macronutrient composition of commercial diets on circulating leptin and adiponectin concentrations in overweight dogs.

Leptin and adiponectin play important roles in obesity-related inflammation and comorbidities. Previous research suggests that alterations in dietary macronutrient composition can modify circulating leptin and adiponectin concentrations in people, but limited research on this subject has been performed in dogs. This study investigated the effects of commercial high protein (HP), high fat (HF) and high carbohydrate medium protein (HCMP) diets on baseline (T ) concentrations, post-prandial peak concentrations and total release in a ten-hour time span of leptin and adiponectin in dogs, when compared to a maintenance high carbohydrate low protein (HCLP) diet.
