  • The study tested whether adding allogeneic adipose tissue-derived stem cells (AASCs) to deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) would improve bone formation after sinus floor augmentation (SFA) compared to using DBBM alone.
  • Eighteen minipigs were divided into three groups and euthanized at one, two, and four months post-augmentation to measure newly formed bone (NFB) and bone-to-implant contact (BIC) through histomorphometric analysis.
  • Results showed no significant differences in NFB or BIC between the AASC-treated group and the control at any time point, suggesting that AASCs did not enhance bone healing compared to DBBM alone.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares the prognostic value of different body measurement indices, like BMI and waist-to-height ratio, in predicting mortality in patients with non-ischaemic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
  • It finds that higher BMI is linked to increased risks of all-cause and cardiovascular death, particularly in patients with a BMI of 35 or more.
  • The research suggests that greater waist-to-height ratios also indicate higher mortality risk, highlighting the importance of fat location and distribution beyond just body weight.

Purpose: Optimal oxygenation targets for patients with acute hypoxemic respiratory failure in the intensive care unit (ICU) are not clearly defined due to substantial variability in design of previous trials. This study aimed to perform a pre-specified individual patient data meta-analysis of the Handling Oxygenation Targets in the ICU (HOT-ICU) and the Handling Oxygenation Targets in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) (HOT-COVID) trials to compare targeting a partial pressure of arterial oxygen (PaO) of 8-12 kPa in adult ICU patients, assessing both benefits and harms.

Methods: We assessed 90-day all-cause mortality and days alive without life support in 90 days using a generalised mixed model.

Article Synopsis
  • The Heart Failure Collaboratory (HFC) score evaluates pharmacotherapy for heart failure patients, and this study analyzed its impact in 1116 Danish patients with nonischemic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
  • A lower modified HFC (mHFC) score was linked to increased all-cause mortality, while an mHFC score of 3-4 had better outcomes compared to scores of 1-2.
  • Despite these findings, implanting cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) did not improve overall or cardiovascular survival rates in these patients, although it did reduce sudden cardiovascular deaths.

Article Synopsis
  • Current guidelines recommend implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) therapy for patients with heart failure and left ventricular ejection fraction ≤35%, but the benefits of ICDs in patients with NYHA class III remain uncertain.
  • The DANISH trial studied 1116 patients and found that those in NYHA class III/IV had higher long-term all-cause and cardiovascular mortality rates compared to those in NYHA class II.
  • Despite these findings, ICD implantation did not significantly reduce all-cause or cardiovascular mortality rates in either NYHA class, indicating a limited benefit of ICD therapy for this patient population.

Step-down oral antibiotic therapy is associated with a non-inferior long-term outcome compared with continued intravenous antibiotic therapy in the treatment of left-sided infective endocarditis. We aimed to analyze whether step-down oral therapy compared with continued intravenous antibiotic therapy is also associated with a non-inferior outcome in patients with large vegetations (vegetation length ≥ 10 mm) or among patients who underwent surgery before step-down oral therapy. We included patients without presence of aortic root abscess at diagnosis from the POET (Partial Oral Antibiotic Endocarditis Treatment) study.
